32 victims of Thursday’s unfortunate Train-Bus accident which occurred at the PWD – Shogunle axis of Ikeja in Lagos State have been discharged from three State public health facilities after quality medical care and management, the State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi has said.

Speaking on Friday at a news briefing to give an update and situation report of the incident, Abayomi explained that 19 of the 102 accident victims were discharged from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), five from Accident and Emergency Centre at the Toll Gate and eight from the Orile-Agege General Hospital.

He disclosed that LASUTH received additional 17 victims of the accident after the initial 85 that were recorded, bringing the total number of injured persons associated with the misfortune to 102. Abayomi noted that the fatality figure remained at six with no other death recorded from 12.00 noon Thursday till 12:00 noon when the update briefing was held.

The Commissioner adduce the low casualty figure recorded to the effective triage strategy that was put in place and carried out first by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) and secondly by the management of LASUTH.

He revealed that he has also visited patients transferred to other government hospitals from LASUTH, stressing that all patients are stable and responding well to management. He noted that severe complications are unlikely as the patients have been settled into their respective wards.

Abayomi stated further that 40 units of blood were transfused to stabilise patients who require a blood transfusion, adding that the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service (LSBTS) was able to collect 256 units of blood from voluntary donors who heeded the call for blood donation for victims of the accident.

The Commissioner, while noting that the well-coordinated responses of appropriate agencies of government have resulted in commendable efforts which ought to be applauded, thanked all those involved in the life-saving act, which he said, has once again shown the resolve and resilient spirit of Lagos State and its people.

Also speaking, the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola acknowledged that the Lagos State Staff Bus involved in the accident was full to the acceptable capacity because staff opted for the bus which is free of charge as opposed to plying commercial transportation because of the present cash crunch situation in the country.

Muri-Okunola noted that the driver of the bus is still in police custody assisting with the investigation with regard to the cause of the accident. He informed that the medical and mental state of the driver while driving has also been taken into consideration, noting that the result will form part of the investigative report.

Census Concerns: Diving into the NPRs #400 Billion Funding Allocation

0

Nigeria, a country with a population estimated to be around 216 million by the UN population agency, UNFPA, lacks accurate data for its citizens. Filling out official forms is a tedious task as citizens are required to provide the same information repeatedly on various platforms.

While some suggest using the Bank Verification Number (BVN) as a means of data sampling for all citizens, the number of BVNs in Nigeria is only 56.8 million, leaving a significant portion of the population unaccounted for.

Recently, an NPC official revealed that over N400 billion has been earmarked for the 2023 census, with N100 billion already spent on preparations. The census is a capital-intensive exercise, and some of the funds will go towards empowering 1.5 million Nigerians with payments ranging from N100,000 to N150,000 per person.

To enhance the movement of personnel and materials, the FG plans to acquire 56,000 vehicles, and 800,000 Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) will be procured. The National Population Commission (NPC) has also signed a landmark deal with Nigeria’s leading integrated technology brand, Zinox, for the supply of tech components and other accessories for the 2023 national census project. The contract, worth over N85bn, was recently awarded to Zinox after ratification by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

Despite the significant budget allocation for the census exercise, many social media users have criticized it without fully understanding its purpose or asking important questions about public monitoring and accountability. It is crucial for Nigerians to be aware of the operations of public accountability and not just focus on voting and supporting a particular candidate. Social advocates and influencers should do more to raise important issues and hold leaders accountable.

Beautiful Nubia: Poet and musical icon

0

Music has registered itself as one of the most wondrous phenomena in the world for centuries now — from the Hurrian Hymn No. 6, which some civilizations consider humans’ first song, to the newer renditions of Burna Boy and other Afrobeats musicians — there is no denying that music has been around for as long as human societies have existed, and even if music in centuries past is not as organised as contemporary music, the fact remains that it serves the multi-functional purposes in today’s society.

The vitality of music to human societies owes to several reasons, chief of which is how potently it helps humans stay healthy and happy.

This wonder is further solidified by how music transcends language barriers.

