Osimhen shatters a 24-year Nigeria drought, securing the CAF Player of the Year award

Date:

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen and Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala achieved remarkable success at the 2023 CAF Awards in Marrakech, Morocco, making history as the first country to claim both the men and women’s Player of the Year awards.

Osimhen secured the CAF Player of The Year Award, marking Nigeria’s first win since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999, while Oshoala clinched her sixth Women’s Player of The Year title, solidifying her status as Africa’s most successful women’s player.

Nigeria’s triumph extended to other categories, with Chiamaka Nnadozie winning Women’s Goalkeeper of The Year and the Super Falcons being named Women’s Team of The Year.

Despite a setback in the Women’s Young Player category, Nigeria celebrated a vibrant night of recognition, capped by the announcement of Morocco as the first African team to reach the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup, securing them the Men’s National Team of The Year award.

The awards, determined by votes from media representatives, coaches, and national team captains, showcased outstanding achievements across the African football landscape.
