The Naira experiences its first rise against the U.S. dollar in three weeks

On Wednesday, the Naira exhibited a positive trend against the US Dollar in the unofficial parallel market, colloquially known as the black market.

During afternoon trading, the exchange rate stood at N1,300 per dollar, marking a notable 0.76% appreciation (equivalent to N10) when compared to the N1,310 rate recorded on the previous Tuesday within the black market.

Amidst persistent foreign exchange pressure, exacerbated by the Naira sinking to as low as N1,310 per dollar, Wednesday showed encouraging signs of relief as demand moderately eased.

The most recent instance of Naira’s value increase occurred on October 3, 2023, when it strengthened by 0.79% (equivalent to N8) against the US Dollar.

It’s important to note that on the preceding Tuesday, the Naira encountered a significant 6.86% depreciation, which followed a 1.85% strengthening against the dollar on the prior Monday in the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM).

Mohbad’s parents revealed that he remained in hiding for half a year due to concerns about potential attacks

The parents of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, famously known as Mohbad, revealed to the Coroner’s Inquest that they stopped going to shows for six months due to their son’s fear of constant beatings, harassment, and bullying from his former label owner, Azeez Fashola, also known as Naira Marley, and his associate, Sammy Larry.

Mohbad expressed his desire to no longer have Naira Marley’s brother, Tunde Fashola, as his manager.

Joseph Aloba, the father, explained that Mohbad was afraid to leave his home for six months, fearing that the substance he consumed at the NDLEA might lead to issues at the airport.

He recounted an incident where Mohbad was injured and mentioned that it was customary for Naira Marley and his associates to attack him.

The mother, Abosede, shared that Mohbad was in constant fear and claimed that Naira Marley collected all the money from Mohbad’s performances due to an ongoing three-year contract.

Mohbad had reported attacks by Naira Marley to the police, but it’s unclear if Naira Marley was summoned.

She also mentioned that she only reconnected with Mohbad in 2019, having separated from his father when he was three years old.

Mohbad’s mother said she initially believed he was meant to be a pastor, but he pursued a music career instead.

She recalled an incident where he was beaten, cried, and claimed that Naira Marley intended to harm him.

On the day of Mohbad’s death, he rushed to Naira Marley’s house after hearing about an NDLEA raid.

The NDLEA took his friends, and he became unwell after drinking water there. Mohbad explained to his mother that Naira Marley wanted to harm him.

He had a show scheduled for September 10, 2023, in Ikorodu, but he passed away shortly after.

The mother noted that her son had warned her not to reveal these details as he feared for her safety.

Joseph Aloba explained that they buried Mohbad quickly because the mortuary had rejected him, and the burial took place on land owned by the deceased.

Aloba also described finding blood-soaked clothes in Mohbad’s room on the day he died, indicating a tragic and troubling situation.

Capital Films launches ₦500 million fund after success with Gangs of Lagos

0

Capital Film Productions, a film financing firm co-founded by a former tech professional, has launched a new fund to invest in Nollywood movies.

Capital Film Productions, a film financing firm founded by Adim Isiakpona, a former Google employee, and Hamza Kassim, a business opportunity manager at Shell, has launched Act 3, a ₦500 million fund, to invest in a lineup of Nollywood movies. Both co-founders were executive producers of the Nollywood hits Gangs of Lagos and Brotherhood; Isiakpona was also an associate producer on Sugar Rush.

In the past three years, Capital Films has raised $800,000 across two funds to support the production of seven films. The company said it saw a 37% cumulative return on both funds. Capital Films pools funds from retail investors—it had 37 investors in the last two funds—and accepts a minimum investment ticket of ₦10 million. The company invests a minimum of ₦50 million and a maximum of ₦100 million in each film.

Isiakpona, the firm’s CEO, told TechCabal that it picks the movies it invests in by reviewing the history of the filmmaker and their business model. The average budget of each movie “depends on the movie and story,” and the average return cycle for investment is 24 months.

Nollywood is currently on a path to globalisation, with new films backed and licenced by international streaming giants Netflix and Amazon Prime. Gangs of Lagos ranks in the top 10 non-English movies on Amazon Prime, while The Black Book was watched more than 70 million times in less than three weeks on Netflix, the biggest streaming platform.

Capital Film also offers advisory services to filmmakers and works with filmmakers on the scripting and casting stages to ensure the film’s marketability and a viable return. “We want to understand the distribution model, the production timeline, and the cost. We always try to ensure that we keep our investment to 50% of the project’s cost, but it can vary from 25% to even less than 25%. We don’t go beyond 50% to ensure that we are not overindexing in one field project,” Isiakpona said.

