20 Years After Remembering Legendary Abefe Gbenga Adeboye

On this day, we remember the legendary Gbenga Adeboye, who passed away 20 years ago. Adeboye was a multi-talented Nigerian singer, comedian, radio presenter, and master of ceremony. He was popularly known as ‘Funwontan’ and was a household name in the Yoruba entertainment industry.

Born on September 30, 1959, in Odeomu, Osun State, southwestern Nigeria, Adeboye’s early life was marked by his passion for entertainment. He began his career as a chief host of a popular radio program presented in Lagos State Broadcasting Corporation in the early 1980s, where he gained the nickname ‘Funwontan Oduology.’

Adeboye was not only a talented comedian but also a generous one. Veteran Nigerian actress Idowu Philips, whose first car was a gift from the comedian, described him as such. His fans also regarded him as a merchant and performer of traditional Oduology.

Sadly, Adeboye passed away on April 30, 2003, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire many in the Nigerian entertainment industry. Today, we honor his memory and celebrate his contributions to the world of entertainmen‏t. Rest on, legend.
