Artificial intelligence research firm OpenAI has entered into one of the biggest cloud computing agreements on record, committing to purchase $300 billion worth of computing power from Oracle over the next five years.
The deal, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, underscores the mounting cost of AI development as demand for large-scale data processing infrastructure surges globally.
According to people familiar with the agreement, the contract will require about 4.5 gigawatts of power capacity. Industry experts note that this scale is comparable to the output of more than two Hoover Dams or the annual energy consumption of approximately four million homes.
The partnership places Oracle at the center of OpenAI’s ambitious expansion plans, as the AI company continues to train and deploy increasingly complex models. The deal also reflects broader trends in the technology sector, where cloud providers are racing to secure contracts with leading AI firms whose computational needs have grown exponentially.
Neither OpenAI nor Oracle has publicly commented on the specifics of the arrangement, but analysts suggest the agreement could reshape the competitive landscape of cloud computing, challenging industry leaders like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.
The development further signals that the future of artificial intelligence will depend heavily on access to massive, reliable, and energy-intensive computing resources—raising questions about cost, scalability, and sustainability as adoption accelerates worldwide.
