On the night of 26 September 2026, Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos became more than a venue. It became the site of the largest attendance at a film screening in a single location in history.
More than 51,000 people gathered for Black Market, smashing the previous Guinness World Record of 43,624, which had stood since 2015. Guinness World Records confirmed 51,000 qualifying attendees for the new record.
This was not a regular premiere. It was a statement.
Produced by Nora Awolowo, with Nicole Ofoegbu among the production team and Omowunmi Dada serving as executive co-producer and star, Black Market brought together Rixel Studios, FilmOne Studios, Signet Ring Studios and other collaborators for an ambitious cinematic event. The film was directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay.
And the scale matched the ambition.
They targeted 50,000.
More than 51,000 showed up.
And a world record was made.
The achievement becomes another major moment for Nigerian cinema — not simply because of the number, but because a Nigerian film brought tens of thousands of people together, in one location, for one shared cinematic experience.
For Nora Awolowo and the entire Black Market team, what began as an audacious idea became history.