Tech-focused professionals are increasingly investing in Nollywood

Capital Films’ launch comes as more tech-focused professionals are increasingly financing Nollywood movies or even creating them. The Black Book was directed by Editi Effiong, a former software engineer, and was financed by African startup founders and investors like Nadayer Enegesi (Eden Life), Olumide Soyombo (Voltron Capital), and Ezra Olubi (Paystack). Nollywood appeals to these investors as the return cycle on investment—often 24 months—is shorter than the return cycle on startup investments, which happen in exits and IPOs that are few and far between in Africa’s tech ecosystem.

“Nollywood is on the precipice of growth, and we see ourselves contributing to this growth by providing structure and increasing capacity, either through funding it or through the process of producing the films,” Isiakpona told TechCabal.

For filmmakers, introducing outsiders can offer a new perspective and bring change to an industry that is only beginning to entrench itself in the global economy. Tolu Awobiyi, a filmmaker with a decade of experience and the producer of Bling Lagosians, told TechCabal in September that the VCs have helped filmmakers with business advisory, investment risk management, and stakeholder management.

“I have learned more about navigating the pitfalls of our business from my interactions with my VCs. You find that the VCs who traditionally are interested in film investments are usually very hands-on because they usually have a creative leaning; that is why they are attracted to film investments in the first place, and their experience investing in other industries gives them critical knowledge relevant to managing the risks of a high return environment such as ours,” Awobiyi stated.

As the firm launches, it is closing its third fund, which will fund six movies in 2024, and Isiakpona told TechCabal that the fund will grow to $50 million. “In a way, CFP is a dream come true for us. It all started off as a scrappy idea with ‘Our First Act,’ raising funds from our personal finances to support film projects, to a ‘Second Act’ that saw us managing Liquidity Provider’s funds. From these experiences, we’ve seen firsthand how access to adequate funding and support can uplift the entire production of a film and potentially the industry,” he said.

Supreme Court: Atiku’s request to submit new evidence denied

0

The Supreme Court has rejected the request made by Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, to introduce new evidence in support of his appeal.

Atiku had sought permission from the highest court to present Tinubu’s academic credentials from Chicago State University as proof that the president had submitted forged documents to INEC.

The proceedings, presided over by a seven-member panel led by Justice John Okoro, revolved around arguments regarding the admissibility of this new evidence.

Chris Uche, the lead counsel for Atiku, emphasized the gravity of the forgery allegation against the president as a significant constitutional issue that the apex court should address.

On the other hand, Wole Olanipekun, the counsel for Tinubu, argued against admitting the fresh documents, noting that INEC was not involved in the matter.

In his lead judgment delivered on Thursday, Justice Okoro cited that the application was filed after the legally prescribed 180-day period had elapsed.

He stated that the court lacked the authority to activate section 22 of the Supreme Court Act to admit new evidence, adding that there was no mention of forgery in the appeal’s petition.

As a result, the court ruled that the request could not be granted, considering it untimely and lacking the necessary basis, thus refusing and dismissing it.

The family expresses their dismay as the UNTH holds the woman’s body for a period of one year

0

The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) in Enugu has maintained custody of Mrs. Janet Nwaosu’s body for a full year after allegations that their doctors caused her death.

During this time, the hospital administration has also prevented the family from accessing the deceased.

To recap, the Nwaosu family from Amaeta village in Mgbowo, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State accused Dr. Chibuoke and a nurse of causing the death of their mother, Mrs. Janet, who was admitted to UNTH on October 18, 2022.

The family asserted that Dr. Chibuoke and the nurse administered a drug that led to her death within five minutes, without obtaining consent.

The family further claimed that these healthcare practitioners were not assigned to care for the deceased at the hospital when the fatal injection was administered.

However, over a year later, the Chief Medical Director of the teaching hospital, Dr. Obinna Onodugo, refuses to release Janet’s body due to an incident in which one of the deceased’s children allegedly broke a hospital window after her death.

This act is cited as the reason for the continued detainment.

Despite having paid all necessary fees, the CMD ordered that no family member be allowed to view their mother’s body in the past year.

Augustina Nwaosu, the deceased’s daughter, disclosed that the hospital management has subjected their family to ongoing police involvement and harassment, and even sought her arrest for her complaints and pursuit of justice.

Augustina further recounted how the CMD employed the police to intimidate and harass her family over the past year, with threats of making their lives difficult for raising concerns about the incident.

She implored Nigerians and human rights organizations to lend their support.

She also mentioned that Dr. Jide Uzoigwe, the former Chairman of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at UNTH, had informed her family that they would continually expend resources while the hospital obstructed their efforts in every police investigation related to the case.

She claimed that UNTH management would, at times, influence police officers and feign interest in peaceful resolution while simultaneously apprehending family members using personnel from other police units.

Minister Reassures Nigerians of the Safety of HPV Vaccine

0

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Tunji Alausa, has assured Nigerians that the human papillomavirus vaccine, which was rolled out on Tuesday by the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is safe.

