Babajide Sanwo-Olu Approves Recruitment of 150 Additional Firefighters to Strengthen Lagos Emergency Response

Date:

The Lagos State Government has approved the recruitment of an additional 150 able-bodied men and women into the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, reinforcing its commitment to public safety and rapid emergency response across the state.

The approval by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was disclosed by the agency’s Controller-General, Margaret Adeseye, during the flag-off of the LSFRS Squad 23 training exercise in Ikeja.

Adeseye stated that the latest recruitment reflects the administration’s sustained focus on building a resilient, well-trained, and properly equipped fire and rescue service capable of meeting the growing safety demands of a rapidly expanding мегacity. She noted that the decision aligns with a consistent pattern of strategic investments in emergency services under the current government.

She recalled that in 2020, on the eve of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sanwo-Olu administration recruited 100 firefighters to strengthen frontline response capacity. This was followed in 2022 by the largest single recruitment in the history of the service, when 435 firefighters were enlisted. Their Passing Out Parade formed a central part of the Fire Service’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in October 2022.

That milestone year also saw major infrastructure upgrades, including the commissioning of 62 fire apparatuses, the opening of new fire stations in Ajegunle, Ebute Elefun, and Oba Oniru–Lekki, and the unveiling of a purpose-built ultra-modern headquarters at Alausa, Ikeja.

According to Adeseye, the newly recruited 150 firefighters, who were employed in November 2025, have since commenced intensive training at the upgraded LSFRS Fire Academy. They are undergoing the Professional Basic Firefighting Competency and Short Service Course, a programme designed to produce disciplined, highly skilled, and operationally efficient emergency responders in line with global best practices.

She concluded by reaffirming the Lagos State Government’s resolve to continue investing in human capacity development, modern infrastructure, and operational equipment, with the overarching goal of safeguarding lives, property, and the environment across Lagos State.
