Entrepreneurs brought to court on charges of suspected embezzlement totaling N47.5 million

0

Three individuals, identified as Ime Essien (49), Nnamdi Obianuka (36), and Chidera Stephen (21), who reside in Lagos, found themselves facing charges in an Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Their alleged crime involves the theft of 375 bags of sesame seeds with a total value of N47.5 million.

According to ASP Raji Akeem, the prosecutor in the case, these offenses took place on August 8 at No 9, Warf Road, Apapa, Lagos.

The complainant, Mr. Olubunmi Olumekun, had hired these three men for the task of loading and transporting 375 bags of sesame seeds, weighing 37.5 tonnes and valued at N47.5 million, to various destinations in Lagos and Ogun states.

However, they failed to make the deliveries, and all efforts by Mr. Olumekun to recover his goods proved futile.

The charges against them fall under sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Despite the accusations, the three men entered pleas of not guilty. Chief Magistrate Mrs. Bola Osunsanmi subsequently granted them bail, each with a sum of N3 million and two sureties of equal value. The case has been scheduled for mention on October 23.

Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay secure guaranteed berths in the 2030 World Cup.

0

Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay have secured automatic qualifying spots for the 2030 World Cup as a result of hosting the tournament’s opening games, FIFA confirmed on Thursday.

FIFA, the global governing body of football, had previously announced that Morocco, Portugal, and Spain would jointly host the 2030 World Cup, with the opening matches set to take place in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay in honor of the tournament’s centenary.

In their initial announcement, FIFA had only confirmed automatic qualification for Morocco, Portugal, and Spain.

However, on Thursday, they confirmed that the three South American nations would also be exempt from the qualifying process.

This development means that, in a tournament that has already expanded from 32 to 48 teams for the 2026 finals, “three of the six places” allocated to the South American zone in 2030 will be filled, according to a FIFA spokesman.

Additionally, a South American team will have the opportunity to qualify through a playoff against a team from another continent.

This guaranteed qualification for the 2030 World Cup is particularly significant for Paraguay, which had failed to qualify for the last three World Cup tournaments.

Originally, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Chile were all candidates to host the tournament.

However, they eventually relinquished their hosting bid in exchange for the privilege of hosting the first three matches and celebrating the centenary of the World Cup, which was initially held in Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo, in 1930.

Acting Is An Exclusive Profession, An Avenue To Exhibit My Inherent Potential – Actor Adewale Temitayo

Rank’s Screen Exclusive Interview with fast-rising actor Adewale Temitayo, affectionately known as Smith. He graciously engaged with our correspondent, sharing his remarkable journey, tales of triumph, and the obstacles he has overcome. He is set to Co-Produce is first movie as he shared his thoughts below;

Can you share with us your journey as an actor and how you got started in the industry?

It was in 2017 of July when a friend of mine named Itopa whom we lived in the same compound but now lived in the US called me on the phone on a faithful morning to come to his apartment. I quickly put on my clothes and dashed to his apartment, I met him and his friend Zin who was the director and producer. He introduced me formally to the director/producer and said “This is the guy Smith” because Smith is the pseudonym that I answer to.

The director/producer gave me a brief about the project and he said I was going to take the lead role, I was dumbfounded and said the title of the short movie is “Fragile”. Long story short, we swung into action and I was still in a dumbfounded mood while the set was being arranged.

We shot the short movie, it was a wrap. When the project came out, I watched myself acting and I was grinning while I watched. It was on that day the baton of acting was handed over to me and I’ve guarded the baton with jealousy.

What has been the most challenging role you have played so far, and how did you prepare for it?

Yes, I’ve acted in a challenging role and that was in a project titled “Oath of Service” I acted as a doctor in this project, and it was quite tasking indeed I must confess because I had to learn the usage of different medical verbiage and English construction. Above all, I enjoyed the challenge and the project because I could test myself in a challenging role. Thanks to my director and the producer.

As a fast-rising actor, what do you think sets you apart from others in the industry?

If I may be bold enough to say, every actor is distinctive in one way or another but what I believe sets me apart is my subtle manner of interpreting the role given to me and subjected to learning.

How do you choose the projects you want to be a part of? What criteria do you consider?

The most important thing that attracts me to projects is how educative and informative it is.

Can you tell us about any upcoming projects you are currently working on or planning to work on?

Yes, I’m currently co-producing a project titled Err(Asise), this project is informative, and the viewers will enjoy it. And please endeavour to watch it when it comes out.

What do you enjoy most about acting, and what keeps you motivated in this competitive industry?

