How I collected $600,000 for Emefiele – CBN ex-director tells court

0

A former Director of Information Technology of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, John Ayoh, has explained how he collected $600,000 allegedly for contract gratification for the embattled ex-apex bank governor, Godwin Emefiele.

Ayoh, while being led in evidence by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) counsel, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), on Monday, told an Ikeja Special Offences Court that he spent eight years in the apex bank.

He told the court that he received a letter from the agency concerning two transactions he facilitated through Emefiele.

Ayoh, Head of Procurement and Support Services, PSS Department, told the court that the first envelope containing $400,000 was brought to his house in Lekki.

In contrast, he received the second envelope containing $200,000 at the Tinubu Head Office of the CBN.

Ayoh said he was vested with powers to receive applications for the award of contracts to select successful bidders.

According to him, the first leg of the transaction was at his residence in Lekki Phase One, while the second envelope money he received occurred at the Tinubu Head Office of the CBN.

“The man to deliver the second transaction came to our office in Lagos, and I informed the governor, but he said he did not want to see a third party and that I should bring the envelope myself.

“I complied with the instruction and delivered it to his office. Mr John Adeola was the one I sent my address to, and he came to my house. He is the governor’s assistant, and the total money I received on his behalf was $400,000 and $200,000,” he alleged.

The witness informed the court that the vendors who allegedly brought the envelopes with money were in charge of implementing Netapp Storage Architectural and Infrastructural Services.

While under cross-examination by the first defence counsel, Mr Olalekan Ojo (SAN), he told the court that his schedule of duties did not include running errands for Emefiele, but he directly worked under him.

Ayoh confirmed to the court that Emefiele was not a member of the PSS but a member of the Major Contract Tender Committee (MCTC).

He added that he had never facilitated the commission of any crime.

Ojo asked if the witness wrote in his statement that he was forced to aid or abet the commission of accepting gratification.

“I do not remember the exact word that I used, and I did not write in my statement that I opened the two envelopes on the two occasions to check the total sum of money.

“I wrote a statement, which implied that the money in the envelopes was given to me to influence the contract award. I did not take part in the decision of the MCTC, but I recommended that the prize be given, and I was not bribed.

“The EFCC invited me on February 17. I was not arrested, but I returned home on administrative bail”, the witness said.

The witness told the court that he operated under duress while he received the two envelopes from the contractors.

“On your honour, did you indicate in your statement that you were acting under duress while running errands for the first defendant,” the learned silk asked.

The prosecution, however, objected to the question and argued that the witness’s statement was not before the court.

The first defence counsel sought to admit the defendant’s statement into evidence.

After that, Justice Rahman Oshodi admitted the witness’s statement (three pages) into evidence, following the arguments and counterarguments of the counsel.

The witness told the court that the instructions from Emefiele indicated that he bent the rules.

The judge, after that, adjourned the case until May 3 for continuation of cross-examination.

Emefiele’s counsel also pleaded with the court to release the defendant to him on self-recognition because he had not met with his bail application.

The learned silk, however, prayed to the court that the defendant would meet up before May 17.

There were no objections from the second defence counsel, and the prosecution left the decision at the court’s discretion.

Recall that a dispatch rider had allegedly collected $3 million in cash for the embattled ex-CBN governor.

Emefiele has been under investigation since his removal as CBN boss last June by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

CBN stops Opay, Kuda, Palmpay, Moniepoint from boarding new customers

Four Nigerian fintech companies have been directed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to suspend onboarding new customers.

The affected fintech are OPay, Palmpay, Kuda Bank, and Moniepoint.

This directive comes amidst investigations into allegations that accounts on these platforms have been used for illegal foreign exchange transactions.

A representative from two of the affected companies confirmed the CBN’s order is linked to these accusations.

However, they noted that the directive might be misdirected, as the majority of the implicated accounts belong to commercial banks, not fintech platforms.

“I can confirm that 90% of the accounts implicated in the illicit forex transactions are with commercial banks, and only 10% are with fintechs,” one of the sources said.

“Why then has the CBN not extended this directive to the commercial banks? We face a widespread issue here, and targeting fintechs seems like an unfair focus on the more vulnerable targets.”

