What led to the cancellation of the scheduled indefinite strike has been explained by the President of the NLC

0

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, has addressed the decision of the organized labor to postpone its previously scheduled indefinite strike.

This strike was initially set to commence on Tuesday, October 3, due to issues such as the removal of petrol subsidy and disagreements over palliatives.

The indefinite strike was suspended for a period of 30 days after a memorandum of understanding was reached with the Federal Government (FG).

However, this suspension has led to criticism of the Labor Unions, with some accusing them of compromising with the federal government.

In response to these criticisms, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero explained in an interview with Vanguard that the Organized Labor chose to suspend the planned indefinite strike because the FG had met at least 90% of their demands through negotiations.

He emphasized that the primary goal of negotiations is to reach an enforceable and implementable agreement, making it unnecessary to proceed with the strike when most of their demands had been addressed.

Ajaero revealed that the labor unions and the FG had come to a reasonable consensus on various demands.

These included the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as an alternative to petrol, addressing the concerns of tertiary institution workers, initiating work at the Port Harcourt refinery, and increasing worker wages, among other matters.

He stressed the importance of signing an agreement to solidify the negotiated terms, ensuring their effectiveness and enforceability.

Sanwo-Olu mandates the removal of Jankara and Bombata markets situated in Lagos Island

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has issued an order for the demolition of Jankara and Bombata markets on Lagos Island, marking the beginning of a comprehensive regeneration project for the entire Lagos Island.

Additionally, Governor Sanwo-Olu has indicated that Pelewura Market, also located on Lagos Island, will undergo demolition after engaging in consultations with relevant stakeholders.

The governor revealed these plans during a Sunday inspection of the area, during which he also announced the scheduled completion of the Ilubirin Pumping Station by January.

This critical infrastructure project aims to combat the persistent issue of flooding in the area.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the need for strict enforcement of regulations, stating that illegal occupants of drainages would be removed, and the indiscriminate dumping of refuse would not be tolerated.

He also addressed the transformation of the market areas, specifying that Bombata and Jankara markets would be completely revamped with detailed design plans in place.

Regarding Pelewura Market, where many citizens are situated, the governor assured that adequate notice would be given, and collaboration with concessionaires and stakeholders would determine the timing of the demolition and evacuation.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also highlighted plans to address road infrastructure, involving the original contractor, Julius Berger, in rejuvenating Idimagbo Avenue, Odo-Giwa, and Adeniji-Adele Road.

He stressed the importance of changing the behavior of citizens, urging them to refrain from dumping refuse in drainage systems and promising a long-term transformation of the entire area from Idimagbo to Ebutero.

Furthermore, the governor provided updates on the Ilubirin Pumping Station project, stating that significant progress had been made in the construction, with an expected completion date of December or January.

This project aims to enhance drainage systems and mitigate flooding on Lagos Island by creating new drainage channels to efficiently direct water into the lagoon.

Kylie Jenner Removes Instagram Story Expressing Solidarity with Israel

0

Kylie Jenner initially shared a post on her Instagram story expressing support for Israel following an attack by Hamas over the weekend.

However, she swiftly deleted the post, and her recent Instagram feed is now filled with messages supporting Palestinians.

Many of her followers responded with images of the Palestinian flag and calls for “free Palestine.” Jenner had also shared a post from the account @StandWithUS, which stated, “now and always we stand with the people of Israel.”

Reports indicate that Jenner removed the post approximately an hour after posting it, but comments expressing pro-Palestinian sentiments continued to pour into her Instagram.

In response to the Hamas attack, Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, declared a state of “war” on Sunday and called for a robust military response, emphasizing that Israel was in a state of war rather than an operation or rounds of conflict.

Hamas launched a surprise rocket attack that resulted in the death of at least 600 Israelis and the injury of over 2,000 others.

They also took numerous hostages in Gaza, prompting the Israeli military to prepare for engagement.

Israel’s security cabinet likewise declared war, unlocking the authorization for “significant military activities,” as announced by Netanyahu’s office.

At the time of these events, Kylie Jenner’s team had not responded to requests for comments.

President Biden and other cabinet officials had condemned the attacks on Saturday while reaffirming the United States’ support for Israel.

The FG is set to interview N-Power consultants and strategize to create five million job opportunities

0

The Federal Government, on Sunday, provided further explanations for its decision to suspend the N-Power program.

It stated that the program had fraudulent beneficiaries, and some of its consultants were withholding participants’ funds.

As reported by Sunday PUNCH, over one million Nigerians lost their jobs due to the indefinite suspension of the N-Power program announced by Minister Betta Edu.

