NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall Across Nigeria This Weekend

Date:

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather advisory warning of expected thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in several parts of the country between Friday, September 12, and Sunday, September 14, 2025.

According to the agency, strong winds, accompanied by heavy downpours, are likely to affect both northern and southern regions, with varying degrees of intensity. The forecast highlights risks of flooding in low-lying areas, disruption of road transport, and potential delays in flight operations due to poor visibility.

NiMet explained that the weather pattern is linked to increased moisture influx from the Atlantic Ocean and rising instability in the atmosphere, which could trigger widespread thunderstorms. States in the north-central and south-west are expected to experience early morning rainfall, while parts of the north-east, south-east, and coastal belt may witness heavy downpours in the afternoon and evening hours.

The agency advised residents in flood-prone communities to remain vigilant and take necessary safety precautions. Motorists were also urged to avoid driving through flooded roads, while farmers were encouraged to take note of the weather conditions in planning their field activities.

NiMet further assured that it would continue to monitor the situation closely and provide regular updates to guide the public, emergency agencies, and relevant stakeholders.
