An undergraduate of the University of Lagos, identified simply as Adekunle, was on Saturday shot dead by armed robbers at Harvey Road, Moore Road Junction, in the Yaba area of the state.

Adekunle and his school mate identified simply as Opeyemi boarded a shuttle bus from Yaba to UNILAG and while in the vehicle, a man, who was hanging at the back of the bus, dispossessed Opeyemi of her iPhone 7 plus.

Pained by the development, Opeyemi raised the alarm and Adekunle, in a desperate attempt to retrieve the phone from the robber who jumped down from the bus and fled, pursued him.

Realising that Adekunle was closing in on the suspect, it was learnt that one of the hoodlums suspected to be working with the fleeing suspect appeared from nowhere and shot the 23-year-old.

Speaking with our correspondent on Monday, an eyewitness who does not want his name mentioned for security reasons, said the robber’s accomplice shot Adekunle in the head, adding that the undergraduate died on the spot.

He said, “The incident happened on June 3 around 9pm. What happened was that someone shot the deceased at a close range on the left side of his head and he died on the spot. An ATM card found on him bears the name Adekunle.

“Later on, we gathered from a girl that gave her name as Opeyemi, who claimed to be a student of Business Administration, UNILAG, that she and the deceased, whom she knew as a student of UNILAG, boarded a shuttle bus from Yaba and were heading to UNILAG when she got dispossessed of her iPhone 7 Plus by a thief hanging at the back of the bus

She said the deceased attempted to help by pursuing the robber but in the process, another group of persons came out and one of them shot him at a close range on the left side of his head and he died on the spot.”

In a picture in possession of our correspondent, Adekunle, who wore a black top and trousers, was seen lying motionless on the floor of the crime scene.

Our correspondent gathered that policemen, who arrived at the scene later, evacuated Adekunle’s corpse and deposited it at the morgue of the Mainland Hospital.

Contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the command had commenced an investigation to track down the suspects behind the attack.

“The deceased was a UNILAG student. The suspects are being trailed for possible arrest and the command has contacted the victim’s relatives. The case has been transferred to the SCID, Panti, for discreet investigation,” he said.

When contacted, the spokesperson for UNILAG, Adejoke Alaga-Ibrahim, declined to comment on the development.

“I do not give reactions over the phone; I will like you to make a formal request; you could send an email to the communicationunit@unilag.edu.ng, or you could come over to the university so that you can speak with the Dean of Students Affairs,” she said.

Health workers responded to Tinubu’s plea, calling off the strike

The President, Bola Tinubu, on Monday, urged striking health union workers to return to work, promising to resolve their grievances.

“We will resolve all the issues. Please go back to work,” Tinubu told the leadership of the Joint Health Sector Unions during a meeting at the State House, Abuja.

State House Director of Information, Abiodun Oladunjoye, revealed this in a statement he signed on Monday titled, ‘President Tinubu restates commitment to reviving health sector.’

The JOHESU had embarked on an indefinite strike a week ago over demands for improved welfare, amongst other reasons.

Tinubu, who stated his administration’s commitment to revive and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s health sector, harped on the importance of the sector and its professionals.

The health sector is one sector with a commitment to humanity. We will resolve all the problems.

Trust must be enshrined in all discussions. I promise you, we will accelerate this.

We will resolve all the issues. Please go back to work,” the President said.

In response, the acting Chairman, JOHESU, Dr Obinna Ogbonna, according to the statement, expressed the readiness of the union to get its members back to work, but urged the President  to pay attention to the healthcare delivery system in Nigeria through adequate investment in  infrastructure and better welfare for workers in the sector to stop brain drain.

Mr President, now that we have assurance from the top, we are encouraged to go back and talk to our members with a view to going back to work,” said Ogbonna.

A member of the executive council of the union, Mr Olumide Akintayo, who accompanied the acting chairman to the meeting, also urged the Federal Government to always respond to Labour issues and nip them in the bud before they become full-blown industrial crises.

Pastor to die by hanging for killing choir mistress, others

0

A High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has sentenced a pastor, Chidiebere Okoroafor, to death by hanging for murder.

Okoroafor, who is the General Overseer of the Altar of Solution and Healing Assembly based in Oyigbo, Rivers State was tried for killing his choir mistress, Orlunma Nwagba, who he allegedly impregnated.

