African 2023: Osimhen bears the burden of an injury-plagued Nigeria

Date:

Victor Osimhen, Nigeria’s standout footballer, faced increased expectations in the Cup of Nations after fellow goal-scorer Victor Boniface withdrew due to injury.

The Super Eagles kick off their AFCON campaign against Equatorial Guinea, followed by matches against Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau in Group A.

As Nigeria seeks its fourth Cup of Nations title, Osimhen, at 25, holds the key to their attacking prowess.

Despite winning the African Player of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to Napoli’s Serie A title, he faces the challenge of living up to his past form, having scored 26 goals last season but only eight this campaign.

Osimhen, determined to make a mark in the tournament, expressed his desire to win the AFCON and create his own legacy, aiming to join the ranks of Nigerian football greats.

The absence of Boniface, who could have been his partner, adds pressure, with Terem Moffi stepping in.

Nigeria’s attacking depth, featuring players like Chukwueze, Simon, Lookman, and Iheanacho, provides Coach Peseiro with options.

However, the team faces challenges, losing key players like Ndidi and Awoniyi and dealing with late substitutions like Onuachu due to injuries.

Peseiro acknowledges the team’s attacking style but remains cautious, recognizing the competitiveness of the group stage opponents.

As the Super Eagles strive for AFCON success, the spotlight is on Osimhen to deliver the goals and lead Nigeria to victory.
