Movie Review: Ìjọ̀ngbọ̀n [Ìjàngbọ̀n] is not Ìjọ̀gbọ̀n!

0

Ìjọ̀ngbọ̀n [Ìjàngbọ̀n] is not Ìjọ̀gbọ̀n!

On Kúnlé Afọláyan’s new film…

First up, I am not comfortable with the title of the film. It should be Ìjọ̀gbọ̀n or Ìjàngbọ̀n and not Ìjọ̀gbọ̀n!

Also, Chaos – the English rendition of the film’s title is wrong. Chaos in Yoruba is synonymous with rúdudùru, ìdàrú, rògbòdìyàn.

Ìjọ̀gbọ̀n [Ìjàngbọ̀n] in Yoruba means trouble or worry in English and not chaos. The synonyms of Ìjọ̀ngbọ̀n [Ìjàngbọ̀n] are: ìyọnu and wàhálà.

Now back to the film itself. The plot is a well trodden path. Four Nigerian teenagers – Ruby Akubueze (Oby), Káyọ̀dé Ojúolápé Jr. (Jámíù), Fawaz Àìná (Ọmọọba) and Olúwaṣèyí Ẹ̀biẹ̀súwa (Rántí) accidentally find a pouch of uncut diamonds in the bush and decide to keep them.

Not too long, the owners of the diamonds come looking for them and the four teenagers find themselves in deep trouble (Ìjọ̀ngbọ̀n) involving several murders.

The cinematography is top notch and I love it. Compared with Aníkúlápó though, this film is under par. I dislike the use of Yoruglish by some of the actors.

The star of the film for me is the adorable Oby (Ruby Akubueze). Her performance is captivating. She shuns materialism and greed, the hydra-headed monster destroying our society today.

She teaches us the value of selflessness and the pitfalls of sudden wealth. This should be a great inspiration for our teenagers. Ruby Akubueze is 25 but she looks 15!

Yẹmí Ṣóladé (Chief Owónifáàrí) performs beautifully. He displays a no nonsense demeanor. His eloquent use of the Yoruba language is commendable.

Kábíyèsí (Bimbọ Manuel), Rev. Ṣàngódoyin (Sam Dede), Bánjọ (Fẹ́mi Branch), Mama Oby (Tana Adélànà), Brọda Kàsálí (Gabriel Afọláyan), Chidera (Àdùnńi Adé) and others all perform well.

Is Rántí a coward? Is Jámíu overbearing? What about Ọmọọba? What do you say?

Overall, a beautiful film showcasing the Yoruba society to the world.

Kudos to Kúnlé Afọláyan and his team.

LP Raises Concerns About INEC’s Efforts to Thwart Ogah’s Appeal

0

On Friday, the Labour Party’s leadership expressed concerns regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its alleged attempts to hinder their efforts to regain the mandate of their suspended House of Representatives candidate, Amobi Ogah.

This situation arose after a dispute between two INEC lawyers at the appellate court in Lagos.

The party has also appealed to INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, urging him to promptly investigate and address this issue.

INEC initially declared Ogah the winner of the Isiukwuato Umunneochi Federal Constituency election, with 11,769 votes, but the election was nullified by the National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal in Umuahia on September 6, citing non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

During a hearing at the Lagos Appeal Court on Thursday, confusion ensued when two legal practitioners claimed authority to represent INEC.

This led to the Labour Party leadership penning an open letter to INEC Chairman, titled “Open letter to INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, on the show of infamy and dishonor by the commission in election appeal held in Lagos,” pleading for a fair resolution of their candidate’s appeal.

The National Publicity Secretary of the LP, Obiora Ifoh, expressed their belief that this incident was a deliberate act by INEC to obstruct their efforts to reclaim Ogah’s mandate.

He emphasized the need for an investigation into the situation and called on INEC to maintain its integrity in light of the upcoming 2023 general elections.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) does not issue arrest warrants for individuals who have defaulted on loans

0

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has emphatically denied issuing arrest warrants for loan defaulters, refuting allegations made by certain loan companies. In an official statement posted on the Commission’s authorized platform, the EFCC clarified that they have never issued arrest warrants, as claimed by these companies.

