Sanwo-Olu mandates the removal of Jankara and Bombata markets situated in Lagos Island

Date:

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has issued an order for the demolition of Jankara and Bombata markets on Lagos Island, marking the beginning of a comprehensive regeneration project for the entire Lagos Island.

Additionally, Governor Sanwo-Olu has indicated that Pelewura Market, also located on Lagos Island, will undergo demolition after engaging in consultations with relevant stakeholders.

The governor revealed these plans during a Sunday inspection of the area, during which he also announced the scheduled completion of the Ilubirin Pumping Station by January.

This critical infrastructure project aims to combat the persistent issue of flooding in the area.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the need for strict enforcement of regulations, stating that illegal occupants of drainages would be removed, and the indiscriminate dumping of refuse would not be tolerated.

He also addressed the transformation of the market areas, specifying that Bombata and Jankara markets would be completely revamped with detailed design plans in place.

Regarding Pelewura Market, where many citizens are situated, the governor assured that adequate notice would be given, and collaboration with concessionaires and stakeholders would determine the timing of the demolition and evacuation.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also highlighted plans to address road infrastructure, involving the original contractor, Julius Berger, in rejuvenating Idimagbo Avenue, Odo-Giwa, and Adeniji-Adele Road.

He stressed the importance of changing the behavior of citizens, urging them to refrain from dumping refuse in drainage systems and promising a long-term transformation of the entire area from Idimagbo to Ebutero.

Furthermore, the governor provided updates on the Ilubirin Pumping Station project, stating that significant progress had been made in the construction, with an expected completion date of December or January.

This project aims to enhance drainage systems and mitigate flooding on Lagos Island by creating new drainage channels to efficiently direct water into the lagoon.
