Nigeria’s Cinema Industry Records Strongest First Quarter in Six Years

Date:

Nigeria’s cinema industry has recorded its strongest first quarter in six years, with total admissions reaching 752,136 in the first quarter of 2026. The figures point to renewed audience confidence in the theatrical experience and a steady resurgence of cinema attendance across the country.

Data released by the Nigerian box office on Sunday, April 5, 2026, indicates that the performance also reflects the growing influence of Nollywood productions within the domestic film market. Local titles continue to attract significant audiences and are increasingly shaping the direction of cinema programming and ticket sales.

The Q1 result represents a noticeable improvement over the same period in 2025, when total admissions stood at 661,720. The increase highlights a strengthening market environment after several years of softer attendance numbers that followed economic pressures and changing audience habits.

Industry observers note that the renewed growth suggests Nigerian audiences are gradually returning to cinemas in larger numbers, particularly when strong local stories and familiar Nollywood faces lead the box office lineup. The rising presence of domestic productions has also helped reinforce the connection between audiences and the big-screen experience.

The latest admissions figures therefore signal more than a statistical improvement. They reflect a broader shift in the Nigerian film exhibition landscape, where locally produced films continue to gain momentum and play a central role in sustaining cinema traffic.

With the first quarter already showing clear momentum, stakeholders within the film and exhibition sectors will be watching closely to see whether the upward trend continues through the rest of the year, particularly as more Nollywood titles and international releases prepare for theatrical runs.
