In a major move to empower the next generation of digital media voices across the continent, the Google News Initiative (GNI) has selected six independent Nigerian news platforms to participate in its prestigious Emerging News Voices Growth Lab.
The intensive multi-month virtual accelerator, which officially concluded in late September 2026, was designed to equip emerging, digital-native newsrooms across Sub-Saharan Africa with the tools needed for long-term financial independence and operational resilience.

Out of a highly competitive cohort of roughly 20 creators from across the region, six standout Nigerian media platforms secured their spots in the programme:
- The Republic
- More Branches TV
- Onlinebanker
- Adetunji Films
- Wearegst
- Iswellthecapitalist
Future-Proofing Journalism with AI
A cornerstone of this year’s GNI Growth Lab was the practical integration of cutting-edge artificial intelligence. The chosen creators underwent extensive, hands-on training with advanced Google AI technologies—including Gemini, NotebookLM, Google Trends, and SynthID. The training focused on using these tools ethically to streamline resource-heavy workflows, such as rapid research, audio transcription, language translation, and rigorous content verification.
Beyond technological innovation, the curriculum focused heavily on modernizing video storytelling techniques and diversifying monetization models.
Breaking Free from the Algorithm
With social media algorithms becoming increasingly unpredictable, a major strategic focus of the lab was helping creators establish first-party relationships with their readers and viewers. Participants were trained on how to migrate their primary audiences onto independent web platforms, localized apps, and dedicated newsletters, ensuring they own their audience data and revenue pipelines.
As creator-led media outlets increasingly dictate how younger generations consume news, this Google initiative represents a vital step toward ensuring Africa’s most innovative storytelling platforms can thrive independently in the digital age.