Thus, a Hausa woman could fall in love with Italian music and, in the same breath, sing along to the song she’s listening to, although she has little to no proficiency in Italian.

People have often demonstrated that they can sing beautifully and amazingly in a language they don’t speak or are not skilled in.

It is, therefore, not shocking that Nigerian artists who sing in a mix of their indigenous language and English continue to command global attention and trends.

The multi-functionality of music comes into play in different ways in human society — for some, it is an escape route that opens up into happiness, no matter how fleeting it might be, and this is where calm and melancholic songs often come to bear in many people’s day-to-day activities.

For some others, it is a means to vent, protest, and speak up against the status quo — giving rise to reggae, jazz, Afrobeat, and other activist genres.

Yet, others find music as a form of entertainment. In most cases, the roles that music plays in people’s lives are not mutually exclusive and can co-exist and even complement each other.

Musicians vary according to the genre they sing, their fanbase, alignment, ideologies, and brand. Dr Olusegun Akinlolu — known to many by his stage name, Beautiful Nubia — is a prime example of a musician for whom music transcends a career choice or a means to an end.

Closely studying Beautiful Nubia’s philosophies, beliefs, lyrics, band formation, musical arrangement, melody, brand, and stage name will prove that music is central to his life. First is the strategic choice of a stage name.

Historical details portray Nubia as a prosperous, beautiful, and wealthy African state that has relations with the civilisations in Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia. It is also credited as one of the cradles of civilisation and state formation as we know it today.

When viewed through the lens of the songs in Beautiful Nubia’s discography and digging deeply into historical details in the choice of a stage name, choosing this particular name shows an intentional move to define an Afro-centric brand.

Furthermore, Beautiful Nubia’s genre and band formation reflect deep-seated intentionality.

Born into and growing up in a developing Ibadan city, his exposure to the rich culture of the Ibadan Yoruba people massively contributed to his language acquisition, so much so that his Yoruba language repertoire is replete with solid and deep idioms, proverbs, and aphorisms.

Choosing to sing folksongs in Yoruba means being willing to learn the intricacies of deploying literary devices in the Yoruba language without losing sight of the importance of rhythm and melody.

This is an undertaking that surpasses mere language literacy or grammatical correctness.

It borders on richness and language mastery that even some native speakers might not be able to attain.

1968 Ibadan, a vastly growing post-independent city that doubled as the capital of the new Western state, witnessed the birth of Olusegun Akinlolu.

His earliest sojourn pointed him toward a career as a veterinary doctor, for which he studied at the University of Ibadan between 1987 and 1992.

Passionate as he might have been about the veterinary practice, destiny had something grander and more legacy-defining for the Ibadan man, and in less than a decade of practising as a veterinarian, Akinlolu switched to music.

This formal switch led to him founding EniObanke, his music company, in 1997, the same year he released his first and most iconic album, Seven Lives, which was his authoritative entry into the music world.

Through this album, he established that Afro-themedfolksongs can be captivating and powerful, even if written in English; that lyrical depth will be one of the bedrocks of his career; and that he is focused on singing for and about Africa.

In addition, he quickly registered relatability among both old and young. The main track, “Seven Lives,” which the album is named after, deftly swings between criticism of what the continent has become and an undeniable pride in its development.

Despite the seeming desolation and gross underdevelopment plaguing several African countries, this is the reality for many Africans who are proud of their connection with the continent and proudly wear their identity.

Beautiful Nubia’s deft use of imagery and the instrumental arrangements in the song also lay strong claims to its eventual relatability, helping it to the ranks of Nigeria’s evergreen songs.

Beautiful Nubia is a songwriter and musician who has proven that he understands what it takes to make evergreen music, and such qualities include the ability to make his songsrelatable to both old and young listeners, easy-to-remember lyrics, melodious tunes, and the songs’ replay value, which is what make the songs new and appreciable every time they are played.

These are the qualities that songs such as “Seven Lives”, “Jangbalajugbu”, “Kilokilo”, and “Owuro Lojo”, among others, possess.

A strategic band leader, Beautiful Nubia has been the vanguard of his Roots Renaissance Band, through which he has propagated his messages.