PRESIDENT TINUBU TO SAMSUNG CEO: NIGERIA IS THE BEST DESTINATION IN TERMS OF VALUE FOR MONEY; YOUR TECHNOLOGY WITH NIGERIAN INGENUITY WILL CREATE LIMITLESS OPPORTUNITIES

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT TINUBU TO SAMSUNG CEO: NIGERIA IS THE BEST DESTINATION IN TERMS OF VALUE FOR MONEY; YOUR TECHNOLOGY WITH NIGERIAN INGENUITY WILL CREATE LIMITLESS OPPORTUNITIES

President Bola Tinubu says Nigeria’s investment environment operates on the principle of ‘a willing-buyer and willing-seller’, which ensures seamless access to capital for investors both within and outside the country.

The President gave the assurance on Sunday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, during a meeting with the President and Chief Executive Officer of Samsung, Hong Namkoong, and the Chairman of Samsung Investment Global, Jungwook Kim.

The meeting took place on the margins of the World Economic Forum Special Meeting on Global Collaboration, Growth and Energy for Development.

”Nigeria is a very huge country with a huge and able population. We have vibrant youths ready to learn and progress. In fact, our young do not wait for us. They go ahead of us in their determination to succeed. We must keep up and provide opportunities for them to excel with. We have an infrastructure deficit and you can take advantage of that and invest early and deeply in an environment that is absorptive and ready for it. It is modeled after a willing-buyer and willing-seller arrangement. Easy capital in and easy capital out.

The President took time to detail the significant opportunities across sectors for investment within the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund, which involves the potential utilization of co-finance instruments on critical infrastructure and technology which Samsung is well known to produce.

President Tinubu also harped on the importance of deepening collaboration in the crude oil, natural gas, renewable energy, engineering, technology and agriculture sectors, emphasizing the potential for vast private sector participation in the establishment of fully-embedded, off-grid, cold-chain integration across sub-industries in the agriculture sector to forestall post-harvest losses with mass refrigeration capacity.

”We are ready to discuss and discover one another more. We can benefit so much from collaborative effort. You have the know-how, and we have the willingness. Seize this opportunity,’’ the President told the Samsung executives.

Samsung Chairman Kim expressed Samsung’s interest in expanding its presence in Nigeria, citing the successes of sister companies already operating in the country while laying out potential new opportunities in Nigeria.

”We have built many power stations around the world. We are top of the class in gas-fired power plant construction. We have an ever-increasing portfolio in the production of renewable energy solutions around the world. We can make a lot of progress in Nigeria’s energy sector as well as bringing our technology to other key productive sectors.

”Transmission lines and smart grids are areas where we see increasing demand globally. You need infrastructure anywhere you go. We are good at metropolitan rail lines; we are good at bridge construction and any of these types of infrastructure projects, in addition to oil and gas engineering projects. We are looking forward to knowing Nigeria better under your leadership and to see how we can penetrate the Nigerian market deeper. This is a great opportunity for us,” Mr. Kim concluded.

PRESIDENT TINUBU TO BILL GATES: TECHNOLOGY IS THE ENEMY OF CORRUPTION; WE ARE INVESTING IN TECHNOLOGY TO ENSURE TRANSPARENCY AND ACCELERATE PERFORMANCE

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT TINUBU TO BILL GATES: TECHNOLOGY IS THE ENEMY OF CORRUPTION; WE ARE INVESTING IN TECHNOLOGY TO ENSURE TRANSPARENCY AND ACCELERATE PERFORMANCE

President Bola Tinubu says his administration is investing in technology that is tailored towards ensuring transparency and accountability in government and accelerating public-sector performance and service delivery to the Nigerian people.

Speaking during a meeting with Microsoft Founder and Philanthropist, Mr. Bill Gates, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Special Meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday, President Tinubu said technology is a potent weapon against corruption and financial impropriety in public service.

Emphasizing his unwavering commitment to deliver reliable technology that will support a national consumer credit system and many other critical new government interventions for all Nigerians, the President said resistance is often expected when efforts are made to strengthen systems and forestall malfeasance.

“Technology is the enemy of fraud, corruption, and irregularity. We have been working hard on improving technology.

“There is always the initial resistance. Corruption, self-interest, and fraudulent activity will always be an enemy, but when you bend that curve, you will receive the benefit. The nation will receive the benefit,” the President said.

Recounting how he deployed technology to enhance the revenue base of Lagos State as governor, President Tinubu said he ensured the collection and utilization of essential data, creating an efficient tax system for the state.

“When I was governor of Lagos State, I faced challenges. I started with N600 million and ended up with over N8 billion. And right now, they are targeting a trillion naira with the use of technology in the state. There is no other shortcut. We must invest in technology. We must focus, be diligent, and work hard,” the President said.

