The data showed that out of 207 films released in 2024, 75 were Nigerian productions, showing the industry’s robust output. Impressively, 15 Nollywood films grossed over N100 million, highlighting the growing commercial appeal and profitability of Nigerian cinema.

Ibadan Stampede: Court Grants Bail to Queen Naomi, Oriyomi Hamzat, School Principal

0

The Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has approved bail for Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Agidigbo FM owner Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, and Abdullahi Fasasi, Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun.

The decision was made by Justice Kamorudeen Olawoyin on Monday. Oriyomi Hamzat’s bail was set at N10 million with the condition of providing two sureties. Additionally, the court ordered that his radio station must not broadcast any news related to the case.

The defendants had presented their bail applications on the previous Tuesday, but were remanded in custody until Monday’s ruling on their bail.

Their defense argued that the accused were not flight risks and were willing to cooperate with ongoing investigations. However, the Oyo State Attorney General, Abiodun Aikomo, opposed the bail, stressing the gravity of the charges and the need for justice for the victims and their families.

Adekunle Shobaloju (SAN), representing Oriyomi Hamzat, confirmed that they had applied for bail pending arraignment, with the arguments presented and the ruling reserved until January 13th.

The arrests stem from a tragic children’s party in December 2024 at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, where a stampede led to the deaths of at least 35 children. Governor Seyi Makinde has called for those responsible to be prosecuted, though he has not opposed the granting of bail in this case.

At the forefront of entrepreneurship and industry stands one of Nigeria’s most enduring and celebrated industrialists, Aare Rasaq Okoya, the founder of the Eleganza Group.

For over six decades, his name has been synonymous with excellence, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to enterprise, philanthropy and nation-building.

From humble beginnings, Okoya who was born on January 12, 1940, to Tiamiyu Idiatu Okoya, in Lagos Island’s Epetedo area, charted his destiny with determination and vision, displaying an innate business acumen.

Recounting his life’s journey, Okoya had stated that he started his own business at the age of 14 with £70 his mother loaned him, which he invested in acquiring tailoring materials like ribbons, zippers and buttons under the trade name— Okoya Buttons Stores. Making a success out of the business, he had built his first house in Surulere, Lagos, at 19, and by 21, he owned four more houses.

The Eleganza Group, which he established in 1978, remains one of Nigeria’s leading conglomerates, producing quality goods for both local and international markets. Indeed, the Eleganza Industrial City, a sprawling factory complex in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, remains a testament to his entrepreneurial vision.

Speaking about his philosophy, Okoya said, “Honesty, focus, determination, self-belief and passion for what you do are the keys to success. When I started, I guarded my resources jealously and reinvested in my business. That is why Eleganza continues to thrive.

“I derive happiness on the production lines. It keeps me busy and fulfilled.”

Beyond business, Okoya is a philanthropist and committed family man. He has sponsored countless scholarships, built facilities for educational institutions like the University of Ado-Ekiti, and employed thousands. He is also a devout Muslim, funding pilgrimages to Mecca for many.

As a man who embodies tradition and progress, Okoya’s influence extends beyond business and philanthropy. He has been honoured with titles such as the Aare of Lagos and Otun-Aare Adinni of Lagos Central Mosque.

Despite his immense wealth, he remains a core family man; often seen engaging with his wives, children and grandchildren.

Looking back on his illustrious career, Okoya reflects as he celebrates his 85th birthday, “My prayer is to enjoy good health, long life, and leave the legacy of my industry behind. I want Eleganza to outlive me and continue with my philosophy of philanthropy.”

Speaking about retirement, he added, “In a few years, I may slow down. Luckily, I have a younger wife, Shade, who shares my vision and commitment. She’s in the factory every day, ensuring the legacy continues.”

“There’s probably more to this” – Uproar as Oyo State Government files 18-count criminal charges against Prophetess Naomi, Oriyomi Hazmat, others

Oyo State Government has filed an 18-count criminal charges against the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Naomi Silekunola, Alhaji Oriyomi Hazmat, and the Principal of Islamic High School, Abdulahi Fasasi.

In December that Naomi had gotten herself into trouble with her recent charity work. The mother of the crown prince, in collaboration with Agidigbo 88.7 FM, Ibadan, owned by Oriyomi Hazmat, had organized an event to feed the less privileged. Unfortunately, the event led to the death of over 32 children which was caused by a stampede.

The former Queen was arrested alongside Hazmat, and were remanded by a Chief Magistrate at the Agodi Correctional Facility. They were arraigned on a four-count charge of conspiracy, acceleration of death, negligent acts causing harm, and failure to provide adequate security and medical facilities.

