The Navy apprehends a wooden vessel carrying illicit goods in Lagos

Date:

The patrol team of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT successfully apprehended a wooden fishing boat loaded with bags of rice in the Agbara creeks of Lagos State during a routine patrol at 5:30 a.m. on October 11.

This achievement was made possible with the assistance of the state-of-the-art Maritime Domain Awareness Facility.

Commander NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Kolawole Olumide Oguntuga, reported that upon spotting the patrol team, the boat’s occupants hastily abandoned their vessel and fled.

The patrol team promptly secured the boat, which was taking on water, and unloaded a total of 44 bags of parboiled rice.

Following established protocols, the 44 bags of rice were transported to the NNS BEECROFT base and handed over to officials from the Nigeria Customs Service for further necessary actions.

The Nigerian Navy is committed to enforcing customs laws and supporting government policies, including the empowerment of small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) for economic growth.

The Navy’s actions in confiscating contraband, particularly preventing the importation of foreign rice into the country, will undoubtedly contribute to the efforts of local farmers in generating revenue to alleviate poverty and food insecurity, ultimately fostering economic prosperity.

Under the leadership of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, the Nigerian Navy remains steadfast in its mission to combat all forms of maritime crimes, thus enhancing national security and stability.