According to the EFCC, some of these loan companies have been sending out documents containing lists of individuals supposedly on the Commission’s fabricated arrest list in an attempt to intimidate defaulters into repaying their loans.

The Commission strongly rebuked such practices and warned these companies to cease their fraudulent activities, asserting that the EFCC is prepared to take legal action against them.

The statement, titled ‘EFCC Does not Issue Arrest Warrant on Loan Defaulters,’ conveys, “The EFCC has been made aware of the dissemination of fabricated documents related to ‘Arrest Warrant Processing,’ ‘Loan Fraud Escalation,’ and other materials by certain loan companies.

These documents falsely attribute their threats against loan defaulters to the EFCC.

“The public is urged to exercise caution when encountering such claims, as it is a well-established fact that the EFCC does not issue arrest warrants for loan defaulters.

Loan companies attempting to associate the Commission with their loan recovery efforts must immediately cease such deceptive practices, as the EFCC is fully prepared to take legal action against them.

Legislative members of the Labour Party are avoiding Abure and preparing to acquire SUVs

0

Members of the Labour Party in the National Assembly have disregarded the advice of their National Chairman, Julius Abure, who discouraged them from participating in the acquisition of luxurious official vehicles planned for legislators.

Abure had expressed his disapproval of the National Assembly’s intent to purchase Sport Utility Vehicles worth N160 million for each lawmaker, deeming it insensitive and inappropriate given the country’s economic challenges.

He urged Labour Party lawmakers not to partake in such extravagant spending.

However, when questioned on Thursday about their stance on Abure’s recommendation, Ngozi Okolie, the representative for Delta Aniocha North and South, justified the necessity of the SUVs for their legislative duties, particularly regarding oversight functions.

He argued that while Abure criticized the economic situation, having an official vehicle for federal lawmakers was not extravagant but essential.

Okolie pointed out disparities between federal and state-level benefits for politicians and raised questions about whether Abure had provided any alternative means for them to perform their duties.

He also noted that it was more cost-effective to purchase these vehicles than to rent them whenever needed for oversight activities.

Additionally, Stainless Nwodo, representing Igbo Etiti and Uzo-Uwani constituencies in Enugu State, praised President Bola Tinubu for approving the vehicles, emphasizing that National Assembly members welcomed the SUVs as tools to benefit their constituencies.

He refuted the economic hardship argument, clarifying that the vehicles were for each constituency, not for personal use by lawmakers, and were essential for navigating poor roads while serving constituents.

Neda Imasuen, the lawmaker from Edo South Senatorial District, adopted a wait-and-see approach, indicating that he would make a decision once the vehicles arrived, emphasizing that the Labour Party’s representation was relatively small in the National Assembly, and the choices made by its members might not significantly impact the overall situation.

What has caused the Naira to plummet in value? – Former Minister Aganga shares insights

Former Finance Minister Olusegun Aganga asserted that the continued weakness of the naira is intrinsically linked to Nigeria’s heavy dependence on imports.

Speaking at the 3rd Adeola Odutola lecture during the 51st Annual General Meeting of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Aganga emphasized the necessity for Nigeria to bolster its production, not only for local consumption but also for export, in order to fortify the naira.

The naira’s value depreciated from approximately 450 per dollar to an average of 760 per dollar following President Bola Tinubu’s exchange reforms.

On Thursday, it further plummeted to 1045 per dollar in the parallel market.

Aganga criticized the logic of expending substantial resources to defend the naira while it continues to weaken, advocating instead for investments in genuine manufacturers and high-value product exporters, which could generate foreign income for Nigeria.

He called upon the government to accord the industrial sector the status of a national priority and provide it with comprehensive plans, policies, and financial support.

Aganga contended that every naira judiciously invested in the strategic industrial sectors can be recuperated and deliver substantial economic benefits, in stark contrast to the vast sums spent on subsidies, bailouts, the Agric Anchor Borrowers Programme, and refineries.