In his remarks, Mr. Gates informed the President of a one-identity technological platform that can integrate variegated data, while explaining the centrality of data harmonization to planning, security, and tax efficiency.

“We are working with Mr. Wale Edun, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, on digitization. Before you came into office, there were a few things attempted in identity management. But they have been very scattered. There have been multiple identification systems.

“Now, there is a plan to take that technology called MOSIP and use it for this identification platform so that people can get digital benefits. We are providing support for that, and we can provide more support.

“With MOSIP ID, there is potential application in all government payment programmes. It helps with payment efficiency and bank accounts, and eventually, when everyone is using that, it makes tax collection easier. That benefit will take a few years. However, there will be more bank accounts, more financial inclusion, and effective government payment programmes,” the former Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft said.

Mr. Gates said Nigeria has the capacity to manage this system and related-technological systems as the nation brims with talented youths.

“The last time I went to the Microsoft office in Lagos, I saw the amazing work that they were doing and how they were growing their operations. So, you have a lot of Nigerian talents to manage these systems,” he said.

The businessman also spoke about some high-yield seeds and a variety of crops with the potential for improved productivity and nutrition in all regions of the country.

He said countries like the United States and Brazil have been using these seeds and that they have been tested and certified as safe.

“There is no safety issue with these seeds. Supporting the Minister of Agriculture’s effort in this regard is something that we feel is important and worth supporting,” Mr. Gates added.

Responding to Mr. Gates’ submission, President Tinubu said: “We will look at this and work on it further. I am proud of Nigeria’s youths. They are very excited and creative with technology. They encourage us as we continue to press our reform efforts forward for their future prosperity. This is Nigeria’s time to become what it ought to be.”

Mike Adenuga indelible footprints on Nigeria as he celebrates 71 today

0

Today, Monday, April 29, is the birthday of billionaire business mogul and founder of leading telecoms services provider, Globacom, Dr. Mike Adeniyi Agbolade Ishola Adenuga Jr.

The highly revered and celebrated African business guru, role model and philanthropist extraordinaire was born into the noble family of late Pa Michael Agbolade Adenuga Sr and Ma Juliana Oyindamola, at the famous Adeoyo Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State, exactly seventy one years ago.

Truth is that you can’t just talk about Dr. Adenuga without discussing and dissecting his large heart, which flows with unparalleled and unequalled generosity.

In fact, Dr. Adenuga’s milk of human kindness does not flow only in Nigeria, but across Africa and indeed, the rest of the world.

Otunba Adenuga’s philanthropy reverberates and quakes around the globe with uncountable testimonies from beneficiaries, both living and dead.

And unlike most billionaires, the chairman and founder of Conoil does not make noise or makes it a news item whenever he gives.

Amazingly, the brilliant billionaire with a very sound mind whose birthday many around the globe are celebrating today, just cherishes giving freely and wholeheartedly, without drawing any attention to himself.

He does it quietly and anonymously. In most cases, he doesn’t even know most of his lucky beneficiaries. What a large heart from a man with a golden heart flowing with compassion for his fellow humans!

Aside creating wealth and empowering humanity through his iconic brands like Glo and Conoil, another thing that thrills and gives Dr. Adenuga who is fondly called the Bull, extreme joy and fulfilment is the art and act of generosity laced with kindness.

It is often said by those very close to Dr. Adenuga that his generosity knows no bounds. It cuts across ethnicity and religion.

The amiable and immensely blessed man of means from Ijebu Igbo, in Ogun State, south west, Nigeria doesn’t know how to stop or say no when it comes to blessing and empowering humanity with his God-given wealth and resources.

The late boxing legend, Muhammed Ali captures succinctly Dr. Adenuga’s life of unstoppable generosity, charity and philanthropy in these immortal words: ‘’we can only be truly generous when we expect nothing in return.”

Amazingly, the Guru with the Midas touch simply gives without expecting anything from anyone in return. That is Dr. Adenuga for you. A selfless billionaire, who goes about doing good for humanity with his wealth.

It is also a known fact that for Dr. Adenuga, the undisputable pillar of prosperity and gem of generosity, giving is a special way of life, which he strictly adheres to religiously.

As I write this birthday tribute, I have never met Dr. Adenuga in my entire life (praying to meet him one-on-one, someday). But I have been touched by his generosity and magnanimous heart, even without him knowing me or any member of my family.