Acting is an exclusive profession, it is also an avenue to exhibit my inherent potential and also an avenue for me to give a bit of myself to people and hopefully make them smile, learn, and expose them to new realities about life through acting. Regarding competitiveness in the industry, I don’t believe in competition because it doesn’t exist to me l. I only compliment people and competition is one of the mental sins I distance myself from. If I’m going to compete, that will be with MYSELF.

As a rising star, how do you handle the pressure and expectations that come with your success?

Pressure is essential to the nature of life, I’ve learned to recycle it and use it as fuel to propel me to attain the zenith of the best version of myself.

Are there any actors or directors who have influenced or inspired your work? If so, who are they and why?

Yes, Sir. Ramsay Noah, Sir. Antar Laniyan, Sir. Femi Adebayo, Sir. Odunlade Adekola my Ekiti big brother and Sir. Lateef Adedimeji, Wunmi Toriola, Genevive Nnaji, Kehinde Bankole, Sir. Ninalowo are a few I can mention just to save time, their acting skill is second to none, and I respect them so much.

What advice would you give to aspiring actors who are just starting their journey in the industry?

The journey is not a sprint but a marathon, be humble, make yourself teachable, be time-conscious I.E. learn to get to the location on time and be professional.

Lastly, as you venture into producing your movie, what are your goals and aspirations for this new role? My goal and aspiration for this new role is to showcase my acting skills and professionalism.

Mohbad: The police didn’t extend an invitation to me prior to declaring me wanted, according to Primeboy

0

Afro singer and songwriter, Owodunni Ibrahim, widely recognized as Primeboy, has vehemently denied the assertion that the Lagos State Police Command had invited him prior to declaring him a wanted individual on Tuesday.

Primeboy, a close friend of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, affectionately known as Mohbad, was declared wanted due to alleged non-compliance with a police summons regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of the former Marlian records’ signee.

In an interview with the private television station TVC, conducted just before he voluntarily turned himself in on Wednesday, Primeboy insisted that he had never received any invitation from the police. He explained that, initially, when people began to accuse him of being involved in Mohbad’s death, he had attempted to visit the police station to clear his name.

He stated, “I have never received a message of invitation from the police, that’s a complete falsehood. Prior to the situation of declaring me wanted, I had intended to clarify matters at the station after facing allegations of Mohbad’s death.”

Primeboy went on to reveal that he sought advice from those he reached out to, including his lawyer, who advised him to wait for an official police invitation rather than going to the station to explain himself. Thus, he was taken aback when he discovered that the police had declared him wanted, with a reward of one million Naira for information about his whereabouts.

When questioned about his presence with Mohbad at his last show and whether they had a dispute, Primeboy admitted to having had disagreements with Mohbad but clarified that it stemmed from a misunderstanding he had with his own wife while they were in the car together on the day he attended his Ikorodu performance.

He explained, “Mohbad was attempting to exit the car when a dispute between him and his wife escalated. I intervened, suggesting that it wasn’t safe for him to do so while Zlatan was still performing. He then asked me to step out of the car, which I did. I could sense that he was deeply upset by his reaction that day.”

As Primeboy remains in police custody, he expressed doubts about Mohbad’s wife, implying that she may have played a role in framing him for the late singer’s death on the internet.

Atiku claims that Tinubu owes him a debt of gratitude, asserting that he has never betrayed him

0

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, speaking on Thursday, refuted claims of betraying President Bola Tinubu during their 2007 political alliance.

Instead, he asserted that he stood up against President Olusegun Obasanjo at the time to prevent Lagos State from falling to the political upheaval of 2003.

At a press briefing in Abuja, Atiku, the People’s Democratic Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, emphasized that he defended Lagos from Obasanjo’s influence in 2003.

He firmly denied betraying Tinubu, stating, “So, who is indebted to whom? Is it me or Bola Ahmed Tinubu? I vehemently deny that I stabbed Tinubu in the back.

Atiku also clarified that his political separation from Tinubu occurred when Tinubu wanted to be his running mate in 2007, but Atiku objected to a Muslim-Muslim ticket, which led to their parting ways.

Atiku expresses concern about Tinubu’s academic records, highlighting their potential impact on Nigeria’s reputation

0

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed deep concern about the controversy surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s certificate from Chicago State University, stating that it jeopardizes Nigeria’s reputation.

He called on all stakeholders to uphold democratic principles and uncover the truth about the certificate submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Atiku emphasized that this quest for truth and justice is not about him but about ensuring transparency, morality, justice, and accountability in public affairs.

He called on fellow leaders, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, as well as all Nigerians who care for the country’s well-being, to join in this campaign.

