Igboho, Akintoye write Tinubu, demand Yoruba exit from Nigeria

0

The Yoruba Self-Determination Movement, led by Prof Banji Akintoye and Chief Sunday Adeyemo, alias Sunday Igboho, has written an open letter to President Bola Tinubu, seeking a peaceful breakaway of Yoruba people from Nigeria.

The open letter, dated April 17, 2024, was signed by both Akintoye, Igboho and one Ola Ademola.

They called on the President to within the next two months set up a negotiation team to negotiate the exit of the Yoruba people from Nigeria.

The letter by the Yoruba Nation arrowheads came about a week after some armed agitators invaded the Oyo State Government House, attempting to hoist their flag on the premises of the state House of Assembly.

The agitators were subdued and 29 of them were last week taken before a magistrates’ court in Ibadan, which ordered that they should be remanded in the prison custody.

Both Akintoye and Igboho dissociated themselves from the violent action.

However, in their open letter made available to our correspondent in Ibadan on Sunday, the Yoruba Self-Determination Movement, said, “We have the honour to send to Your Excellency this important letter on behalf of the many millions of Yoruba people at home in Yorubaland in Nigeria and in the Yoruba Diaspora in almost all countries across the world.

“We send this letter as a follow-up to our earlier letter, dated August 06, 2022, which we delivered to your predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari, in his exalted position then as President of Nigeria.

“Since 2015, the Fulani have been killing widely among the other peoples of Nigeria, including us Yoruba, destroying farms, villages and other assets, kidnapping men, women and children, extorting large amounts of money as ransom from friends and family of the kidnapped, and repeatedly asserting their intention to seize the homelands of all the indigenous peoples of Nigeria for the purpose of turning all into a Fulani homeland.”

The group said in the Middle Belt, horrendous blood-letting was going on with many families forced into Internally Displaced People Camps while many of their villages were seized by the Fulani and renamed as Fulani villages.

“In our Yoruba homeland, our people are resisting somewhat better, but the Fulani attacks and killings and kidnappings are unrelenting and are coming daily, leading to horrific instability, and forcing most of our farmers to abandon farming altogether, thereby dooming Yoruba people to years and years of famine.”

It further alleged that an unofficial estimate showed that Fulani had killed as many as 29,000 Yoruba people since 2015 till date, adding that aforementioned reasons were enough for them to seek breakaway from Nigeria.

“All these actions by the Fulani are, to us Yoruba, a sufficient reason for our seeking to separate our Yoruba Nation from Nigeria. Most of us, Yoruba have no confidence in the ‘restructuring’ that some of our most respected Yoruba leaders (such as our fathers in our highly exalted Afenifere) are advocating.

“And our reason is that we know that restructuring cannot keep the Fulani marauders away from our homeland. Since, after restructuring, the Fulani would still be Nigerians like us, and would still have full citizens’ rights to come in large numbers, and with weapons and intent to kill and destroy and seize land, to our homeland.

“The Fulani elite seem to be saying in effect that they intend to make Nigeria ungovernable for President Tinubu, and that they would never accept any official action of his.

“We are acting for and on behalf of our 60 million Yoruba people of the Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo State, respectively, plus the Yoruba Local Government Areas of Kogi and Kwara State, and plus the Itshekiri homeland of Delta State, all together constituting the Yorubaland in Nigeria, hereby most humbly place our crowning request before Your Excellency as follows:

“That the Nigerian Federal Government shall, within the next two months, but not later than June 15, 2024, inform us Yoruba Self-determination Movement that the Nigerian Federal Government has graciously agreed to our proposal for negotiation and that they have set up a negotiation team that will meet and have a dialogue with our Yoruba Nation’s negotiation team.

“That the Nigerian Federal Government shall invite the United Nations, African Union and the Economic Community of West African States, to send observers to the negotiation meetings.”

It, therefore, promised to forward the list of its negotiation team to the government as soon as it received a message in response to its request for the negotiation.

