Festival draws official backing from the Oyo State Ministry of Culture and Tourism ahead of its inaugural edition at Lead City University

A new cultural festival rooted in Yoruba history and identity is set to make its debut in Ibadan next month. The Itansan Art Fest 2026, holding on May 22 at Adeline Hall, Lead City University, will gather artists, students, cultural practitioners, and members of the public under the theme “Beacon of the Ancestors,” for a day of performance, exhibition, literary presentation, and inter-school competition.
The festival takes its name from the Yoruba word for rays of light. That etymology is not incidental. It speaks to the organising philosophy behind Itansan: that culture, like light, must be transmitted across generations to remain alive. Where many events in the Nigerian creative calendar draw primarily from contemporary expression, Itansan is built around the argument that indigenous knowledge and ancestral identity deserve a dedicated public stage.
Adekunle E. Adewunmi, Executive Director of the festival, has been direct about that intent. “Our mission with Itansan is to create a platform that helps young people understand who we are and where we come from,” he said. “By engaging our youth through art and cultural experiences, we are contributing to the preservation and continuity of our heritage.” That commitment to youth sits at the centre of the festival’s programme design.
A Programme Built Around Participation and Documentation
The flagship activity for young attendees is an Inter-School Cultural and Art Competition, which gives secondary school students a formal arena to interpret and express Yoruba heritage through writing, visual art, and performance. Competitions of this kind are often the first place where young talent receives sustained institutional attention, and the Itansan edition is designed to carry genuine weight, not merely to perform the idea of cultural investment.
The literary dimension of the festival will be marked by the official launch of “Emissaries of the Gods” (Iko Orisa), a work that documents ancestral narratives in a culture where much of that knowledge has historically been transmitted orally. The book launch is positioned as one of the headline moments of the day and will give authors and scholars a public platform to discuss the urgency of written documentation in preserving what living memory alone cannot guarantee.
Theatrical performance returns Itansan to its most visceral form of cultural transmission. A full-scale stage play will be mounted during the festival, accompanied by a cultural fashion showcase that places indigenous aesthetics alongside dramatic storytelling. The combination of costume, movement, and narrative is in many ways the oldest form of cultural education, and it will be one of the dominant sensory experiences of the day.
Additional live acts, including music and spoken word, will round out the performance programme. A trade fair running concurrently will create space for vendors working in fashion, food, visual art, and craft to operate within the festival’s cultural frame, connecting economic activity with community expression in a way that neither subordinates one to the other.
Institutional Backing and Momentum
The festival carries an official endorsement from the Oyo State Ministry of Tourism and Culture, a recognition that places Itansan within the state government’s broader framework for heritage promotion and the development of the creative economy. The endorsement is likely to shape the calibre of attendance, with ministry officials, traditional rulers, and cultural leaders expected to be present alongside the general public.
Momentum behind the event has been building since a Pre-Event and Launch held on March 22, 2026, which brought together members of the press, social media influencers, and key stakeholders for an early look at what the May festival will offer. The response to that session provided the organising team with both coverage and a clearer picture of public anticipation.
