A Nigerian woman has been named the Lord Mayor of Leeds, marking a significant achievement

Abigail Marshall Katung, a Nigerian woman and member of the Labour and Co-operative Party, has achieved a significant milestone by being elected as the Lord Mayor of Leeds in the United Kingdom. Having grown up in Nigeria, she later moved to the UK for her studies at Leeds University.

Expressing her gratitude on social media, she stated, “It’s with great pride that my family and I eagerly anticipate the responsibility of serving.”

Marshall, who is also a governor at Leeds City College, acknowledged the honor of being chosen for the 2024/25 term, emphasizing the city’s virtues of compassion, resilience, and unity.

BBC reported that Leeds City College congratulated her, expressing eagerness to collaborate in providing skills and opportunities for the community.

Originating from Kaduna State, Marshall’s parents, she adds a personal touch to her achievement, making her journey to the ceremonial post of Lord Mayor of Leeds even more remarkable.
