Rasaq Okoya’s vision, industry, philanthropy celebrated at 85

Date:

At the forefront of entrepreneurship and industry stands one of Nigeria’s most enduring and celebrated industrialists, Aare Rasaq Okoya, the founder of the Eleganza Group.

For over six decades, his name has been synonymous with excellence, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to enterprise, philanthropy and nation-building.

From humble beginnings, Okoya who was born on January 12, 1940, to Tiamiyu Idiatu Okoya, in Lagos Island’s Epetedo area, charted his destiny with determination and vision, displaying an innate business acumen.

Recounting his life’s journey, Okoya had stated that he started his own business at the age of 14 with £70 his mother loaned him, which he invested in acquiring tailoring materials like ribbons, zippers and buttons under the trade name— Okoya Buttons Stores. Making a success out of the business, he had built his first house in Surulere, Lagos, at 19, and by 21, he owned four more houses.

The Eleganza Group, which he established in 1978, remains one of Nigeria’s leading conglomerates, producing quality goods for both local and international markets. Indeed, the Eleganza Industrial City, a sprawling factory complex in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, remains a testament to his entrepreneurial vision.

Speaking about his philosophy, Okoya said, “Honesty, focus, determination, self-belief and passion for what you do are the keys to success. When I started, I guarded my resources jealously and reinvested in my business. That is why Eleganza continues to thrive.

“I derive happiness on the production lines. It keeps me busy and fulfilled.”

Beyond business, Okoya is a philanthropist and committed family man. He has sponsored countless scholarships, built facilities for educational institutions like the University of Ado-Ekiti, and employed thousands. He is also a devout Muslim, funding pilgrimages to Mecca for many.

As a man who embodies tradition and progress, Okoya’s influence extends beyond business and philanthropy. He has been honoured with titles such as the Aare of Lagos and Otun-Aare Adinni of Lagos Central Mosque.

Despite his immense wealth, he remains a core family man; often seen engaging with his wives, children and grandchildren.

Looking back on his illustrious career, Okoya reflects as he celebrates his 85th birthday, “My prayer is to enjoy good health, long life, and leave the legacy of my industry behind. I want Eleganza to outlive me and continue with my philosophy of philanthropy.”

Speaking about retirement, he added, “In a few years, I may slow down. Luckily, I have a younger wife, Shade, who shares my vision and commitment. She’s in the factory every day, ensuring the legacy continues.”