The program was initially established by former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to combat youth unemployment, providing beneficiaries with a monthly stipend of N30,000.

Akindele Egbuwalo, the National Programme Manager for N-Power, added more reasons for the suspension on Sunday, highlighting the presence of ghost workers in the program that needed to be removed.

Regarding concerns about the program’s consultants, Egbuwalo expressed, “Preliminary findings from our audit indicate that some consultants are retaining funds allocated to beneficiaries, even after their contracts ended in March 2023 without renewal.

This practice is condemned and will not be tolerated.

We are actively identifying those responsible, investigating why payments were not reaching the intended recipients, and recovering the funds to settle those owed.”

“We urge Nigerians to comprehend the reasons for the temporary suspension and investigation of the program.

Our goal is to restore trust in the program and improve its service to Nigerians.

It is essential to ensure that things are done correctly as we move forward,” Egbuwalo emphasized.

He also revealed that the ongoing restructuring and transformation efforts would expand the program’s reach to include beneficiaries aged 18-40, raising the previous age limit of 35.

Napoli has their sights set on Jesus as a potential replacement for Osimhen

0

Despite Victor Osimhen’s unwavering commitment to Napoli, the Serie A champions have reportedly pinpointed Arsenal’s striker, Gabriel Jesus, as a potential replacement for the Nigerian forward, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

Osimhen’s future at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona has become uncertain due to controversy stemming from Napoli’s TikTok account.

The club’s official account faced backlash for two posts seemingly mocking Osimhen, one poking fun at his penalty miss against Bologna and another comparing him to a coconut.

In response, Osimhen’s agent threatened legal action against the Serie A champions, who stopped short of offering an apology.

There has been speculation of the 24-year-old leaving Napoli at the end of the season, with some even suggesting a possible departure as early as January.

However, Osimhen, in a statement on social media, expressed his commitment to Napoli and its fans.

Nonetheless, doubts now linger about whether he will sign a new contract with the club, despite his current deal running until 2025. Notably, Chelsea and other clubs have shown interest in him.

Napoli’s president, Aurelio de Laurentiis, has publicly expressed confidence in Osimhen signing a new contract.

Nevertheless, reports suggest that Napoli is preparing contingency plans in case Osimhen departs in January or at the end of the season.

The report mentions that Gabriel Jesus is one of the potential targets, alongside Atletico Madrid’s Alvaro Morata and Lille’s Jonathan David.

Gabriel Jesus, who joined Arsenal from Manchester City in the summer of 2022, has been dealing with injuries but has managed to make 41 competitive appearances, tallying 14 goals and eight assists for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Morata, previously with Juventus, has had a strong start to the season with seven goals in eight games for Atletico.

Jonathan David has scored four times in 11 games this season and is also a target for AC Milan in addition to Napoli.

Sunday Igboho is released in Benin after a two-year period of captivity

0

Sunday Igboho, the prominent Yoruba nation advocate, has been granted his freedom by the authorities in Benin.

Igboho announced on Sunday that he is now legally permitted to depart from Cotonou, the capital of Benin, and return to Nigeria or travel to any other country in the world.

He expressed his intention to return to Nigeria soon, stating that he has met all the legal requirements associated with his bail from a few years ago.

This release comes after two years of legal proceedings in Benin.

Igboho initially drew attention when he declared the sovereignty of the Yoruba Nation in March 2021 and initiated a campaign to remove killer herdsmen and kidnappers from the South-Western states.

Subsequently, he called on Yoruba people living in Hausa/Fulani or Igbo territories to return to their homeland.

In July 2021, he fled Nigeria following a raid on his Ibadan residence by the Department of State Services (DSS), during which there was at least one fatality, and some of his property was damaged.

The DSS claimed to have discovered seven AK-47 rifles, pump-action guns, 5,000 rounds of ammunition, charms, and other weapons in his apartment during the operation.

However, this judgment was later overturned by the Court of Appeal in August 2022.

Igboho was subsequently apprehended at the Cardinal Bernardin International Airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic, while attempting to travel to Germany.

Efforts by the former President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to extradite him to Nigeria were unsuccessful.

Delivering my role was very hectic in Slum King

0

Nollywood Actor Tóbi Bakare has described himself as a self-driven fellow who is optimistic about being one of the greatest actors in Nollywood.

Tobi Bakre, the lead of Africa Magic’s new crime series, ‘Slum King’, on Saturday said the movie production was his most challenging project so far as an actor.

Bakre, a two-time Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) ‘Best Actor’ winner, disclosed this while speaking during the preview of “Slum King”, in Lagos.