Issues as NIMC plans fresh ID cards – Daily Trust

0

The federal government, through the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS), has launched an ambitious innovative identity solution with payment functionality for all types of social and financial services.

But the new card project will cost the government trillions of naira to execute, Daily Trust on Sunday has gathered. To produce a card of that nature for a citizen, it will cost the government between N5,000 and N10,000. If that is multiplied by 104 million, which is the number of Nigerians with the unique National Identity Numbers (NINs), it will cost the government not less than N1.04 trillion, Daily Trust on Sunday can report.

The new card, which is to be powered by AfriGO, a national domestic card scheme, according to the government, is layered with verifiable national identity features. It is also backed by the NIMC Act nimber 23 of 2007, which mandates the commission to enroll and issue a general multipurpose card (GMPC) to Nigerians and legal residents, according to a statement signed by NIMC’s spokesman, Kayode Adegoke last week.

“This card will address the demand for physical identification enabling cardholders to prove their identity, access government and private social services, facilitate financial inclusion for disenfranchised Nigerians, empower citizens, as well as encourage increased participation in nation building,” Adegoke noted in the statement.”

The identity commission added that only registered citizens and legal residents with the National Identification Number (NIN) would be eligible to request the card. The card, which will be produced according to ICAO standards, is positioned as the country’s default national identity.

In addition to this functionality, cardholders will also be able to use the card as debit or prepaid cards by linking the same to bank accounts of their choice. The card shall enable eligible persons, especially those financially excluded from social and financial services, to have access to multiple government intervention programmes.

However, tongues are wagging over the new project and the money so far spent on the current NIN, which equally serves virtually the same functions as the new card.

Daily Trust on Sunday gathered that billions of naira has been spent in the current National Identity Number project. The NIN, which was well crafted and proposed by the last NIMC administration and approved by the then federal government, was supported by the World Bank.

The project was worth $433 million, according to a NIMC official who requested for anonymity. This is aside from what the federal government spent on its part to facilitate the process.

“It was learnt that the new NIMC leadership misunderstood the world Bank project by assuming that the money was in the commission, not realising that it was worked out in such a way that only by generating a NIN is each licensed private entity paid $1 (one dollar) as approved in the project,” a source told Daily Trust on Sunday on Friday.

Another source said that by hurriedly stopping the licensed agents and going back to opening up the NIN Verification Service (NVS), the new NIMC director- general and her management team not only stopped the hand of the clock of progress of the current Nigerian ID project, they also compromised national security. But the NIMC said this wasn’t true.

The claim of starting a new ID project (of 3 IDs) is merely to cover up for the lack of direction, another source alleged.

‘Harmonisation is what is required’

One of the reasons some Nigerians believe the new ID project will be a waste of efforts and money is that even those who applied for the current national ID card have not been able to collect theirs after many years.

Also, a Lagos-based expert on digital identity, Idowu Derele, said there was actually no “new ID card project” in view. Derele said it had become clear that the new NIMC management is merely desperate to appear to be seen to be performing.

He said that rather than build on the achievements recorded by the immediate past leadership of the commission, which by the way received global commendation, it is relying on propaganda.

He added that, “The federal government, aware of the need to bring the many ID systems into one, set up the harmonisation committee (with NIMC as the secretariat). So, what sense is there in talking about a new ID card project with the NIN as captured in the NIMC Act?”

Another official who also pleaded anonymity said that the last NIMC administration, realising that the federal government did not have resources to pay for the card for each citizen as spelt out in the commission’s act, decided to implement the NIN, which itself is also in the act. “In seven years and 10 months, it grew NIN enrolment from 7 million to 104 million. This remarkable achievement needs to be built upon, not discarded.

“Can the federal government that is talking of cutting cost in the absence of resources afford to spend N5,000 to N10,000 per physical card for each citizen? The NIN is the way to go as this is the global trend (social security number in US, aadhar number in India, insurance number in UK),” the source told Daily Trust on Sunday.