Furthermore, Atiku pledged to pursue his petition before the Supreme Court until a verdict is reached, emphasizing his commitment to the legal process.

Recent developments included the release of President Tinubu’s academic records by Chicago State University, which confirmed his attendance at the institution.

Despite the Presidency’s assertion that the records vindicated the President and did not suggest forgery, Atiku intended to file his application at the Supreme Court, using the documents obtained from the university to support his election appeal against President Tinubu, his opponent in the 2023 presidential election.

Hospitality – Yorùbá laws and customs…

Hospitality – Yorùbá laws and customs…

“The native custom in its purity is that no visitor or stranger on friendly terms must go unentertained with kola nuts and drinkables or food and lodging free. The kola nuts and the drinkables are taken together by the host and the guest.

A man must make his visitor or stranger comfortable by all means in his power. He should raise a loan or obtain goods on credit to do so, if he is not financially strong enough. It is repugnant to native customs to allow a visitor to go unentertained with (at least) kola and water, or to allow a stranger visitor and traveller to prepare or pay for his food. Even a stranger trader or workman should be fed free by the landlord host for at least nine days.

To lodge a stranger for payment under a hiring system is a foreign custom [now adopted by the native]. A man who will not entertain his visitors or stranger in the above manner is believed to be mischievous, is shunned and treated with disrespect by the community.

For a visitor or stranger to refuse or refrain from taking any victuals placed before him (unless a satisfactory reason is given as an excuse) is repugnant in law. Such a visitor or stranger is considered to be a secret enemy and is treated as such. It is also repugnant to native custom for the visitor or the stranger to empty the dishes placed before him. He is taken for a gormandizer or a pauper.

Anything drinkable or eatable set before a visitor or a stranger must first of all be tasted by the host or his representative; or the host is open to prosecution should the visitor or stranger complain of any trouble within 24 hours of taking such food or drink.

Should a stranger who is a lodger or under one’s control is sick, the landlord (the host) shall report at once to the authorities as well as to the relatives or any one who is well-known to or who is a native of the stranger’s country or tribe; he may also ask the stranger to quit. Should he fail to take any of these courses he is liable for prosecution if the stranger dies. He may be held up for murder or manslaughter.

On the death of a stranger lodger all his personal effects shall be delivered to the authorities, who deliver them to the deceased’s relatives. Or in case of doubt or dispute as regards the eligibility of the claimant the authorities have the right to hold over such goods till the identity of the relative is proved.

In no circumstances whatever shall the landlord hide of keep back any portion of the property of the deceased strange. Should he do so and should he be detected he is liable to a heavy fine with the immediate refund of the portion misappropriated. He may be kept under restraint pending the recovery of the goods.

It is repugnant to native customs to give presents in odd quantity. Only even numbers are appreciated. For instance: A present of two kola nuts is more appreciated than that of three. To give one quantity as a present is a mark of dishonour to the person to whom the present is made. It is only in the worship of Ẹlẹgbara that an odd quantity is permissible.”

Mohbad was not just my son; he was a cherished companion- MohBad’s Father

0

“Mohbad was not just my son; he was a cherished companion, akin to a brother. Every decision I made in life was driven by my desire to secure a bright future for him and provide support for his siblings. It was a heart-wrenching moment when his stepmother presented me with an ultimatum, forcing me to choose between my son and herself. Without hesitation, I chose my son, as I yearned for him to thrive and succeed in life. Regrettably, this choice led to the dissolution of my marriage.”

Allow me to delve into the intricacies of our relationship. Mohbad and I shared an unbreakable bond, akin to that of siblings. From our early years, we were inseparable, embarking on countless adventures together. During my days as a singer, I imparted my musical knowledge to him, fostering a shared passion for the craft. When his mother departed from our lives, we found solace in carpentry work, pooling our resources to ensure the well-being of Mohbad and his siblings.

When the time came for Mohbad to pursue higher education, I made a profound sacrifice. I liquidated all my possessions, providing him with the necessary funds to attend university. Little did I know that this selfless act would pave the way for his eventual association with Marlian Music. Mohbad possessed a unique contentment with his circumstances, always appreciating what he had. He found inspiration in those who had achieved greater success, eagerly listening to their stories and experiences.

It is with a heavy heart that I recount the events that led to the dissolution of my marriage. The choice I made to prioritize my son’s well-being ultimately drove a wedge between my ex-wife and me. Despite the pain and loss, I remain steadfast in my belief that I made the right decision, as I wanted nothing more than to witness Mohbad’s triumphs and accomplishments in life.

