Date:

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde stated on Wednesday that initial investigations conducted by security agencies indicate that the explosion in the Bodija Area of Ibadan on Tuesday was triggered by explosive devices stored by illegal miners in the area.

The incident resulted in the feared death of at least 10 individuals and hospitalization of 15 others.

The blast also affected key locations such as the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Oyo State House of Assembly, and various residences in different areas.

While further investigations are ongoing, Governor Makinde assured that anyone found responsible for this tragic event will face legal consequences.

He visited the scene on Tuesday night, reporting that illegal miners occupying a house in Bodija were storing explosive devices, leading to the explosion.

Despite initial reports of 10 bodies recovered, the governor confirmed two fatalities and 77 injuries.

He expressed condolences and pledged government support for medical expenses, ensuring the affected individuals receive necessary assistance.

Governor Makinde emphasized that the government would cover the medical bills of victims and assist those whose houses were affected in rebuilding their lives.

He urged residents to remain calm, assuring ongoing rescue operations and deployment of necessary resources to manage the situation effectively.

Emergency contact number 615 was provided for residents to report any emergencies and to allow uninterrupted rescue efforts at the incident site.