Another expert who also requested to be anonymous said that by opening up the NVS, the new NIMC management exposed the data of Nigerians.

“This is a national security threat. The Nigerian Data Protection Commission is also failing in its duty by not sanctioning the NIMC for compromising citizens’ data and not respecting their privacy. The NDPC has thus become complicit in NIMC’s data breach,” he said.

But speaking with our reporter on Friday, Adegoke, the NIMC spokesman, said the commission was not starting a new project. “It is the continuation of the old project. We just want to harmonise it and add more features. The media is getting it wrong,” he said.

Adegoke said the claim that the NVS would compromise national security was a false assumption. He said the NVS was designed to ease the NIN registration and make it seamless.

The NIMC spokesman, who later sent a write-up on the proposed card to this reporter, said the new national ID card was a single, convenient and general multipurpose card (GMPC), eliminating the need for multiple cards.

He said the single GMPC had multiple use cases: payments/financial, government intervention/services, travel etc

“The National Identity Management Commission is working with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System to deliver the payment and financial use cases.

“The card will be powered by the AFRIGO card scheme, an indigenous scheme powered by the NIBSS.

“Applicants for the card will have to request for their NIN through a self-service online portal, NIMC offices, or their respective banks

“The card will be issued through the applicants’ respective banks in line with existing protocols with the issuance of debit/credit cards.

“The card can be picked up by holders at a designated centre or delivered to the applicants at the requested location at an extra cost to be borne by the applicants,” Adegoke stated in the write-up.

Marketers give new fuel prices as another refinery gets ready after Dangote

0

After a long wait, the Port Harcourt refinery is getting closer to beginning operations while oil marketers wait patiently

There is optimism that when the refinery finally starts producing products, it will help reduce fuel prices by N150

The Dangote Refinery has already taken the bold step of reducing the diesel price from N1,700 to N1,000 per litre

Legit.ng journalist Dave Ibemere has over a decade of business journalism experience with in-depth knowledge of the Nigerian economy, stocks, and general market trends.

Oil marketers have visited the Port Harcourt Refinery Company in Rivers State and have expressed readiness to load Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, from the facility soon.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has also instructed workers to prepare the refinery as soon as possible.

PH refinery is almost ready

Punch reports that oil marketers confirmed after a visit to the PH refinery that the facility is almost ready to release products.

They also expressed optimism that the refinery and Dangote Petroleum Refinery would crash fuel prices below N500/litre when it starts releasing products.

Legit.ng had earlier reported that the Dangote refinery is projected to start supplying petrol to the market in May.

Marketers speak on new fuel prices.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria said PH refinery might start releasing refined petroleum products this month.

IPMAN National Public Relations Officer Chief Ukadike Chinedu said independent dealers have started planning to purchase and load products from the refinery, adding that operators are optimistic about a price reduction.

On the expected petrol prices from the refinery, he said:

“NNPC is still giving us PMS at N567.7/litre, so we want to believe that the Port Harcourt refinery should give us the product at N500/litre or less than that.

Also, Punch reports that the National President of IPMAN, Abubakar Maigandi, said the refinery might sell petrol at N500/litre or below.

IPMAN president noted:

“We are happy the price of diesel is coming down, thanks to Dangote refinery. As for petrol, the sale has not started. We hope petrol too will come down to like N500.

“But if the dollar continues falling, it may go back to the normal rate”.

Dangote crash diesel to N1,000 per litre

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the diesel price from the Dangote Refinery has now been reviewed from N1,200 to a new record of N1,000 per litre.

This came as marketers advocated reducing Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s diesel pump price to N700 to N850 per litre.

Before the refinery began production, the product was sold at a high cost due to foreign exchange issues and market situations.

Abiodun Flags Off Sale of Rice At Discounted Rates, Says Ogun Remains Committed To Workers’ Welfare

0

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, at the weekend, commenced the sale of rice to civil servants in the state as parts of his commitment to the welfare of the workforce.