Little wonder our respected senior in the media profession, Otunba Dele Momodu calls Dr. Adenuga the ‘’Spirit of Africa.’’

Permit me to plead that we should further elevate that befitting and well deserved title to the ‘’Spirit of the Universe,’’ for he is truly a benevolent spirit that touches and blesses both known and unknown persons.

Sincerely speaking, great men like Otunba Adenuga are very, very scarce on the face of the earth. They are uncommon. Atypical. Out of the ordinary. You hardly find them in every epoch or aeon. They are specially created rare species that grace our planet once in a lifetime.

Many years ago, when I was still actively covering and reporting the Nigerian entertainment sector as a young journalist working with The Sun newspaper, a top and famous Nollywood star told me a story of how Adenuga’s Globacom changed her life for the better.

This leading actress was among the first set of Nollywood stars Glo engaged and paid hugely and handsomely as brand ambassadors.

The talented thespian told me she nearly fainted when she got the alert of her first payment from Glo, which were some cool millions of naira, in her account then.

Prior to that huge payment from Glo, she confessed to me that despite being one of the leading actresses of her era, she had never earned a million naira as professional fee from acting or any endorsement deal, despite acting for over a decade, until Dr. Adenuga’s Glo changed her life and story and instantly made her a multi-millionaire over night with millions to play and fondle with.

That is Otunba Adenuga for you. He does not give less and will also never settle for less.

In fact, this actress whose name I want to keep anonymous told me she finally ‘fainted’ when Glo renewed her contract the following year and doubled her endorsement fee, thus completely eradicating struggling and smiling from her life and career.

And she was not the only one that enjoyed this largesse cum empowerment package from Otunba Adenuga’s Glo. She told me the deal was for all the qualified Nollywood stars, both male and female signed on by Glo that period.

They all became instant millionaires thus putting an end to their lives of struggles and pains as Nollywood super stars.

Interestingly, this life changing endorsement deal from Glo, which is still running till date, has changed the fortunes of several celebrities within and outside tinsel town.

Meanwhile, it was when other telecoms brands saw the overwhelming success recorded with the Globacom brand ambassadors deal that they quickly followed suit.

Just like they did too, when Glo gave millions of suffering Nigerians the life saving per second billing offer, which they had hitherto told us repeatedly was not possible or attainable. Indeed, Nigerians are truly and happily Glo-wing with pride, courtesy of Dr. Adenuga and his visionary leadership skills, style and strategy.

Otunba Adenuga, unarguably one of the richest men in the world (not Africa, forget Forbes rating), has also brought similar life changing and transforming gestures he gave Nollywood stars to other aspects of our national lives, including music, sports, arts and culture, among others. The sole aim is to empower and impact lives positively, which he has been doing passionately for almost five decades and counting.

It’s no longer news that Dr. Adenuga’s Glo, Conoil and other brands from his stable employ and empower thousands of Nigerians and even foreigners, thus creating and redistributing wealth to aid the continued growth and sustainability of our nation’s economy.

With all sense of responsibility, if all billionaires or even ten percent of the world’s billionaires are like Otunba Adenuga, Nigeria, Africa and indeed the rest of the world would surely be a better place for all of us to live in and thrive without rancour, acrimony, fear or favour.

Dr. Adenuga’s legendary generosity further reminds me of the memorable words of Sir Winston Churchill, the iconic war-time hero, writer, orator and twice prime minister of the United Kingdom, who categorically and clearly stated: “we make a living by what we get, but we make a live by what we give.”

Again, I’m of the opinion that Dr. Adenuga’s greatness goes beyond what he has achieved in life in the last seventy one years. His greatness truly and clearly lies in what he has given out to humanity through his unending art and act of generosity cum extraordinary philanthropy.

Interestingly, this to me and many others within and outside our shores is definitely what stands out this unassuming national treasure and icon in the pantheon of great men nationally and globally.

Dr. Adenuga, who early this year was announced and named DAYLIGHT Online Newspaper Man of the Year, for his giant strides and invaluable contributions to our nation’s economy over the years, is undoubtedly one of the biggest players and investors in Nigeria and indeed, Africa’s telecoms sector.

Otunba Adenuga, one of the few and authentic national assets our country can boast of, is also hugely and actively involved in Nigeria’s banking, oil and gas sectors respectively. He was also the first Nigerian to strike oil in commercial quantity with his Conoil, in 1991.

