THE ARCHITECT OF KNOWLEDGE: Amb. Mfon Ekpo and the Making ofAfrica’s First Global Knowledge Centre

There is a particular kind of person who treats a courtroom, a lecture hall, and a stage as the same room. Amb. Mfon Ekpo has spent more than two decades proving that the boundaries between law, leadership, and learning are far more porous than most people assume. A Maritime and Aviation Lawyer by training, she has built a career that refuses to sit still inside any single discipline, and in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, that refusal is about to take permanent, physical form.

A Career Built on Many Foundations

Ekpo’s professional identity rests on an unusual breadth of credentials. She holds degrees spanning Maritime Law, Business Law, Journalism, Neuro-linguistic Programming, Project Management, and Negotiation, a combination that reads less like a resume and more like a deliberate architecture for understanding how people think, decide, and act. That architecture now underpins everything she has built.

She serves as CEO of The Discovery Centre, a training and development organization, and as founding partner and Executive Director of the Maxwell Leadership Certified Team, a global network exceeding 46,000 members across 166 countries. She is a certified development strategist and a consultant in human behaviour and education, work that has placed her among the coaches trusted by CEOs, industry leaders, and thought leaders across continents.

Her early legal career already carried signs of the standard she would hold herself to. The Nigerian Law School recognized her with the award for Best in Professional Ethics, a distinction that speaks to discipline rather than decoration.

Recognition on the World Stage

Ekpo’s list of honours reads like a map of the causes she has championed. She was selected for the pioneer cohort of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative as a Mandela Washington Fellow, later serving as Chairperson of the Advocacy Committee on the Regional Advisory Board for West Africa. 

Her written work on socio-economic development has drawn international recognition in its own right: the GOI Peace Foundation in Tokyo honoured her paper “Paradigm Shift, A Step in the Right Direction,” the Nigerian Financial Institution Training Centre recognized her submission on managing Nigeria’s domestic public debt, and the Nigerian Tourism Development Board awarded her essay on the history of tourism in the country.

She is a two-time recipient of the Golden Quill award from the National Academy of Bestselling Authors in Hollywood, earned for co-authoring bestselling books alongside figures such as Brian Tracy and Robert Allen. In 2014 and again in 2017, she was named Honorary Citizen and Goodwill Ambassador for the State of Arkansas. Leading Ladies Africa named her among the most influential women in Nigeria in 2017, and in 2023 she was recognized as one of the Most Inspiring Women in Enterprise in Nigeria.

The most striking of her recent honours arrived in 2025, when the University of Southampton named her the first recipient of its Outstanding Contribution Alumni Award, breaking a 163-year precedent at one of the United Kingdom’s most respected academic institutions. The award recognized her advocacy for female empowerment, her work in organizational leadership, and her broader drive for positive change.

From Seminar Room to Global Platform

For ten years, Ekpo’s globally acclaimed seminar “The Blueprint of How” has helped people across Africa translate ideas into sustainable, impact-driven businesses and initiatives. The work carried enough weight to be shortlisted by the United Kingdom’s British Council Awards for Social Impact in Nigeria, a recognition of its measurable effect on the ground rather than its ambition on paper.

A decade on, that seminar has grown into something larger. A Voice in the World’s Leading Halls

Ekpo’s teaching and speaking record extends into some of the most demanding academic settings in the world. She has spoken and taught at the University of Oxford, Yale, Harvard, Howard University, the University of Southampton, and High Point University in North Carolina, among others. She serves as a mentor on the Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme, sits on the Board of Directors of Wentors, an information technology organization working to increase the participation and retention of women in technology, and continues to serve in advisory roles across several institutions.

Building a Home for Knowledge

What Ekpo is pursuing now goes beyond conferences and seminars. She is building Africa’s first Global Knowledge Centre, conceived as a permanent space where knowledge, leadership, innovation, culture, and human development can meet, drawing people and ideas from across Africa and the wider world.

The Centre represents the latest expression of a philosophy Ekpo has practiced for years, one built on the belief that people and organizations achieve more when they are given the tools to unlock their own potential, sharpen their decision-making, and turn what they know into what they do. That philosophy, once delivered through seminars and speaking engagements, is now taking physical form on the ground in Uyo.

The Centre will be formally commissioned during The Global Knowledge Festival, a four-day gathering bringing together leading voices in business, leadership, innovation, culture, and human development. For Ekpo, the Festival marks not an endpoint but a beginning, the first chapter of an institution she intends to stand for generations.

Her ambition for Uyo is specific and unambiguous. She wants it to become a destination where people arrive not simply to visit, but to learn, to exchange ideas, to build relationships, and to create solutions together.