Alausa gave the assurance while speaking to newsmen shortly after his courtesy call on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the Lagos House, Marina, on Wednesday.

“HPV vaccine is 100 per cent safe,” the minister said, adding, “This is a vaccine that has been in existence for about 18 years now, and Nigeria is late to adopt this vaccine.”

He noted that Nigeria has about 8,000 women “dying from cervical cancer” today, stressing that “this vaccine will prevent cervical cancer by 95 per cent.”

He appealed that girls between the ages of nine and 15 years should be encouraged to take the vaccine, adding that some countries are already administering the vaccine to women up to 45 years old.

“It is a safe vaccine. We should encourage all our young girls between the ages of nine and 15 years to get this vaccine. In fact, in other parts of the world, the HPV vaccine has been expanded to (be administered to women) as old as 45 years.

“It saves lives, it prevents cancer. This is one of the preventive things we could do to help our healthcare system,” he said.

Alausa added, “So, let me emphatically say it again: HPV vaccine, human papillomavirus vaccine is 100 per cent safe. I’m a physician. I’m a father. I have a daughter and she got the vaccine when she was 13 years old and that was about 13 years ago.

“So, I’m putting my mouth where my money is; HPV vaccine is safe. Please, discount any ignorant, uneducated social media information you get. HPV vaccine is safe.”

Collaboration with the FG Partners Foundation to strengthen healthcare programs

0

On Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu granted approval for three significant initiatives, among which stands a program aimed at enhancing public health outcomes and a presidential endeavor geared towards unlocking the healthcare value chain.

The particulars of these initiatives were unveiled during a joint press conference conducted by the Minister of Health, Prof. Ali Pate, and Professor Seniat Fisseha, the Vice President for Global Programs at the Buffett Foundation. These revelations followed a closed-door meeting between the President and the aforementioned individuals at the State House in Abuja.

Reiterating President Tinubu’s call for action over words, Prof. Ali Pate emphasized the trio of directives, including the launch of an ambitious, comprehensive program designed to ameliorate public health outcomes.

This program, rooted in the basic healthcare provision fund, aspires to reinvigorate the primary healthcare system.

Moreover, it foresees cooperative efforts with state governments, local communities, and traditional leaders to ensure improved healthcare services in areas like malaria treatment, immunization, maternal and child health, and reproductive health.

Echoing the call for action, Pate asserted, “He (Tinubu) has asked us to talk less and do more. In that spirit, he has asked us to pursue a very ambitious sector-wide program to improve population health outcomes, using the basic healthcare provision fund as a basis for reviving our primary healthcare system and working with state governments and community leaders to ensure that Nigerians receive better quality services and address their concerns.

Furthermore, Prof. Pate announced collaborative efforts encompassing all levels of government and development partners, emphasizing the commitment to avoid setting up parallel systems.

Unlocking the healthcare value chain emerged as the second focal point.

The Health Minister highlighted President Tinubu’s approval of a presidential initiative geared toward the medical industrialization of Nigeria.

This initiative aims to foster collaboration between the public and private sectors, with the government creating an enabling environment while the private sector focuses on essential healthcare production.

Prof. Fisseha, representing the Buffett Foundation, praised the alignment between the foundation’s priorities, which include women, girls, and primary healthcare, and the government’s goals.

She appreciated President Tinubu’s action-oriented approach and expressed enthusiasm about the partnership to support both federal and state governments and communities in delivering health for all.

The Supreme Court is set to render its verdict today on the presidential election dispute involving Tinubu, Atiku, and Obi

0

The leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress, along with the two opposition parties, namely the Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party, are expressing strong confidence in their victory as they await the Supreme Court’s judgment regarding the February 25 presidential election today.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) are contesting the declaration of President Bola Tinubu from the APC as the winner of the election.

Their initial petitions against President Tinubu were dismissed by the Presidential Election Petitions Court in September, leading the PDP and LP, represented by Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, to approach the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the election results.

The Supreme Court, after hearing the cases on Monday, has now scheduled the judgment for Thursday.

Dr. Festus Akande, the Supreme Court’s Director of Information, confirmed this, saying, “Tomorrow, Thursday has been set for judgment on the appeals brought by Atiku and Peter Obi.

In response to this announcement, all three parties are expressing optimism about the upcoming verdict.

The APC Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, firmly believes that the Supreme Court will affirm Tinubu’s victory, citing the compelling evidence presented.

On the contrary, the National Legal Adviser of the LP, Kehinde Edun, is confident that their candidate, Peter Obi, will emerge victorious, emphasizing their presentation of fresh evidence.

The PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, urges the Supreme Court to look beyond narrow considerations in their judgment, highlighting the importance of the decision for the future of the country.
