Google Launches AI Skilling Blueprint to Bridge Africa’s Digital Skills Gap

Date:

Lagos, Nigeria – Google has unveiled a landmark initiative aimed at addressing Africa’s widening artificial intelligence (AI) skills gap and preparing the continent’s workforce for an increasingly digital future.

On Wednesday, the tech giant introduced the AI Skilling Blueprint for Africa, a comprehensive policy roadmap designed to guide governments in developing national AI training strategies. The blueprint provides a structured framework for building AI-ready talent pools and ensuring that local workforces can participate in the rapidly growing AI-driven economy.

The initiative forms the centerpiece of a broader set of AI-focused commitments by Google, which include investments in data infrastructure and support for local skilling organizations. These measures aim to create an interconnected ecosystem capable of sustaining AI innovation and adoption across Africa.

Doron Avni, Google’s Vice President of Government Affairs & Public Policy, emphasized the importance of the program:

“Africa’s AI moment is now, and Google is committed to being a partner for the long haul. The AI Skilling Blueprint provides a clear roadmap for governments to build the workforce of the future.”

Avni added that by partnering with local experts and organizations, Google is fostering the development of an AI-ready ecosystem to support sustainable growth, digital transformation, and economic opportunities across the continent.

With Africa’s tech industry rapidly expanding, Google’s initiative seeks to ensure that local talent is equipped with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to leverage AI technologies, positioning the continent for long-term innovation and competitiveness on the global stage.