The event took place at the ‘Oja Irorun’ Civil Servants Farmers’ Market at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Governor Abiodun, who was represented by the Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya said the occasion was a significant step in the ongoing efforts of the state government at improving the living standards of workers in the state.

The governor praised the dedication and the commitment of the workers to service, which he noted contributed immensely to the success achieved by his administration.

“@OGSG_Official civil servants’ dedication and hard work form the bedrock of the progress and prosperity of our dear state. Recognising this invaluable essence of workers to the actualisation of the policies and programmes of the state government, the administration has graciously approved the sale of high quality bags of rice at discounted prices exclusively to the workforce,” the governor said.

Prince Abiodun urged workers across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to take full advantage of the opportunity and embrace the good gesture by the state government.

In his welcome address, the Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Establishments and Training, Mrs. Lydia Fajounbo appreciated the government for the initiative, which is one of the many interventions by the government to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal for the state workforce.

The Head of Service, however, urged the workers to reciprocate the good gesture of government by remaining dedicated to duties and collectively work for the progress of the state.

In their separate goodwill messages, the Chairman, Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JNC), Comrade Isa Olude and his counterpart from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ademola Ahmed-Benco, appreciated the state government for the initiative, which they said, would restore the purchasing power of the people and promote the welfare of workers.

The union leaders added that the gesture was a testament that the state has a caring and listening governor whom they are proud of, and charged the workers to reciprocate the gesture by effectively and efficiently discharging their statutory duties.

Two of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Temitope Akintayo from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as well as Mr. Olabanji Sanni, from the Ministry of Environment, thanked the state government for putting the process into motion and promised to keep working assiduously towards effective service delivery.

The bags of rice were handed over to the beneficiaries by Mr. Onasanya on behalf of the government while buses were also provided at no cost to convey the workers from the venue of the programme to a reasonable distance.

It would be recalled that the Prince Abiodun-led administration has been made concerted efforts towards ensuring that the workforce and the entire people of the Gateway State are shielded as much as possible from the attendant effects of the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government through various interventions.

The interventions include provision of monthly cash palliative, payment of peculiar allowance to deserving workers, provision of CNG buses workers and the citizens as well as the unprecedented payment of a robust end of year bonus to all civil/public servants of the State last December, amongst others.

Bandits reportedly kill 6 soldiers and captain in Niger State

0

Bandits reportedly ambushed and gunned down six soldiers at Roro, Karaga and Rumace communities, Bassa Ward, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

A captain was also said to have been abducted during the attack which occurred on Friday night, April 19, 2024.

It was gathered that the abducted captain identified as Adamu, was reportedly killed.

According to Daily Trust, the soldiers had left their camps at Allawa and Erena to respond to a distress call when the armed bandits ambushed them at Roro village.

The bandits were also said to have killed a hunter and two farmers as well as burnt houses, food banks and motorcycles.

Residents, who spoke to the publication on Saturday about the latest killing of soldiers, said that the incident happened around 9pm and lasted for hours.

“Six soldiers lost their lives and one volunteer hunter,” one of the residents said.

“All hands were on deck” to bring the perpetrators to book. All hands are on deck to bring the perpetrators to face the law. Government, on her own, is doing everything possible to end the insecurity issues,” he said.

“Additionally, the government will stand by the bereaved and share their grief as well as support them, now and in the long term.

PRESIDENTIAL CNG INITIATIVE SET FOR ROLLOUT

0

After the removal of the wasteful fuel subsidy on May 29, 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu launched the Presidential CNG Initiative in October last year to deliver cheaper, safer and more climate friendly energy. The CNG Initiative was designed to deliver compressed natural gas especially for mass transit.

The Federal Government as part of the many intervention programmes to reduce the burden of increase in pump price on the masses, provided N100 billion (part of the N500 billion palliative budget) to purchase 5500 CNG vehicles (buses and tricycles), 100 Electric buses and over 20,000 CNG conversion kits, alongside spurring the development of CNG refilling stations and electric charging stations.

