Akeredolu: Chronology of sickness, false death rumors, and political events

Date:

The media aides linked to Aiyedatiwa have been relieved of their positions amidst an alleged rift between the two leaders. Additionally, the governor has dissolved the press crew assigned to the deputy governor’s office.

The affected aides, including Press Secretary Kenneth Odusola, Special Assistant (New Media) Okunniga Oladipupo, and Special Assistant (Photography) Abayomi Samson Adefolalu, were reportedly dismissed due to insubordination and a blatant disregard for authority, according to government sources.

On September 15, 2023, Akeredolu’s absence triggered a political crisis, leading to Aiyedatiwa being declared the acting governor. He dissolved the state executive council, citing a lack of communication from Akeredolu for over a month. Aiyedatiwa accused Akeredolu’s loyalists of undermining his administration and plotting impeachment.

By October 8, 2023, the state House of Assembly moved to impeach Aiyedatiwa, alleging gross misconduct, abuse of office, and disloyalty to Akeredolu. They claimed to have received a letter from Akeredolu, dated September 30, 2023, denying the handover of power to Aiyedatiwa. They also cited a video message from Akeredolu, asserting his recovery and imminent return.

Akeredolu returned to Nigeria on November 2, 2023, remaining in his Ibadan residence after 84 days in Germany, where he underwent a successful surgery. He expressed gratitude for the support received.

On November 25, 2023, President Bola Tinubu intervened in the Akeredolu-Aiyedatiwa rift, urging peace and the maintenance of the status quo during a meeting with Aiyedatiwa and other Ondo State stakeholders in Abuja.

Tragically, on December 27, 2023, Akeredolu passed away in Germany due to prostate cancer, as confirmed by the state government in a press statement. His death was described as peaceful, leaving behind a legacy of service and development.