Saudi Arabia has made an official announcement of its bid to become the host nation for the 2034 World Cup

0

Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday, revealed its intention to bid for the 2034 World Cup, marking another stride in its quest to establish itself as a prominent global sports player.

The bid aims to create a top-tier tournament, drawing inspiration from Saudi Arabia’s ongoing socioeconomic transformation and its deep-rooted passion for football, according to a statement from the Saudi Arabian football federation.

This announcement comes a year after neighboring Qatar successfully hosted the first-ever World Cup in the Middle East, during which the Saudi national team achieved a remarkable victory over eventual champions Argentina in the group stage.

Notably, Saudi Arabia’s bid came shortly after FIFA, the world football governing body, outlined its plans for the 2030 World Cup and invited countries in the Asian Football Confederation to consider hosting the 2034 edition.

In the wake of Qatar’s tournament, Saudi Arabia made headlines by signing Cristiano Ronaldo to play in the Saudi Pro League, initiating a trend of attracting top-tier athletes with lucrative salaries to the world’s leading crude oil exporter.

Sports form an integral part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030 reform agenda, aimed at transforming Saudi Arabia into a tourism and business hub while diversifying its economy away from fossil fuels.

In the coming weeks, Saudi Arabia is set to host various major sporting events, including the final LIV Golf League tournament, a boxing match featuring Anthony Joshua, and the Next Gen ATP Finals tennis tournament. Additionally, it will host the FIFA Club World Cup in December.

Earlier this year, Saudi Arabia was confirmed as the host of the 2027 Asian Cup, providing an opportunity to enhance its football infrastructure, including the construction of “world-class stadiums” in sustainable ways, as stated by Saudi Football Federation President Yasser Al Misehal.

Previously, Saudi Arabia explored a joint World Cup bid with Egypt and Greece, but this idea has been set aside.

The new Saudi-only bid promises fans a maximum three-hour flight between cities and stadiums, ensuring convenience.

Critics have accused Riyadh of “sportswashing,” using sports to divert attention from human rights concerns.

In a recent interview, Prince Mohammed defended this approach, emphasizing its potential economic benefits.

Hosting the World Cup would also intensify scrutiny of Prince Mohammed, who has faced criticism for consolidating power through a crackdown on dissent and human rights abuses.

However, he expressed remorse over certain cases.

World Cup-related construction may also raise environmental concerns, as witnessed when Saudi Arabia was awarded hosting rights for the 2029 Asian Winter Games.

The planned futuristic megacity known as NEOM drew attention for its ambitious projects.

Despite these challenges, Saudi Arabia aims to utilize the World Cup as a platform to showcase its natural attractions and dispel the perception of being solely a desert nation.

This includes highlighting mountains, islands, and cultural experiences, all supported by state-of-the-art facilities.

The Asian Football Confederation expressed its support for Saudi Arabia’s bid, with AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa affirming unity and cooperation with the global football community to ensure the bid’s success.

FIFA is planning to host the 2030 World Cup on a global scale, spanning three continents and involving six different countries

0

FIFA, the global governing body for soccer, has officially announced its plan to host the 2030 World Cup, spanning six countries across three different continents.

In a statement released on Wednesday via its website, FIFA revealed that Spain, Portugal, and Morocco will jointly host this historic tournament, with the initial three matches scheduled to take place in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay.

This upcoming World Cup will mark a significant milestone as it will feature 48 teams and will be the first ever to be held on multiple continents.

Furthermore, all host nations will receive automatic qualification for the event.

In commemoration of a century of global soccer, FIFA aims to kick off the tournament at Uruguay’s Estádio Centenário, the same venue where the inaugural 1930 World Cup was held, and which saw Uruguay emerge victorious with a 4-2 victory over Argentina.

In their official statement, FIFA expressed, “In 2030, the FIFA World Cup will bring together six countries across three continents, inviting the entire world to partake in celebrating the beautiful game, the centenary of the World Cup, and the sport itself.”

“The FIFA Council has unanimously endorsed the exclusive candidacy of Morocco, Portugal, and Spain to host the 2030 event, with their automatic qualification contingent upon the successful completion of FIFA’s bidding process and the decision of the FIFA Congress in 2024.”

Additionally, recognizing the historical significance of the first-ever FIFA World Cup, the FIFA Council has also unanimously decided to organize a special centenary celebration ceremony in Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital, where the inaugural World Cup unfolded in 1930.

Additionally, three World Cup matches are planned for Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay.

It’s noteworthy that the 2026 World Cup is set to be hosted in three North American countries: Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America.