In an update to the case, the three of them were accused of offenses including conspiracy to commit murder, manslaughter, criminal negligence, and other related charges. The charge sheet said they failed to provide adequate security, crowd control mechanisms, and medical facilities during the ill-fated funfair event held at the Islamic High School. The offence is punishable under Sections 308 and 344 of the Criminal Code, CAP 38, Vol 11, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

When the news broke out, Ooni had shown support for her as he expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. He spoke highly of her character and how she was fond of organising similar events when she was royalty.

Actor, Adeniyi Johnson noted how the people of Ondo State are known for their kind-heartedness and generosity. He prayed that God see her through and bring her back stronger.

Actress, Biola Bayo used Naomi’s case as a prayer point, praying that her good heart wouldn’t put her in trouble. Biola expressed how heartbroken she was as she noted how Naomi wanted to put a smile on people’s faces and ended up in a predicament.

Comedian, Woli Agba stated that he strongly believes this is not happening outside the knowledge of God. He prayed that she would be vindicated and the glory of God would shine brighter on her, and the desire of her enemies shall perish with them.

Police intercept man with 59 children in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command said it has intercepted a male suspect in connection with the alleged trafficking of 59 male children in Abuja.

The Commissioner in charge of the FCT Police Command, Olatunji Disu, said this during a media briefing on Wednesday in Abuja.

Disu said the suspect was intercepted on Monday by the Patrol and Guard Unit of the command led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Sarki Umar at about 3:30pm.

The Commissioner said the suspect was intercepted in a white Peugeot J5 Bus with registration number KMC 283 ZJ along the Abuja-Kano route.

He said: “The bus was found to be transporting 59 male children, aged between four and 12 years.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that the children, who came from different families, were being transported by the suspect who resides in Nasarawa State.

“The suspect allegedly travels to Kano State to convey the children en-route Nasarawa State under the pretext of training them.”

Disu said the incident had been classified as a case of suspected child abuse and trafficking, given the circumstances surrounding it.

He said the suspect was operating without proper documentation or parental consent for the movement of the minors.

According to him, the suspect, the vehicle and the 59 children are currently in police custody while a thorough investigation is ongoing.

Disu said the command was working closely with the FCT Social Development Secretariat to ensure that the children were safely reunited with their families and all involved, brought to justice.

The Commissioner pledged the commitment of the command to ensure that the vulnerable groups, especially children were protected.

He said the idea was to protect the group from exploitation and abuse in line with the Child’s Right Act, 2023.

Disu enjoined parents and guardians to remain vigilant and ensure the safety of their children.

Real estate overtakes oil & gas as Nigeria’s third largest sector

Early numbers from the ongoing Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Consumer Price Index (CPI) rebasing shows that real estate has displaced oil and gas as Nigeria’s third largest sector.

Real estate is behind crop production and trade which are now Nigeria’s biggest and second biggest sectors respectively.

Agriculture had been Nigeria’s biggest sector before now, contributing over 20 percent to the nation’s GDP. It had subsectors such as crop production, livestock, forestry, and fishing.

This time, crop production has been taken out of agriculture and has emerged the nation’s second largest industry. Agriculture contributed 28.65 percent to overall GDP in the third quarter (Q3) of 2024.

Telecommunications, which was subsumed into information and communication, is a standalone sector and now the fourth largest sector. In the Q3 of 2024, information and communication contributed 16.35 percent to the GDP.

Trade, now Nigeria’s second largest, contributed 14.78 percent to the GDP in Q3 of 2024.

In the new rebased GDP, crude petroleum and natural gas, construction, food beverages and tobacco are fifth, sixth and seventh largest sectors in Nigeria. Public administration has been totally displaced from the top seven.

Real estate, a growing sector

In nominal terms, real estate services grew by 46.52 percent in the Q3 of 2024, higher by 43.70 percent points than the growth rate reported for the same period in 2023 and lower when compared to the preceding quarter.

On a quarter-on-quarter, the sector growth rate was 16.15 percent. It contributed 5.43 percent to real GDP in Q3 of 2024, lower than the 5.58 percent recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2023.

Despite the declining purchasing power, there is a growing demand for Nigeria’s real estate.

Though there are conflicting figures regarding Nigeria’s housing deficit, several real estate experts estimate the gap at 28 million units, stating that the nation needs 700,000 new homes annually.

The real estate market is anticipated to achieve a value of $2.61 trillion by 2025, Statista says, showing that the sector has huge potential.

