The court imposes a fine of N100 million on the Federal Government for infringing on Emefiele’s rights

Date:

The High Court in Abuja, within the Federal Capital Territory, has ruled that the extended detention of the former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, without trial violated his fundamental rights.

As a consequence, the court imposed a N100 million fine on both the Federal Government and the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Additionally, the court issued an order prohibiting the FG and its representatives from re-arresting or detaining Emefiele without a court order.

This judgment stemmed from a fundamental human rights lawsuit filed by the ex-CBN governor after his prolonged detention by the Department of State Services.

Emefiele sought N1 billion in damages and requested the court to restrain the defendants from further arresting or detaining him.

The former CBN boss was arrested on June 10 following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu,

The defendants in this suit included the Federal Government, the Attorney General of the Federation, the EFCC, and its chairman.
