Lagos PDP members convene to strategize and unite in their efforts to propel the party towards progress

0

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) declared its commitment to rejuvenate the party, undeterred by the internal strife that led to its significant defeat in the last general elections in the state.

The PDP opposition party made this resolution during its General Assembly, led by Chief Olabode George, the former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP in the state.

The gathering, held at Chief George’s Ikoyi office, aimed to reassure members and supporters that, despite the election setback, the party remained united.

Notably, the PDP experienced its most substantial defeat since 1999 due to internal conflicts, with some leaders openly supporting the opposition Labour Party (LP).

During the assembly, Chief George, also known as the Atona Oodua of Yoruba land, encouraged members to stand firm, assuring them that the party would recover its former prominence and avoid fading into obscurity.

He further urged the national party leadership to conduct a thorough post-mortem analysis to address the issues that plagued the party.

He emphasized the need for accountability and financial responsibility, calling for those responsible for actions detrimental to the party to be held accountable.

Resurrection of Lagos’ History: The 1851 Agidingbi Chess Board Chronicles, as shared by the Erelu of Lagos

0

Impressed by the exhibition of the 1851 Agidingbi chess board game, Chief Abiola Dosumu, the Erelu of Lagos, expressed how the exhibition had breathed life back into Lagos’s rich history.

During the event, he commended the organizers for their original exhibition, remarking that it offered a captivating portrayal of Lagos’s history in a unique and authentic manner.

He noted that while chess games often tell the stories of foreigners, this one highlighted the struggles and resilience of the local people, celebrating the ancestors’ fortitude and their role in preserving the community. He praised the exhibition as a wonderful achievement.

The creative director, Olúdamólá Adebowale, explained that the inspiration behind the creation of the Lagos ingenious chess game was to document one of the significant war stories in Lagos history.

The 1851 Agidingbi chess board marked Nigeria’s first-ever variant of chess, and during a private exhibition at the Red Door gallery in Lagos, participants were taken on a journey into the historical narrative of the 1851 bombardment of Lagos by the British naval forces.

This Lagos-themed chess game, 1851 Agidingbi, skillfully integrated the city’s history and culture with cutting-edge gaming technology, delivering a truly unique gaming experience.

Adebowale emphasized that their goal was to preserve Lagos’s history using modern technology and digital assets.

The chess game, crafted from wood and acrylic materials, holds a special place in the hearts of Lagosians, with the name ‘Agidingbi’ echoing the sounds of the cannon guns fired during the British forces’ bombardment.

These sounds reverberated as far as Badagry and Lagos mainland, leaving a lasting impact on the city’s history.

The 1851 Agidingbi chess game emerged in 2023, with plans to establish it as a collector’s item. It not only showcases the characters but also the intricate design behind it.

The concept for this chess game was born in 2018, and its development began during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. In 2021, they launched the chess game app to commemorate the 170th historical memorial of the 1851 bombardment of Lagos.

Now, they proudly present the first variant of the chess game board, a dream realized through the dedication of many hands, and a cherished gift to Lagos.

Flood Prevention Initiative: The World Bank Collaborates with the Oyo State Government to Build Seven Bridges

The Coordinator of the Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project (IUFMP), Mr. Olasunkanmi Sokeye, has announced a collaborative effort between the Oyo state government and the World Bank.

Their joint initiative involves the construction of seven bridges aimed at mitigating the issue of flooding within the state.

The project’s commencement is scheduled to follow the subsiding of rains, with November 5 as the anticipated start date.

Mr. Sokeye revealed these details during his speech at the Annual General Meeting of the Geoinformation Society of Nigeria (GEOSON), Oyo State Chapter in Ibadan.

He also mentioned that the project is expected to span a duration of six months.

These proposed bridges will target various critical areas, including Ago Tailor, Odo Ona; Oluyole, Rhema area; Akala Express, Agara Area; Odo Ona Kekere, Old Ijebu Road, Orogun, and Ona Ara, Ariyo area. Mr. Sokeye acknowledged that the construction process might result in temporary inconveniences for the affected communities and commuters who use these routes.

Nevertheless, he urged them to endure these short-term challenges, emphasizing that the long-term benefits would outweigh the inconveniences.

He also assured that alternative routes would be provided to alleviate the difficulties.

Mr. Sokeye went on to explain the primary factors contributing to flooding in Ibadan, attributing 70% of the flooding incidents to the indiscriminate dumping of solid waste in the river.

The second factor he highlighted was the haphazard development of flood plains, with people constructing houses right up to the river edges, which contradicts best practices.

The State Commissioner for Environment in Oyo State, Mr. Abdulmojeed Mogbojubola, underscored the importance of leveraging Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to address environmental issues.

He encouraged the younger generation to embrace this technology for tackling environmental challenges.

