We have documented 1,000 pre-election legal cases related to the 2023 polls, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reported grappling with over 1,000 pre-election litigations leading up to the 2023 general election.

During a presentation at a two-day workshop in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, INEC’s Director of Legal Drafting and Clearance, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, addressed the issue, titled “Effects of Litigation on INEC’s Preparations for Kogi, Imo, And Bayelsa Governorship Election.

Babalola attributed these pre-election litigations to disputes arising from political party primaries, candidate substitutions, and parties failing to adhere to their internal rules and election schedules.

Pre-election litigation pertains to cases where the legal cause of action occurred before the actual election, as defined in Section 285(14) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

She emphasized that many of these cases stemmed from a lack of internal party democracy, where political parties didn’t adhere to their own rules and guidelines.

The unique nature of pre-election matters couldn’t be underestimated, as judgments in these cases could significantly disrupt planning, logistics, funding, and the confidence of election participants.

Furthermore, Babalola highlighted that judgments in pre-election matters could sometimes be delivered just before the election, preventing INEC from conducting elections for certain positions and necessitating the replacement of candidates after the printing of ballot papers, among other challenges.

She mentioned that, following the 2019 general elections, INEC was ordered to issue 94 certificates of return in pre-election matters.

Additionally, INEC had to withdraw seven certificates of return that were previously issued and reissue them in compliance with court orders during the 2023 general election.

According to Babachir Lawal, the APC has transformed into a party with a predominantly Islamic identity

0

David Babachir Lawal, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu and the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for what he perceives as a shift from the party’s original national status to what he calls an Islamic party.

He accuses the party of being insensitive and disregarding the rights of Nigerians by altering the party’s identity to suit their agenda.

In a recent statement from Abuja, Babachir Lawal challenges the ruling party to have the courage to rename itself the “Islamic Party of Nigeria.

This statement appears to be a response to criticism from the APC, following his assertion that Peter Obi, not Tinubu, won the 2023 presidential election.

Babachir Lawal stands by his position and urges the APC to address the issues he raised instead of attacking him.

He expresses his sympathy for a Christian within the APC who may feel pressured to conform to the party’s Islamic orientation.

He also points out that when the APC was founded in 2013/2014, it aimed to be a national party that embraced all socio-political and religious tendencies in Nigeria.

However, he believes that the party has now transformed into an Islamic party, evident in the religious composition of its leadership.

Babachir Lawal highlights that the current party leadership campaigned on an Islamization platform and suggests that all that remains for the party is to change its name.

He emphasizes that he wants a Nigeria that works for everyone, where freedom of speech is guaranteed, and citizens can pursue their ambitions peacefully.

He also criticizes the government’s handling of issues like the prolonged detention of the EFCC Chairman and the CBN governor.

In conclusion, Babachir Lawal firmly maintains his claim that Peter Obi had the majority of votes in the presidential election, asserting that both INEC and the APC behaved questionably in the election, which, in his opinion, validates his assertion.

Coach suggests that it’s improbable for Messi to participate in any more MLS matches this season

0

Inter Miami head coach Tata Martino has stated that Lionel Messi is unlikely to feature in any more MLS matches during the remainder of the 2023 season, according to a report from the Daily Mail.

This decision has been prompted by Inter Miami’s failure to qualify for the playoffs, marking the conclusion of their season, notably culminating in a 1-0 home defeat to Cincinnati earlier this month.

Despite his recovery from injury to make himself available for that particular match, Messi’s time on the field that night was limited to just 35 minutes.

His inaugural MLS season has concluded in disappointment, as he missed the preceding four matches due to a muscle injury sustained during a 4-0 victory over Toronto, including a loss in the US Open Cup final to the Houston Dynamo.

With only two regular-season MLS matches remaining, Coach Martino of Miami has suggested that their team captain, Messi, is unlikely to participate to mitigate any potential risks.

Messi will not be part of the Wednesday match against Charlotte at DRV PNK Stadium, especially after his recent involvement and scoring twice for Argentina in their 2-0 victory against Peru on Tuesday.

The final game of Miami’s season is scheduled against the same opponent in North Carolina this Saturday.

Martino has explained, “We will assess not only Leo but all players who have been away with their national teams when they return on Thursday, as we are out of the playoffs, and we want to avoid any unnecessary risks.”

Despite the disappointment of missing the playoffs, Miami’s overall season has shown promise since Lionel Messi’s arrival.

In a matter of months, they have transformed from being at the bottom of the MLS standings to playoff contenders, reaching the finals of the US Open Cup and winning the Leagues Cup.

With the Barcelona legend set to be with them from the beginning of the next season, there is a sense of optimism within the franchise that they can make further strides in the league standings.

Coach Martino is committed to using the remaining two matches as a foundation for improvement.

We want to compete, and it’s our responsibility to finish the season as strongly as possible,” he emphasized.

In some ways, we aim to enhance the team’s image based on our recent performance.

For the coaching staff, it’s a significant opportunity as we’re regaining players we haven’t had for a while, and we can use these matches to evaluate and make decisions for the upcoming season.

The Senate has officially approved the appointments of Olukoyede, Shehu, and Hammajoda

0

The Senate has officially approved the nominations of three key individuals: Mr. Ola Olukoyede, Halima Shehu, and Muhammd Hammajoda.