After months of detailed planning and background work, the committee driving the initiative is set to deliver on President Tinubu’s vision and promise.

Already, the committee, being led by Michael Oluwagbemi, an oil and gas expert, has delivered some major foundational reforms to enable the new CNG and Electric Vehicles future the President promised. All is now ready for delivery of the first set of critical assets for deployment and launch of the CNG initiative ahead of the first anniversary of the Tinubu administration on May 29.

With necessary tax and duty waivers approved by President Tinubu in December 2023, the PCNGI committee is partnering with the private sector to deliver the promise on the initiative. The private sector has responded with over $50 million in actual investments in refuelling stations, conversion centres, and mother stations.

Also, a safety policy document on 80 standards and regulations that must be strictly adhered to by operators has been developed and approved to ensure CNG conversions are done safely and reliably.

The deployment of CNG buses and tricycles and the vision to get at least one million natural gas propelled vehicles on our roads by 2027 will mark a major energy transition in our country’s transportation industry. The use of more expensive diesel and PMS will gradually be phased out, when many vehicles, including trucks run on natural gas, which our nation has in abundance in at least 30 out of the 36 states of the federation.

As studies have shown, one of the main causes of air pollution is primarily the amount of gases emitted by gasoline and diesel engines. To reduce the pollution, some countries of the world, such as India, China, Iran, Pakistan, Brazil , Argentina, Italy have built fleets of natural gas powered vehicles, instead of going the route of relying on liquid petroleum products propelled vehicles. Natural gas vehicles reduce tail pipe emission by up to 40 percent, and Nigeria’s commitment to this course will enable her meet her nationally determined commitments (NDCs) under Paris Climate Accord to which we are signatory.

From the end of May, Nigeria will take some baby steps to join such nations that already have large fleets of CNG vehicles.

Remarkably, the Tinubu administration, in driving the nation to the desired destination, has flagged open a new industry, along with thousands of new jobs.

Four plants owned by JET, Mikano, Mojo, and Brilliant EV located in various parts of the country are involved in the assembly of the Semi Knocked Down (SKD) components of the CNG buses. JET, which has received the SKD parts is coupling the buses in Lagos and is working towards delivering 200 units before the first anniversary of the Tinubu administration.

Brilliant EV will assemble electric vehicles. It is awaiting the SKD parts, which will arrive in due course. The electric vehicles it will produce are meant for states such as Kano and Borno, which do not have access to CNG for now. They will also be available in key Nigerian cities and university campuses. It must be noted that soon to be completed gas pipeline projects initiated by the Buhari administration and being completed by NNPCL (the AKK Pipeline) will take gas into the hinterlands of North East and North West where there is current paucity.

In all, over 600 buses are targeted for production in the first phase that will be accomplished this year.

A new plant on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway will assemble thousands of tricycles. The SKD parts manufactured by the Chinese company LUOJIA in partnership with its local partner to support the consortium of local suppliers of CNG tricycles are set for shipment to Nigeria and expected to arrive early in May. About 2,500 of the tricycles will be ready before May 29, 2024.

Thousands of conversion kits for petrol powered buses and taxis that want to migrate to CNG are also ready with CNG cylinders. The Federal Government intends to provide them at subsidized rates, especially to commercial vehicle drivers to bring down the cost of public transportation.

As part of private sector collaboration, NIPCO and BOVAS are involved in offering refilling services for the CNG vehicles and also serving as conversion centres. NIPCO is setting up 32 stations nationwide to offer the services. The company has completed the set up of four of the CNG stations. Likewise, BOVAS is setting up eight stations in Ibadan, two each in Ekiti, Abuja and four in Ilorin. MRS is also involved. It is making efforts to announce where its refilling stations and conversion centres will be.