Frankly speaking, you cannot talk about Nigeria’s economy and its growth without mentioning Dr. Mike Adenuga’s revered name, especially in the last four to five decades.

Germany detains alleged Nigerian mafia members

0

German police have arrested 11 Nigerian men suspected of being in a mafia group who orchestrated large-scale dating scams.

The Black Axe gang was involved in “multiple areas of criminal activity” globally, Bavarian police said in a statement.

In Germany, the organisation focuses on romance scams and money laundering, the force added.

The statement said: “Using false identities, the fraudsters for example signalled their intention to marry and in the course of further contact repeatedly demand money under various pretexts.”

Globally, the gang’s main areas of operation were “human-trafficking, fraud, money-laundering, prostitution and drug-trafficking”.

The arrested suspects all hold Nigerian citizenship and are aged between 29 and 53.

They were detained on Tuesday in raids across the region of Bavaria following a police probe that lasted more than two years.

A 2021 BBC investigation of Black Axe unearthed evidence that the group had infiltrated politics in Nigeria and ran a killing operation spanning the globe.

In 2017, Canadian authorities broke up a money-laundering scheme linked to Black Axe worth in excess of $5bn – hinting at the scale of the gang’s global financial operations. Nobody knows how many similar schemes are out there, the leaked documents show members communicating between Lagos, London, Tokyo, Dubai, and a dozen other countries.

In Nigeria, the Black Axe is better known for its street level crime and brutality and alleged links to politics and business. But the nature of the connections has long been murky and unsubstantiated.

A former member of the Edo State government, speaking to the international media for the first time, told the BBC Black Axe membership is widespread within the halls of power.

“If you sat me down and say: ‘Can you identify Black Axe in government?’ I will identify,” said Tony Kabaka, who told the BBC he had survived repeated assassination attempts since leaving government and whose house and front gate are littered with bullet holes.

“Most politicians, almost everybody is involved,” he said.

We sent the government of Edo State the allegations that they have ties to the Black Axe, but they did not respond.

The “Black Axe” gang has been operating for decades in Nigeria and is among the country’s most-feared organised crime syndicates. Membership of these syndicates, known as “cults” or “fraternities”, is outlawed in Nigeria.

0

Former Benue Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, has asked the immediate past governor of Kogi State, Mr Yahaya Bello, to come out of hiding and answer his case with the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).

Ortom stated this on Sunday at the Redeemed Church in Makurdi during the thanksgiving service organized by his aides to mark his 63rd birthday anniversary.

Alleged N80.2 Fraud: EFCC serves Yahaya Bello his charges

He urged Bello to come out and defend his administration adding that his continuous hiding would bring disgrace to former governors across the country.

The ex Benue governor also urged his former appointees to always come forward and give account of their stewardship when called upon saying that they could only run when they had something to hide.

“I want to use this opportunity to advise my younger brother and friend, Governor Yahaya Bello, not to disgrace former governors. You don’t need to hide, you don’t need to resist arrest or anything. Go there and respond.

“EFCC are human beings. If they are making enquiries, the laws are there. I have tried to get him on phone, I could not, I have tried those around him, I could not so I want this to be noted.

“Do not insult the leaders or elders on social media. We all must be part of the process to bring peace so that progress, prosperity and development will come.

“The youth must take advantage of the social media to bring development to themselves and to the state.

“The whole world is in your palm, in your tablets and in your phone. Look at the essence of the internet.

“Now that you cannot go to the farms, go to the website and see what people are doing in other to be parts of the world and to add value and bring wealth to yourselves,” he said.

Ortom expressed gratitude to God for his mercies over his life and family saying he left government house a better christian and that he would continue to be and worship in the house of God.

In their remarks, the Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Michael Aondakaa, Chairman, Benue PDP, Mr John Ngbede, Sen Abba Moro, all appreciated Chief Ortom for his dogged fight for the security of the people.

Why I’m Always Shouting in My Movies – Sola Sobowale

Sola Sobowale is widely praised for her amazing acting chops but one critici.sm she does get from time to time is that she shouts a lot. During her new interview with Chude, Sola was asked why she’s always shouting and here’s what she had to say:

Mmm, that’s what puts food on the table (laughs). Have you seen when people [are watching movies] and say “oh they should have given it to Sola na!”, you see now? Give me, let me blow the roof off! Let me open it! If it’s not Sola, it can never be Sola. But for your information, there is nothing Sola cannot do oh. Everything, bring it on, it’s a full package.