President Bola Tinubu put forth these nominations, designating Olukoyede as the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Shehu as the national coordinator of the National Social Investment Programme Agency, and Muhammd Hammajoda as the new secretary of the nation’s anti-corruption agency.

This confirmation took place within the upper chamber on Wednesday, October 18, following President Tinubu’s formal request, which was conveyed to the Senate during Tuesday’s plenary session by the Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau.

On October 12, President Tinubu had given his approval for the appointment of Olukoyede as the Executive Chairman of the commission and Hammajoda as Secretary, both for an initial renewable term of four years, pending the Senate’s confirmation.

Notably, this appointment of Olukoyede came nearly four months after the suspension of the former chairman of the anti-corruption agency, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, by President Tinubu.

Olukoyede, the new EFCC boss, boasts over 22 years of experience as a lawyer specializing in regulatory compliance, fraud management, and corporate intelligence.

He previously held roles as the Chief of Staff to former EFCC chairman, Ibrahim Magu, and later as the commission’s Secretary from 2018 to 2023.

Additionally, he served as a member of the Fraud Advisory Panel in the United Kingdom.

Halima Shehu, a graduate of English Language from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna State, previously served as the National Coordinator of the Conditional Cash Transfer Programme.

During her tenure in the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development from 2017 to 2022, she leveraged her banking and career expertise to successfully digitalize the program, a feat she regards as her most significant achievement.

A 20-year-old student at UNILORIN tragically took her own life after lending ‘an online acquaintance’ N500,000, according to the university’s administration

0

A 20-year-old student named Sanni Hameedat, who attended the University of Ilorin, tragically took her own life after lending a boy she met on Snapchat the sum of N500,000.

According to a statement from the private hostel management where she lived, Hameedat was undergoing her SIWES program at the time of the incident.

Her death was attributed to the pressure from Snapchat agents demanding quick repayment, combined with her brother’s financial inability, which led to her experiencing depression.

The reason for her suicide can be traced back to financial misappropriation.

She had been entrusted with a significant sum of money by her mother and had developed a friendship with a boy on Snapchat.

This boy claimed that his mother was battling breast cancer and urgently needed N500,000, prompting Hameedat to compassionately lend him half of the N1 million she held for her mother, with the promise of repayment.

However, when her mother needed the money back, the boy abruptly cut off all contact, leaving her distressed.

To make up the missing N500,000, she resorted to borrowing money from various apps.

Hameedat managed to gather N450,000 from loan apps and added her savings of N50,000 to make up the borrowed N500,000.

Unfortunately, she was reported to have ingested a bottle of pesticide known as Sniper the previous night, and her roommate discovered her in distress, foaming from her mouth and vomiting. She was rushed to UITH but was declared dead.

The university officials, including the Dean of the Student Affairs Unit and the Head of Corporate Affairs, were unavailable for comment due to their involvement in the 37th and 38th combined convocation ceremony that started on October 16, 2023.

However, the Student Union President, Ologundudu Adesunkanmi, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation into the matter was underway. It is a devastating loss for the university community.

Airlines expand their seating capacity in order to overcome the challenges posed by soaring operational expenses

As part of their strategies to combat the high operating costs within the aviation industry, domestic airlines have taken measures to increase the number of available flight seats.

This expansion allows for a greater number of travelers to utilize their services, ultimately boosting their revenue.

In an exclusive interview, Susan Akporiaye, the President of the National Association of Nigeria Travel Agencies, acknowledged that this move is a response to challenges such as foreign exchange scarcity.

Airline owners have resorted to these coping mechanisms in order to enhance the capacity of their airlines, especially as revenue has been on the decline.

She further explained that while the newly introduced lower-priced seats may seem like a cost-saving option for passengers, their primary purpose is to increase the average number of seats filled on each flight. This optimization is aimed at reducing the per-seat operating costs.

Despite these efforts, the aviation industry still grapples with persistently high operating costs due to the fluctuating exchange rates. However, the recent change in strategy is notable because airlines have begun releasing more of the lower-priced seats.

Previously, they had limited the availability of cheaper seats, opting to focus on selling the more expensive ones due to financial challenges.

Now, with the exchange rates on the rise, many carriers are releasing these lower-cost seats to generate additional revenue and maintain their presence in the aviation business.

Aviation experts have voiced concerns about the potential adverse effects of the recent airfare increases, which are a result of foreign exchange scarcity and other industry challenges.

While promises have been made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to address sector issues, experts point out that poor implementation of policy regulations is an ongoing hindrance to the industry’s progress.

In the midst of these concerns, Group Capt. John Ojikutu, the Chief Executive Officer of Centurion Security, has called for a comprehensive assessment of the commercial aviation sector by relevant authorities.

Such an examination would help determine the financial health of all airlines operating within the industry.

Dele Momodu clarifies that he did not commit to providing unwavering support to Tinubu, as he communicates with the APC

0

A former presidential aspirant, Dele Momodu, clarified that he never pledged his unwavering support to President Bola Tinubu in exchange for the £500 assistance he received during his exile days.

Momodu asserted that he has reciprocated the President’s kindness manifold, primarily through significant publicity on Ovation platforms valued at thousands of dollars, without divulging all the ways in which he has shown appreciation.

He emphasized that he did not commit to providing unconditional support to Tinubu, addressing misconceptions stemming from various interpretations of his past interview.