He said that the production was hectic as he had to read through the Bible as his script and shoot for two months at a stretch, unlike every other movie he had featured.

“This is my most challenging project so far, the first time I was given a Bible to read as my script but I’m proud and confident to be part of this. Africa Magic, you created greatness, thank you.

“Delivering my role was very hectic in Slum King, this was a longer project, we shot for two months, every day doing a lot of work which was emotionally and mentally sapping but as a professional, I ensured I delivered my role appropriately.

“I acted as Edafe, a young guy who had to go through unfortunate circumstances, losing his parents and entire family at a very young age and life just changed in a twinkle of an eye,” he said.

Bakre described himself as a self-driven fellow who is optimistic about being one of the greatest actors in Nollywood.

Speaking on his work relationship with his colleague on the job, Olarotimi Fakunle, who acted as Bale, Bakre described Fakunle as a great and amazing actor.

“Olarotimi is a great actor, one of the best actors I have worked with to date. He is amazing and he is an open book, he is ready to teach and I feel even beyond acting, he should be a producer, director and lecturer when it comes to this space of acting.

“We had a brotherly interpersonal relationship, I learnt a lot from him and he is also humbly open to learn too,” he said.

Commenting on the morals the series relayed, Bakre said, “I’ve learnt a lot of life lessons stepping into the shoes of Maje, as we are all victims of our circumstances and what becomes important are the decisions we make when trying to get out of them.

“The people you see on the streets are also human beings, collectively, we can work together to build a better community for ourselves.

“And generally, we should all spread love and empathise with one another.”

Earlier, Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content, West Africa Channels, MultiChoice Nigeria, said that the first episode of the series would be aired on Oct. 8, on Africa Magic Showcase by 8.00p.m, after which it will be showcased every Sunday on DStv channel 151 and GOtv channel 12.

Tejumola described the script of the series as an amazing one as she commended the producer and the cast for their efforts in producing an outstanding series.

“We are incredibly excited to present this powerful and gripping drama that takes viewers on an emotional journey.

“It is all about showcasing the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity.

“The team has worked tirelessly on this project and it is a testament to the remarkable storytelling that MultiChoice is committed to delivering,” she said.

Also, Chichi Nworah, producer of the series, “Slum King”, said that the series was produced out of the quest to tell stories of where a lot of people come from, particularly the slums.

She said Slum King was conceived in 2021 and prepared for three years to come up with the series.

According to her, the series relays the story of how people move from high to low but not basically about crime.

“The production of Slum King was quite hectic, I fell sick all through the production process as well as the director, and the casts.

“We have been able to tell the story of how people in the ghettos have dreams but don’t eventually get such dreams actualised.

“After three years of labour, a true masterpiece has emerged. A big shout out to the dedicated team who invested countless hours of their time and effort breathing life into this project,” she said.

“Slum King,” the highly anticipated limited drama series from Africa Magic, created a buzz long before its official release,” she said.

Slum King is an intriguing story of Edafe ‘Majemijesu’ Umukoro, who witnessed the massacre of his family by armed robbers at age 11 – robbers, who had entered his family home because he unfortunately forgot to lock the front door.

Sad events force ambition on an indifferent Edafe, causing him to detest his lowly status and develop an appetite for power.

Trapped in the cycle of guilt and trauma, Slum King takes us on Edafe’s journey from a disturbed tout in the slums to become MAJE, the charismatic king of the slums.

Marie Van Brittan, The Black Woman Who Invented The Home Security Circuit

Marie Van Brittan Brown, born on January 7, 1922, was an African-American nurse and inventor from Queens, New York City. In 1966, at the age of 44, she came up with the brilliant idea to create a unique home surveillance device with a closed circuit television security system.

She and her husband, Albert L. Brown, applied for the patent and invented a system with a motorized camera that could show images on a monitor. That patent (#3,482,037) was eventually granted, and her invention went on to become a technological precursor to how modern day home security systems would be designed.

Brown’s invention had very unique features for the time; The motorized camera at the door could slide up and down to look out of four peepholes. Anything the camera captured would be displayed on a monitor. Her system also included a radio-controlled lock that would allow the front door to remotely unlocked, and an audio-video alarm system that could be used to see and communicate with whoever was at the door.

For her genius invention, which obviously contributed to the future of home security systems, Brown was given a prestigious award by the National Scientists Committee (NSC). But for the most part, her invention has gone unnoticed and undocumented by the mainstream media and literature.

Sadly, Marie Van Brittan Brown dièd on February 2, 1999 at the age of 77-years old.
