Morocco’s Al Boraq: Africa’s First High-Speed Train Transforms National Travel

Date:

Morocco continues to lead Africa’s railway revolution with the successful operation of the Al Boraq, the continent’s first and fastest high-speed train. Since its launch in 2018, the service has become a symbol of modern infrastructure, connecting key cities such as Casablanca, Tangier, and Rabat at speeds of up to 320 km/h.

The high-speed rail line has drastically shortened journey times across the country. The route between Casablanca and Tangier, which previously took more than five hours by conventional train, can now be completed in just two hours. Similarly, connections to Rabat and other cities have strengthened regional integration and boosted national mobility.

A Landmark for African Infrastructure

The Al Boraq project, named after the legendary winged steed in Islamic tradition, was inaugurated in November 2018 by King Mohammed VI alongside French President Emmanuel Macron. Built in partnership with French companies and Morocco’s state-owned rail operator, the ONCF, the service represents not only a technological milestone but also a statement of Morocco’s ambition to modernize its transport system and economy.

Comfort, Efficiency, and Growth

Equipped with modern coaches, spacious seating, and advanced safety features, the Al Boraq offers passengers a comfortable and efficient travel experience comparable to Europe’s top high-speed rail networks. Officials say the service has already attracted millions of riders, reducing dependence on road transport and lowering carbon emissions through cleaner energy use.

Expansion Plans to Marrakech

Looking ahead, Morocco is preparing for the construction of a second high-speed line linking Casablanca to Marrakech, further extending the network and reinforcing the country’s role as a continental pioneer in rail innovation. The expansion is expected to cut travel times between Casablanca and Marrakech to just over two hours, boosting tourism and commerce in one of Morocco’s most visited cities.

Economic and Regional Impact

The Al Boraq is widely seen as a driver of economic growth, supporting business travel, domestic tourism, and trade. Analysts note that its success could encourage similar projects across Africa, where rail transport is increasingly seen as vital for reducing logistics costs and stimulating regional integration.
