Government Issues Traffic Advisory as Third Mainland Bridge Prepares for Closure Due to Repairs

Date:

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has announced the closure of the Third Mainland Bridge to facilitate essential repairs on deteriorated sections of the structure.

These repairs, conducted in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works and managed by the Lagos Public Works Corporation, will necessitate the bridge’s closure on two consecutive Sundays, September 17 and 24, from 7.00 am to 7.00 pm each day.

To ensure a smooth flow of traffic during this maintenance period, Abdulhafiz Toriola, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, confirmed that traffic diversions will be in place to expedite the repair process.

The rehabilitation work will occur in two distinct phases, with the first phase concentrating on critical sections along the Iyana-Oworonsoki route leading to Adeniji Adele/Lagos Island.

A travel advisory has been issued to guide motorists.

Traffic from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Alapere/Ogudu axis, heading towards Lagos Island, will be rerouted towards the Gbagada-Oshodi Expressway, providing access to Ikorodu Road/Funsho Williams Avenue, Eko Bridge, and Lagos Island.

For those traveling from Lagos Mainland through Herbert Macaulay Road (Adekunle axis) toward Lagos Island via the Third Mainland Bridge, they will be redirected to Murtala Muhammed Way, enabling them to use Carter Bridge to reach Lagos Island.

Motorists are urged to exercise patience and adhere to safety measures during the asphalt pavement repairs on the bridge.

To ensure efficient traffic management, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police, and other traffic personnel will be present to control and oversee traffic conditions.

Toriola emphasized, “We assure that despite the traffic impact on the alternative routes, LASTMA will be deployed to minimize inconveniences and ease movement along the affected corridors.

Various traffic agencies will collaborate with security and safety personnel to implement effective traffic management measures, enhancing safety, traffic flow, and capacity utilization throughout the repair period.
