On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu granted his approval for the appointment of Mr. Ola Olukoyede as the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), initially for a four-year term, which is renewable, subject to Senate confirmation.
This development follows the suspension of the former EFCC chief, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, almost four months ago.
The President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, confirmed Mr. Olukoyede’s appointment, attributing it to the resignation of the suspended Executive Chairman, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa.
The announcement was made in a statement titled ‘President Tinubu appoints new EFCC Chairman and Secretary of the Commission.’
Mr. Olukoyede, a seasoned lawyer with over 22 years of experience, specializes in regulatory compliance and fraud management.
He has a strong background in EFCC operations, having previously served as Chief of Staff to the Executive Chairman (2016-2018) and Secretary to the Commission (2018-2023), fulfilling the statutory requirements for the EFCC Chairman position.
Additionally, President Tinubu also approved the appointment of Mr. Muhammad Hammajoda as the Secretary of the EFCC for an initial term of five years, subject to Senate confirmation.
Hammajoda, a public administrator, brings extensive experience in public finance management, holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Maiduguri and a Master’s in Business Administration from the same university.
The President urged the newly appointed leadership of the EFCC to demonstrate their competence in this crucial national role, emphasizing that the fight against corruption is a central focus of his Renewed Hope agenda, underpinned by a reformed institutional architecture in the anti-corruption sector.