He is also well-known for addressing African issues, cultivating a loyal brand of listeners that cut across several ages and genders.

Beyond producing songs, Beautiful Nubia spreads a message of hope and reinforces the beauty of Africa and its varied cultures.

To that end, Roots Renaissance Band has held the EniObanke Music Festival in several cities in Nigeria for over a decade now — a series of events through which he and his band have helped Nigerians and Africans reconnect with their roots and Africanness through music that speaks to the soul.

Beautiful Nubia does not pander to mainstream or popular ideals, and the quality of his output is so overwhelming.

His approach to producing, releasing, and promoting his music reflects exclusivity and luxury.

To encounter his songs is to fall in love with them, and to love the songs is to stay loyal to the brand.

His minimalist lifestyle affects how he approaches the distribution and marketing of his music and books, as well as the promotion of his music festivals.

With his Roots Renaissance Band, he has an amazing output level of about 30 albums, including acoustic and instrumentals-based albums, and live and poetry performances.

The multi-talented band leader is also an established poet and author who has written several books across different genres.

As an enigmatic music composer and band leader, Beautiful Nubia has proven that his choice of career is more of a lifestyle and reflection of his philosophical beliefs.

In promoting and propagating African-themed music, Beautiful Nubia, who deftly shifts between deep-founded lyrics in his indigenous Yoruba and fluently stringed-together English verses, has won a loyal group of listeners and fans. For his latest music:

Please join us for a conversation with renowned Nigerian songwriter, music composer, and band leader, Olusegun Akinlolu (Beautiful Nubia) on the next edition of The Toyin Falola Interviews:

Acting cannot be tied to gender- Sisanmi Eureka Schuller

0

Filmmaker and art curator, Sisanmi Eureka Schuller, is passionate about promoting the art in the diaspora. Currently bringing innovation to the community where she resides in Austria, Sisanmi looks forward to a collaborative effort between Nollywood Nigeria and Nollywood Austria. She speaks with SEGUN ADEBAYO about her plans for Nollywood and arts.

Let’s talk about your coming show in July. What is it all about?

Spectacular Summer Gyration is an event created by a team of people with passion for cultural promotion and mutual understanding among peoples of different worldviews. The event is geared towards promoting cultural diversity as an integral part of Lisbon identity and also to promote sustainable relationships between people of different cultures, creeds, nationalities, languages, and backgrounds. Thus this is one the reason I am bent on uplifting the art culture here in the Diaspora.

How will you describe the face of art in the Diaspora?

The face of art in the Diaspora is encouraging in that both indigenes and foreigners appreciate good art and are constantly in search of new artworks. I should say it is the future of art works.

You are involved in so many activities; which do you find more pleasant doing and why?

I find acting and performing art fascinating. Its versatility strengthens my creative mindset and it keeps me inquisitive of the next step, the more reason I take time to study new concepts to ensure a great legacy in the future. I find cultural promotion like music, dance and fashion very pleasant and the reason is because I like getting to meet and know about people of many cultural backgrounds so as to promote understanding among people.
What is the acceptance level of Nollywood production in Austria?

It is a new phenomenon in Austria. However, since the beginning of Austrian brand of Nollywood, it is well accepted especially among the African communities. Nollywood production in Austria is fast rising.

What collaborative effect is being made to fuse indigenous languages in your production?

Strong efforts are being taken to include Austrian citizens, especially the youth, who are veritable source for upcoming talents. It’s been a positive collaboration, infusing indigenous languages in my productions. The experience is amazing. It turned out well to my greatest surprise because Austrians are 100 per cent ready to explore other languages and that we have been able to do in past productions and fusing more this year

Well it is the fear and help of God that has been seeing me through according to Psalm 121. My driving force is to be a model for encouragement to women who for one reason or the others have believed that acting is not meant for women and that acting is for only women of easy virtues. For me, I find happiness representing the art; I am a strong advocate that art should not be gender sensitive.

What was growing up like?