In their commitment to tackling environmental issues with technology, the state has acquired an Early Warning Instrument capable of predicting flooding and its severity.

However, the challenge of finding personnel with the required expertise remains.

Notably, both Mr. Sokeye and Mr. Mogbojubola were recognized and received awards at the event.

The Chairman of GEOSON, Oyo State Chapter, Chief Musa Adetoro, emphasized the significance of GIS in organizing, displaying, and interpreting spatial data for location intelligence.

He encouraged professionals, academics, and government officials to collaborate under the GEOSON umbrella to enhance their capacity and performance.

Furthermore, the GEOSON’s Innovation and Leadership Impact Award was presented to other deserving individuals, including Oyo State Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Lamidi Abiodun; Chief Executive Officer of Geotechnics Services Limited, Dr. Adediji Akanji, and former Surveyor General of the state, Mr. Olufemi Akintola.

Dino Melaye’s campaign expresses concern regarding Yahaya Bello’s alleged acquisition of hotels

Official Statement

Kogi2023: Dino/Deen Campaign Expresses Concern Regarding Takeover of Hotels by Yahaya Bello’s Government.

The Dino/Deen Campaign Council of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has voiced its apprehension over recent reports indicating that the Kogi State government has issued a request for all hotels in the state to surrender their rooms to designated state officials.

The campaign contends that the directive to block access to all hotels in Kogi state by the government serves a concerning purpose – namely, to facilitate the accommodation of hired troublemakers, rogue security personnel, and other non-state actors by Governor Yahaya Bello and the agents of the APC. This appears to be a deliberate scheme in preparation for possible disturbances in the upcoming gubernatorial election scheduled for November 11.

Furthermore, our campaign has received information about Governor Bello’s alleged plans to utilize these individuals to seize electoral materials on the election day, following the completion of the accreditation process.

We strongly advise hotel owners to decline the state government’s request to release their hotel rooms, as complying with this request could place them at odds with the interests of the public.

It is crucial for hotel proprietors in the state to safeguard their establishments against being exploited by Governor Bello, whose policies have adversely affected the state’s economy and the livelihoods of its people.

The battle to free Kogi state from Governor Bello’s grip and restore economic prosperity to its residents hinges on the outcome of the November 11 election, and Senator Dino Melaye is uniquely positioned to lead our state toward this positive transformation.

We, therefore, implore the people of Kogi not to allow their business enterprises to become sanctuaries for criminals, hooligans, and troublemakers that the APC may intend to import to sow chaos in the state.

Signed

11 students from OAU are set to stand trial for fraud, while the university is in discussions with the EFCC

0

The administration of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has stated that it is in discussions with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in response to the apprehension of 69 individuals suspected of internet fraud, a significant number of whom are students of the university.

On Wednesday, fifty-eight of the students were subsequently released.

During a late-night operation, EFCC officials conducted a raid on hostels located outside the OAU campus, specifically Fine Touch and Superb hostels in the Oduduwa Estate, Ile-Ife. They forcibly entered rooms and apprehended the students.

The President of the Students’ Union, Akinremi Ojo, revealed that the union had information on “72 students picked up from the hostel with phones and cars confiscated.” He called for the release of the students and criticized the approach of the arrests.

A former union official, Joy Abiola, reported that some students were subjected to physical violence during the arrests.

Abiola stated, “The EFCC officials arrived between 1:40 a.m. and 4:00 a.m.” and questioned the justification of arresting individuals for owning iPhones, laptops, and cars, noting that some of the students were tech-savvy experts.

A video shared by one of the students showed them being loaded onto a white Hummer Bus by security officials, who were seen forcefully moving them.

In another video, several vehicles, including the white Hummer Bus, were observed leaving Ile-Ife for the EFCC zonal office in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

Later, the EFCC confirmed the arrest of 69 suspects in Ile-Ife through a statement on its verified Facebook page.

The agency listed the names of the suspects but did not disclose their status as students.

The arrests occurred on November 1, 2023, in the Oduduwa Estate area of Ile-Ife, Osun State, based on credible intelligence suggesting their involvement in fraudulent online activities.

The EFCC noted that the suspects had provided useful statements and would be prosecuted once investigations were completed.

Following the arrests, numerous OAU students, along with union representatives, assembled in Ile-Ife and traveled to the EFCC office in Ibadan to demand the release of their peers.

They staged protests as armed security personnel surrounded the EFCC premises.

The Osun Joint Campus Committee of the National Association of Nigerian Students also issued a statement condemning the students’ arrests, emphasizing the lack of justification or evidence for the invasion of their residences and their transfer to Ibadan.

The Public Relations Officer of the university, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed that the university’s management was at the EFCC office in Ibadan and stated that 58 of the students had been released, while the remaining 11 would face charges.
