The Lagos State Council of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) issued a statement on Saturday, clarifying that the person reportedly arrested for administering an injection to the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, is not a registered nurse.
The association stressed the importance of verifying qualifications before labeling individuals as healthcare professionals and urged the media to exercise accuracy in reporting.
Mohbad, 27, passed away on September 12, 2023, and his father, Joseph Aloba, mentioned that an auxiliary nurse had administered the injection.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the completion of an autopsy on Mohbad’s body and deposited his remains in the mortuary.
NANNM extended its condolences to the family of Mohbad and supported the ongoing investigation into the circumstances of his death, emphasizing the need for professionalism in reporting and conducting the inquiry.
The association highlighted the regulatory challenges in Nigeria’s healthcare system and the importance of individuals meeting specific criteria to be recognized as qualified nurses.
NANNM clarified that the term “Auxiliary Nurse” has no place in Nigeria’s healthcare system and called for accuracy in reporting by both investigating authorities and the media.
The association demanded corrective actions from media outlets that inaccurately reported the arrest of a nurse.