The NNPC Limited which had launched an on-and-off CNG initiative in the past is joining the new initiative. It is expected soon to announce the locations for CNG refilling and CNG conversion centres nationwide.

In addition, the PCNGI is working with 22 other agency partners, including the Standards Organisation of Nigeria(SON) and Nigeria Automotive Design and Development Council to deliver 80 Natural Gas Vehicle Conversion and Associated Appliances Standards for the country.

For proper monitoring, PCNGI will also launch MYCNG.NG App. The app will embed the Nigeria Gas Vehicle Monitoring Systems, which will show CNG conversion and refuelling sites in the country.

The Tinubu administration is an enabler of the evolving CNG industry. In collaboration with the private sector, the PCNGI is set to deliver 100 conversion workshops and 60 refuelling sites spread across 18 states before the end of this year.

The vision of Mr. President to deliver one million gas vehicles cannot be possible without the private sector, including the RTEAN, NARTO, NURTW, and players in the downstream sector of the transportation chain and financiers.

FG expecting $2.2 billion loan from World Bank- Wale Edun

The Federal Government is looking forward to receiving around $2.2 billion single-digit interest loan from the World bank and another budget support facility from the African Development Bank (AfDB).

Minister of Finance, Wale Edun disclosed this during the press briefing at the end of Nigeria’s activities at the World Bank/IMF Spring Meetings in Washington DC, the United States on Saturday.

While speaking on the sources of international funding to the Nigerian economy, the Minister listed diaspora remittances, foreign portfolio investments and facilities from the World bank and other international development partners.

He stated, “We have qualified for the processing just this week to the Board of Directors of the World bank of a total package of $2.25 billion of what you can call ‘the closest you can get to a free lunch’- virtually a grant. It’s for about 10- 20 years moratorium and about 1% interest.

“In addition, there is a similar budgetary support – low-interest funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB) and, clearly, there are also ongoing discussions with foreign direct investors across many sectors.”

Edun also tapped issuing dollar-denominated securities specifically targeted at Nigerians in the diaspora and those with foreign-denominated savings in Nigeria as another measure to attract forex inflows into the country.

He disclosed that the Federal Government hopes to issue the bonds later this year.

Efforts of fiscal side of the economy to spur growth

Furthermore, the Minister highlighted the efforts of the fiscal side of the economy in complimenting the recent monetary policy reforms by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

According to the Minister, the issuing of government securities at an interest rate closer to the CBN’s monetary policy rate (MPR) is an indication of the collaboration between both sides of the economy in tackling inflation in the country and attracting forex inflows.

He listed the agricultural sector as one area the Bola Tinubu administration is looking to spur growth in the medium term, noting that efforts in that area include the distribution of fertilisers and seeds to reduce food prices and enhance food security.

Other programs, according to the Minister, are: increasing power generation to about 6000 megawatts within six months, provision of infrastructure especially housing with the goal of making low-interest mortgages available to Nigerians, revamping of the social investment program and proposed economic stabilisation plan.

Fear of Naira Spraying Grips Party-Goers, NiDOM Boss Shares Experience

The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, on Saturday, recounted her recent experience at a birthday party, highlighting the fear of spraying the naira.

In a video shared on her Instagram page, she said, “Just coming from a birthday party and guess what? Everybody was afraid to spray.

“But I guess we have to learn how to spray. Don’t throw money around, do it with class and dignity.

“Everybody was afraid o, including me.”

The apprehension surrounding the spraying of naira comes in the wake of recent legal actions taken against individuals accused of abusing the national currency.

PUNCH reports that the Federal High Court in Lagos convicted controversial cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky for abusing the naira.

Bobrisky was sentenced to six months imprisonment without the option of a fine.

Similarly, a businessman and socialite, Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, was also arraigned on three counts bordering on abuse of naira by allegedly spraying and tampering with the nation’s currency at a social event.

The celebrity bar man pleaded not guilty to tampering and abusing the naira during his trial and was granted N10m bail with two sureties in like sum.
