0

Sango, known as Xango in Brazil, holds immense importance to the Yoruba culture in Brazil. As a deity representing power, fire, lightning, and justice, Sango embodies the strength and resilience of the Yoruba people. In Brazil, where a significant Afro-Brazilian population exists, Sango serves as a symbol of cultural identity and preservation of Yoruba heritage.

The veneration of Sango in Brazil is deeply rooted in rituals and worship practices, often involving music, dance, and offerings. These rituals act as a means to connect with ancestral traditions, ensuring the survival and continuity of Yoruba culture throughout the Afro-Brazilian diaspora. They provide individuals with a sense of belonging, fostering a strong sense of community and unity among Brazilians of Yoruba descent.

NIOB calls on the federal government to provide subsidies for cement

The Nigerian Institute of Building, Lagos Chapter, has called on the Federal Government to intervene and reduce the cost of cement in the country.

It made the call at the press briefing in preparation for the 32nd Builders Conference themed “Safe and Sustainable Building Production Management” in Lagos recently.

The Vice President of NIOB, Lagos State Chapter, Adeoye Thomas, said the intervention of the Federal Government was needed to stop the skyrocketing prices of cement.

He said, “Everything is based on foreign exchange, which is very bad, and it cannot be taken away from the manufacturers of those cement because in the business to make a profit. However, in advanced countries, the government intervenes. If the need is to subsidise, the government should do it. If not, sharp practices would become the order of the day, birthing building more collapses.

“Buying cement at the rate of N5,000 or more is not sustainable. Hence, buildings would keep on collapsing as developers just want to make a profit, and they do this also by engaging quacks and using substandard materials. The intervention of the government is very important either by subsidising or collaborating with the manufacturers.”

In the same vein, the Honorary Secretary, NIOB, Lagos State Chapter, Ogundare Abiodun, said there was a need for the government to intervene in the areas where the cost of production can be reduced, especially for the raw materials.

He said, “About 10 per cent of the material used in the production of cement is imported, and we have 90 per cent here in the country. If we have 90 per cent here, the government can work on whatever cost to be incurred when producing locally to help reduce the cost of production, hence the money would come down rather than increase.”

The collision involved two vehicles: a Mercedes Benz ML350 with the license plate AKD424HH and a Volkswagen commercial bus with the license plate KSF934YA.

According to an eyewitness named Opeyemi Lateef, the accident occurred when the Mercedes Benz driver tried to avoid colliding with a pedestrian attempting to cross the road.

This evasive action resulted in a loss of control, leading to the collision with the parked commercial bus at the bus stop.

Another eyewitness, who preferred to remain anonymous, attributed the accident to a combination of indiscriminate parking of commercial vehicles at the bus stop and excessive speeding.

APC criticizes PDP on Independence Day while the opposition questions the content of Tinubu’s speech

0

The Peoples Democratic Party has attributed the current hardships faced by Nigerians to President Bola Tinubu and criticized his recent 63rd Independence Day address as lacking substance and innovative ideas.

The opposition party, through its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, stated that President Tinubu’s speech underscores the ruling APC administration’s apparent incapacity and incompetence in handling the vital task of governance, which appears beyond its capabilities.

The PDP expressed concern over the hasty implementation of poorly conceived policies by the current APC administration, leading to a severe economic downturn with devastating effects on the country’s productive sectors and causing widespread suffering among Nigerians.

Additionally, the PDP found fault with President Tinubu’s welfare package announcement, which offered a meager monthly stipend of N25,000 for six months to low-grade workers while still promoting his promise of Compressed Natural Gas buses.

In response, the Director of Publicity for the APC, Bala Ibrahim, placed the blame for Nigeria’s economic challenges squarely on the PDP.

He dismissed the PDP’s statements, emphasizing that the country’s current situation is a result of the PDP’s mismanagement during its time in power.

Ibrahim defended President Tinubu’s intentions in his broadcast, highlighting his commitment to addressing the needs of lower-grade workers and suggesting that the PDP’s criticism stems from their inability to accept their defeat and move on.

Lagos facilitates the transport of 310 pilgrims to the destinations of Jordan and Israel

On Saturday night, the Lagos State Government successfully transported 310 eager pilgrims who were originally slated to participate in the Easter pilgrimage to the Kingdom of Jordan and Israel.

These pilgrims safely arrived in the Kingdom of Jordan early Sunday morning, following a seven-hour flight that departed from Muritala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, and landed at the Queen Alia International Airport in Jordan, as stated in an official announcement.

Prior to their departure, the pilgrims gathered on Saturday for final administrative and logistical preparations at the Chapel of Christ The Light in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.

During this gathering, a session of prayers and praises was also held.

Rev Yakubu Pam, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission, addressed the pilgrims at the chapel, emphasizing the importance of dedicating time to pray for Nigeria, especially as the country celebrated its 63rd Independence Day anniversary.

Very Rev. Bukola Adeleke, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Christian Religion, reassured the intending pilgrims of Nigeria’s resilience and its ability to regain a strong position among nations.

He expressed gratitude for the unwavering support provided by the state governor to ensure that the pilgrims have a rewarding experience and receive top-notch welfare packages.

Mrs. Yetunde Gbafe, the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, urged the intending pilgrims to diligently follow all the instructions and guidelines provided in the pilgrimage handbooks, emphasizing the importance of adhering to Dos and Don’ts for a successful journey.

Lawyers representing Tinubu object as court mandates the disclosure of Chicago academic records

0

The United States District Court in the Northern District of Illinois has ruled in favor of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, ordering Chicago State University to release President Bola Tinubu’s academic records by today (Monday).

Tinubu’s legal team argued that these documents wouldn’t be relevant to Atiku’s appeal in the Nigerian Supreme Court.

Atiku had previously obtained an order from a US magistrate for CSU to provide Tinubu’s academic records, including admission records, attendance dates, degrees, awards, and honors.

As the deadline approached, Tinubu’s lawyers requested a review of the magistrate’s decision by a district judge, which was granted.

They argued that the records were not useful in Nigerian courts and that Atiku’s request was intrusive.

In response, Atiku urged the court to reject Tinubu’s request entirely, stating that CSU had not objected to making the academic records public.

The court ruled in favor of Atiku, finding that his interest outweighed any intrusion on Tinubu’s privacy.

The judge adopted the magistrate’s ruling, setting an expedited schedule for discovery.

This development may impact Atiku’s appeal before the Supreme Court of Nigeria, but the judge clarified that his verdict did not express any view on the merits of the underlying claims or the validity of the Nigerian election.

A member of the PDP National Executive Council, Timothy Osadolor, viewed Tinubu’s appeal as unnecessary, while one of President Tinubu’s attorneys downplayed the importance of the academic documents, citing the Electoral Act’s restrictions on introducing new evidence on appeal.

In summary, the US District Court ruled in favor of Atiku’s request for Tinubu’s academic records, which may have implications for Atiku’s Supreme Court appeal in Nigeria, though it remains to be seen how significant these records will be in the case.