Growing up was like the great Invitation to me. Being brought up by my mother, as a single parent, with two of my siblings, it is still a pain for me not having a fatherly love. It did affect me growing up and also manifest in my inability to get into a relationship earlier enough. When I finally did, it was difficult for me to reciprocate the love. This is more reason I am independent and working hard to be a great mom (wife) some day.  It is unimaginable to have a father that is well to do, alive and enjoys helping outsiders, but won’t support his wife and biological children. For instance, it is very embarrassing when employers wonder why we the children look for job immediately they heard the name of my father because they expect my dad to be able to provide everything we might need due to his position in the society.

With all that you do in the Diaspora at the moment, did you foresee this while growing up?

Yes I’ve always wanted to be a media personality as a child. I remember always acting in the children’s departments then and later with teenagers department. It is a dream come true today because I never allowed my background to bring me down at any point in life, I strive to be a better person always.

Is Nollywood Austria open to collaboration with the Nigerian movie industry?

Sure Nollywood Austria is very much open for collaboration with Nollywood Nigeria of entertainment Industry. In fact there was supposed to be collaboration some years back but due to the outbreak of coronavirus in 2020, we had to postpone it. We are a growing community open to new ideas and innovation that project our little effort to a diverse audience.

Back to music, back to social media, Davido’s fans begged

0

Pop star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, is one entertainer who has passionate and loyal supporters across the globe.

By virtue of his engaging and charismatic personality, he also has a vibrant social media presence.

When he lost his only son, Ifeanyi, on October 31, 2022, it evoked grief from millions of people, who sent an avalanche of well wishes to him and the boy’s mother, Chioma.

However, since that sad incident, the If singer has taken a break from social media.

He only made a brief return on December 18 and 19, 2022, before and after his spectacular performance at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. Together with two other artistes— Trinidad Cardona (USA) and Aisha (Qatar)— they had recorded the football tournament’s theme song, Hayya Hayya (Better Together).

He first posted a picture of him getting ready for the show, while Chioma adjusted his clothing. The picture was ‘liked’ by a record 2,032,394 people. The next day, he posted pictures of him on stage with other artistes. Those pictures attracted 1,383,551 likes.

However, that has not been able to assuage the thirst of his fans; many of who have been imploring him to return to social media, and release new music.

Recently, some of the singer’s fans took to the streets of Lagos to stage a ‘protest’, over his absence from the music scene and social media.

Another fan draped in a white cloth also went on the street, carrying what looked like a sacrifice in a bid to hasten the singer’s return to the entertainment scene.

The calls for his return have intensified because the singer had earlier stated that he would return to the public space in March (this month).

Sometime ago, the singer’s logistics manager, Isreal DMW, had hinted in a now-deleted post that the former would soon release a new album.

Some weeks back, Davido was also in the news when he gifted a commercial tricycle driver N1m, when a video of the latter’s tricycle bearing different pictures of the Dami Duro crooner surfaced online.

Providing comic relief, a skit maker, OGB Recent, also posted a video of him driving a tricycle that was splashed with Davido’s pictures.

South African artiste Costa Titch slumps, dies on stage

0

Popular South African artiste, Costa Tsobanoglou, professionally known as Costa Titch, has passed on.

The ‘Big Flexa’ rapper reportedly died while thrilling fans at the Ultra Music Festival held in Johannesburg on Saturday.

In videos making rounds on the internet, the singer fell down during the performance, but continued singing after he was picked up by his bodyguard. He however slumped a second time and had to be carried off stage.

South African media personality, Phil Mphela,  confirmed the news via Twitter late night  on Saturday.

Mphela wrote in his tweet, “RIP: Costa Titch. Nelspruit-born artist and dancer, real name Costa Tsobanoglou, has passed away.  He was 27.”

Titch was popular for his contribution to Amapiano genre with hits such as ‘Big Flexa’, ‘Nkalakatha’ and ‘Activate’.

The rising star most recently signed a deal with Akon’s record label, Konvict Kulture.
Costa’s death is another huge loss for the South African music industry after his colleague, Kiernan Forbes alias AKA, was shot dead in February.
