Rwanda has made history by becoming the first African nation to launch a self-flying electric air taxi, a breakthrough that cements the country’s reputation as a leading hub for technological innovation on the continent.

The innovation was unveiled on Thursday in partnership with China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) during a live demonstration at the Africa Aviation Summit in Kigali. The Ministry of Infrastructure hailed the milestone as proof of Rwanda’s commitment to testing and deploying cutting-edge aviation technologies, with potential applications in both transportation and tourism.

Aircraft Specifications

The two-seater electric air taxi is equipped with 16 electric motors and propellers, offering an efficient and sustainable mode of urban air mobility. Key features include:

  • Cruising speed: 100 km/h
  • Top speed: 130 km/h
  • Flight range: 35 km
  • Flight duration: approximately 21 minutes
  • Payload capacity: 220 kg
  • Recharge time: about 2 hours

The pilotless aircraft is designed to provide safe, eco-friendly transport while reducing the carbon footprint of aviation.

Rwanda at the Forefront of Renewable Innovation

The launch comes as nations worldwide race toward renewable energy adoption and green transportation. Under the leadership of President Paul Kagame, Rwanda has positioned itself as a pioneer in both sustainable development and tourism-driven innovation.

Officials believe the electric air taxi will not only enhance Rwanda’s aviation profile but also strengthen its position as a continental leader in innovation and eco-tourism.