He also faced murder charges for the killing of Nwagba’s friend, Chigozie Ezenwa, and her eleven-month-old daughter, Cresabel, on December 11, 2017, in the Oyigbo Local Government Area of the state.

The trial judge, S.O. Benson, said the evidence and confessional statements from the pastor showed that he committed the crimes.

Justice Benson said the prosecution proved the case of murder against the cleric and ordered that he should be killed by hanging him by the neck until he is dead or should be injected with a lethal injection which also kills faster.

Our correspondent reports that the women had visited the pastor’s house in Oyigbo for a discussion on the said pregnancy when he tricked them into a bush and allegedly committed the act in two different locations.

Men of the Rivers State Police Command had on December 17, 2017, arrested Okoroafor following an alarm raised by Ezenwa’s husband over the killing of the three persons.

Speaking to journalists outside the courtroom, the prosecution counsel from the state Ministry of Justice, Precious Ordu, expressed happiness over the judgment.

While noting that the prosecution received several threats in the course of the trial, Ordu expressed delight that justice has prevailed

Justice has been served to the state, the complainant and the convict.

“This will serve as a deterrent to all those who intend to commit the same offence because it is justice for all,” he said.

On his part, counsel for the defendant, Innocent Ekwu, said he and his team would appeal the judgment.

“We, as counsel for the defendant, have decided to appeal the case. We are going to file our notice of appeal as quickly as possible because we have grounds on which we believe that the defendant did not commit the offence,” he said.

Tinubu warns the security services of disharmony and intelligence hoarding

0

The President, Bola Tinubu, on Monday in Abuja, warned security agencies against disharmony and intelligence hoarding; these practices, he said, frustrate Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts.

“You can’t have disharmony in an orchestra. We must focus on one tunnel…share information, share intelligence. You cannot hoard information. You cannot hoard intelligence,” Tinubu said when he toured the new Office of National Security Adviser and facilities at the National Counter Terrorism Centre, Abuja.

The Director of Information, State House, Abiodun Oladunjoye, disclosed this in a statement he signed on Monday titled ‘At new ONSA building, President Tinubu tasks security, intelligence agencies on sharing into to counter-terrorism.’

The warning comes four days after Tinubu told Service Chiefs at the General Security Appraisal Committee meeting that he would not tolerate them working at “cross purposes.”

The President had also directed them to crush oil theft as it stymies Nigeria’s oil output, even as the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries has agreed to allow Nigeria, Congo, and Angola to continue to produce maximally to their OPEC quota of 2023.

This time, however, Tinubu called for harmonised efforts, saying, “The effort of the entire armed forces of this country must be put together in a way that there will be one single focus on securing the country.

“You can’t have disharmony in an orchestra. We must focus on one tunnel; coordinate, share information, share intelligence, and work harder.

You cannot hoard information. You cannot hoard intelligence. I am glad that Nigeria is on the path to success. We will, I assure you. We will make it a priority and that is why I am here this morning.”

While noting the efforts demonstrated in countering terrorism and the state-of-the-art facilities at the two facilities, President Tinubu highlighted the importance of backing such efforts with knowledge.

He said his administration had recognised that to achieve economic revival, prosperity, and development, security should be of optimum priority.

“Terrorism is not unique to Nigeria alone. It is across the world and we have to fight it. We have to eliminate it. If we as Nigerians are looking for economic revival, prosperity, and development, then we have to give priority to security.

“What I have seen here is a demonstration of intelligence efforts to counter-terrorism. This must be backed by knowledge.

Counter-terrorism that is not backed by knowledge and intelligence is not going to be of any service to any nation. We are going to work on that together,” he said.

President Tinubu, who described the tour of facilities at the new ONSA building as crucial, expressed his willingness to do whatever was necessary to support the nation’s security architecture.

In his remarks, the NSA, Major-General Babagana Monguno (retd.), thanked the President for visiting, his first engagement outside the Villa, saying that “it reinforces his commitment, dedication and inflexible rigidity to ensuring that the security misfortunes of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and by extension, the sub-region are overcome within the shortest possible time.”

Monguno pledged the total commitment and dedication of ONSA to ensure that President Tinubu realises the promises he made to the Nigerian people on security
