The Lagos Polo Club has barred billionaire real estate mogul Sir Olu Okeowo from its premises indefinitely following an alleged assault incident involving a club staff member by one of his security aides.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Club’s Secretary, Mr. Adeyemi Oreagba, confirmed that Okeowo — Chairman of Gibraltar Group — is “barred from entry into the club premises, either as a guest or otherwise, until further notice.”
The alleged incident occurred on Saturday, October 18, 2025, during the Reminisce Event held at the Club’s Ikoyi grounds. According to the Club, one of Okeowo’s security personnel “violently assaulted a staff member while he was performing his duty.”
“This action of the security personnel attached to Sir Olu Okeowo negates one of the Club’s main ground rules on decorum and member conduct,” Oreagba stated.
“Accordingly, Sir Olu Okeowo is hereby banned from entering the Club premises, either as a guest or otherwise, until further notice.”
The Club’s Main Committee reportedly conducted a thorough review of the incident, consulting witness accounts and involved parties before reaching the decision. The committee emphasized that members are responsible for the conduct of their guests, domestic staff, and security personnel while on Club grounds.
“The Club places great importance on the welfare and dignity of all staff,” the statement added. “We have zero tolerance for any form of assault by members or guests.”
The ban is a rare disciplinary measure in one of Lagos’ most exclusive social institutions. Okeowo, known for his philanthropy, opulent lifestyle, and frequent presence at high-society events, has drawn significant attention due to the Club’s unprecedented action.
The decision has sparked heated discussions within elite circles, highlighting tensions between exclusivity, social stature, and accountability in private clubs.
As of press time, Sir Olu Okeowo and Gibraltar Group have not issued a public response to the sanction.