The thing is the way we look at movies differs. The way we receive or understand things also differs. After Toyin Tomato, I went to LTV8, I pulled over. I came down from the vehicle. I saw a good looking 6 ft man, he came, drove in. Pulled over, saw me, and the man went for a stone. Yes! Wan were! I took off! The man nearly stoned me. When people asked “what happened?”, he said “That lady is mean!”. That is one.

When I shot The Wedding Party, on Instagram, I was reading “Aunty Mary (Alibaba’s wife), your husband is going oh.” (laughs) Even when we were filming, somebody on set said to Alibaba, “Ali, should we get you a bed?” For me and Ali. Not only that, somebody else on that set went to Alibaba and asked “Are you sure you and Sola Sobowale…” (laughs). So when Ali said it to me, I said “They said that? Ali, let’s give them more!” (laughs). King of Boys, they want to kīll Ade Tiger and Sola Sobowale. Somebody went to my manager and said to my manager, “what’s going on? I’m very sure something is happening.”

This is beautiful. I love it. I love it so much. Do you know why I love it? Because I understand my work. Because I know my craft. What I do is make believe isn’t it? I am an actor. This is what I know how to do. So I want more and I want people to feel like that. If you don’t feel like that, I should be concerned that I don’t know what I’m doing, that that’s not my field. What I am doing, that is the work!

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT SOLA SOBOWALE SHOUTING?

What do you all think of her acting in general and about her response to this question?

Story of Ayinla Omowura : A Yoruba music legend

0

Waidi Ayinla Yusuf Gbogbolowo better known as Ayinla Omowura (1933 – 6 May 1980) was a Nigerian Apala musician born in Itoko, Abeokuta in 1933

Omowura was the son of Yusuff Gbogbolowo, a blacksmith, and Wuramotu Morenike.

He did not have formal education and started out working at his father’s smithy but left and went on to working several jobs as a driver, butcher, carpenter and bus park boy.

He was however discovered by Adewole Alao Oniluola, who later became his lead drummer and started an apprenticeship in Olalomi, an Apala variant.

Omowura was known for feuding with other musicians including his superiors such as Haruna Ishola, whom he later acknowledged to be his superior. He also feuded with Ayinde Barrister, Fatai Olowonyo, Yesufu Olatunji and Dauda Epo Akara.

These feuds coloured his music over his discography. He was noted to have a quick temper and engaged in marijuana use and in physical altercations.

Despite being unlettered, Omowura was enlightened about current events and had a command of puns, proverbs innuendos and metaphors. He was a social commentator, critic as well as a moral instructor.

He often served as a mouthpiece for passing on government policies to the masses and was also a messenger of the masses back to the government. In his 1976 album, Owo Udoji he hailed the government for salary increment but however demanded for same increment in the private sector In Orin Owo Ile Eko, He explained the Lagos rent edict to his listeners and also praised the Mobolaji Johnson-led Lagos State government for the masses-oriented programme.

He influenced the response of the people to the policy and also explained the National Census of 1973 in his album National Census.

the 1973 album, Challenge Cup ’73 he explained the change in driving from the left to the right hand side and the change of the Nigerian Currency from the colonial Pound Sterling to the Naira and Kobo during the General Yakubu Gowon-led military government.

Asides current affairs, he used his albums to extol the importance of sporting activities. His music also preached positive change in society and portrayed both mourning and celebration.

He was also a critic of women who bleached their skin and promiscuous women.

He had many aliases and earned the moniker, Hadji Costly because of his flamboyant dressing in agbadas made of high quality Swiss lace and gold jewellery.

His other aliases include Egunmogaji, Anigilaje and Alujannu Elere which demonstrated his status as the enfant terrible in music of the time.

Omowura was a muslim by birth, he practiced the religion and performed the Hajj in 1975. He however also engaged in traditional religion practices. He was married to Afusatu of the Ile Eleni clan and Tawakalitu Owonikoko.

Omowura was killed in a bar room brawl on May 6, 1980 aged 47. He died from a cerebral haemorrhage after being struck on the head with a beer mug by Bayewu, his manager at the time.

Bayewu was taken to court and sentenced to death a few years later. On the day he died, EMI Records recorded at least 50,000 copies sale on each of his albums.

Following the death of Omowura in 1980 and Haruna Ishola in 1983, the popularity of Apala music waned and has been largely replaced by Fuji music. New school Nigerian musicians, Terry Apala and Q-dot Alagbe have made music influenced by Omowura’s style.