“Among the various segments within the market, residential real estate holds the largest share, with a projected market volume of $2.25tn by 2025,” Statista says.

“Over the period of 2025-2029, the market is expected to exhibit a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.91 percent, resulting in a market volume of $3.41tn by 2029. When compared globally, the United States is projected to generate the highest value in the Real Estate market sector, amounting to $136.6tn in 2025.

“The real estate market in Nigeria is experiencing a surge in demand for luxury apartments in major cities.”

Why rebasing is critical

The NBS, last year, commenced rebasing the country’s GDP and CPI.

This initiative aims to reflect updated economic conditions and is recommended every five years by the United Nations Statistical Commission.

The last rebasing occurred in 2014, leading to a significant GDP increase of 89 percent and positioning Nigeria as Africa’s largest economy.

Moses Waniko, technical assistant to the statistician general, who presented the provisions of the rebasing exercise in a sensitisation workshop organised by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) in collaboration with the NBS on Thursday, said that the base year for new provision was 2019 as against the former’s 2010.

According to him, the rebasing covers new areas of the economy including digital economy, activities of modular refineries, pension fund administration, national health insurance scheme, mining, among others.

Noting the implications of the rebasing exercise, Uwaniko said it would allow for economic and development planning, growth and increase in the size of the economy.

“This current exercise will enhance data accuracy and inform better policy-making in the light of recent economic shifts, particularly in technology and digital sectors.

“It is good to look at the rebasing from different angles, not just the aggregate numbers. It is good to look at what those numbers are supposed to tell us in terms of the distribution, the aggregate numbers, in terms of their weights, contributions and the rest. Beyond that, there are other implications for the national economy. The first is rebasing will provide or allow for an economic and development plan,” he said.

“The second is that the rebasing will really help to provide a good trajectory for the economy. Beyond this, it’s important to also state that after the rebasing, there are certain things that we expect might change such as changes in the size of the structure of the economy. We expect that the size of the economy will be bigger.

“The tax-to-GDP ratio is something that people may want to see. Debt to GDP ratio of 18.5 percent as of September 2019 could also reduce with the bigger size of the GDP, and then per-capita income will increase after the rebasing,” he further said.

In his keynote address, Adeyemi Adeniran, statistician general of the federation, explained that rebasing both the GDP and CPI is a vital exercise that ensures the economic indicators are current and accurate reflections of the economic realities.

He said as economies evolve, new industries emerge, and consumption patterns shift, justifying why the statistical measures must be updated to capture these changes.

“Rebasing our GDP and CPI allows us to align with these transformations, providing a more precise and relevant picture of Nigeria’s economic landscape. This process is foundational to informed policymaking, strategic planning, and effective governance. Hence, it is one exercise that the NBS is conducting with significant importance and professionalism.

“As we proceed with the finalisation of the rebasing of our GDP and CPI, I want to highlight this key point. The rebasing exercise is designed to ensure that our economic indicators accurately reflect the current structure of our economy, incorporating new and emerging sectors, updating our consumption baskets, and refining our data collection methods. This is our responsibility as the official producer of data in Nigeria,” he said.

In his remarks, Tayo Aduloju, CEO of NESG, said, “Economic (GDP) rebasing, in essence, is a recalibration – an exercise with profound significance and akin to cleaning the lenses through which we view our economy – allowing us to see a clearer, more accurate picture of its structure, size, and potential.

“As economies evolve, new industries emerge, technology transforms markets, and the contributions of different sectors shift. Without updated economic measurements, we risk underestimating our true economic capacity.

“When we embarked on a similar rebasing in 2014, our GDP leapt by nearly 90 percent, elevating Nigeria’s economy to $510 billion and positioning it ahead of South Africa as the largest economy in Africa. This was not a fabrication; it was a reflection of reality.”

Results of Rebasing

Commenting on the results of the rebasing exercise, Muda Yusuf, chief executive officer, Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), noted that the outcomes of rebasing exercise would serve as a critical planning tool for businesses, especially private sector players.

He stressed the need to review the weighting component in formulation of the GDP growth. According to him, some sectors critical to the overall economic growth are underperforming, while others with less impact are recording growth but not impacting the economy.

This, for him, does not reflect the true status of the economy, and must be addressed.

“We have some sectors that are not really recording growth while other critical sectors are not doing well. This distorts the picture of what the economy truly looks like.”

Analysts at CardinalStone Research said the rebasing is likely to shrink the size of the informal economy.

“The re-weighting of the CPI basket may result in a reduction in the impact of food and non-alcoholic beverage price changes on the overall headline inflation reading.”
