Blessing CEO Faces Backlash After Cancer Claim Controversy

Date:

Nigerian social media personality Blessing CEO has come under intense public criticism after admitting that she has not been diagnosed with cancer, weeks after informing followers that she was battling stage four breast cancer.

The controversy emerged after the self-described relationship therapist appeared in an interview with Egungun, where she clarified that her earlier statement about having cancer resulted from what she described as a miscommunication from her doctors.

According to her explanation, she had only undergone a biopsy and was still awaiting the final medical results. This clarification contrasts sharply with her earlier public statements, in which she appeared visibly emotional in videos shared online, telling followers that her “days were numbered” and asking for prayers and support.

Those earlier posts generated widespread sympathy across Nigerian social media. Supporters sent messages of encouragement, while others contributed financially to assist with what they believed would be the cost of chemotherapy and medical care.

Blessing CEO later revealed that she had received approximately ₦13 million in donations from well-wishers who believed she had already been diagnosed with cancer and was preparing for treatment.

Her latest remarks have therefore triggered strong reactions from many supporters who now feel misled by the initial claims. Critics argue that the public narrative presented at the time suggested a confirmed diagnosis rather than an ongoing medical investigation.

Despite the backlash, Blessing CEO has stated that she does not intend to apologise. She maintains that she only shared the information she believed to be accurate at the time and insists that there was no deliberate attempt to deceive the public.

The episode has reignited wider debate about accountability and transparency among social media personalities, particularly when personal health stories lead to financial support from the public. Observers note that the situation highlights the growing influence of digital personalities and the ethical expectations that accompany large online followings.
