Labour urges the Federal Government to provide no advance notice prior to the upcoming strike

0

The Trade Union Congress announced on Saturday that the temporary suspension of the nationwide strike scheduled for October 1 is contingent upon the President Bola Tinubu-led administration fulfilling the conditions outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Federal Government and Organized Labor.

Furthermore, labor leaders rejected the governors’ assertion that they wouldn’t implement the MoU’s demands, citing the provision of palliatives for state civil servants and residents before the MoU was finalized.

Tommy Etim, the National Deputy President of the Trade Union Congress, conveyed these points during an interview in Abuja.

It’s important to note that both Organized Labor and the Federal Government had signed a 15-point agreement in the MoU, which was publicly disclosed on October 1, 2023.

Addressing concerns about governors failing to honor the agreement, Etim remarked, “That’s not feasible.

In any case, we’ve contacted our representatives in the states and sent letters to that effect.”

Regarding the progress made with the government, the labor leader stated, “The 30-day ultimatum we issued remains in effect.

We’ve given them ample time, and we believe they’re actively addressing the issues. Our decision to suspend the strike was a temporary one. Resuming a strike requires no further notice.

We’ve fulfilled our part, and now we await their response.

Sheikh Jassim of Qatar has decided to withdraw his offer to purchase Manchester United

0

Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani has decided to withdraw his bid to acquire Manchester United, as reported by the BBC.

Approximately a year ago, Manchester United’s board began exploring various strategic options to foster the club’s growth, which included the possibility of a complete sale.

Sheikh Jassim and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe emerged as the leading contenders after multiple rounds of bidding earlier this year.

However, the progress in this process has come to a standstill in recent months, despite mounting discontent among the fans directed at the current owners, the Glazer family.

The Glazers, who have owned the English football giant since a leveraged takeover in 2005 for £790 million ($961 million), significantly burdening the club with substantial debts.

Recent figures in March revealed that Manchester United’s debts have escalated to £970 million.

Nevertheless, the Glazers are reportedly holding out for an unprecedented sum in excess of £6 billion, which would constitute a world record fee for a football club.

Sheikh Jassim’s bid aimed to secure full control of Manchester United while promising to eliminate the club’s debt.

In contrast, Ratcliffe is purportedly open to acquiring a smaller stake in the club as a potential solution to break the ownership deadlock of the 20-time English champions.

Manchester United’s on-field performance has also diminished during the Glazers’ ownership.

The club has not clinched the Premier League title since the retirement of former manager Alex Ferguson in 2013, and their last UEFA Champions League victory dates back to 2008.

Currently, the team is positioned in 10th place in the Premier League and has experienced an unprecedented setback by losing their first two matches in the Champions League group stage, marking a historic downturn for the club

Movie Review: Ijogbon A Kunle Afolayan Film

Movie title: “Ijogbon”

Directed by: kunle Afolayan.

I’m going to be very biased with this review because I have been looking forward to this movie, when I saw the trailer on IG i screamed “what’s this beauty” . I was first attracted to the colour grading of the movie and in my head I was like “I need to meet the colourist”

I need to also commend whoever was behind the camera because the shots compositions and movements helped in the story telling. It made it feel like I was seeing the entire movie in real time.

The movie has its setting in Oyo and I want to think it was shot around or very close to the new film village that Kunle Afolayan Is cooking.

Few minutes into the movie I had nostalgia and I remembered my short schooling in Iganmode secondary school in Ogun state. I believe that people in their 30s and above who attended public schools Will be able to relate to the school scenes, the use of rims as bells and what it feels like to be schooling In remote areas while having to tame their big dreams.

When Oby, jamiu, Ranti and omo oba started tracking the tire tracks it gave this investigate type of feeling and when they found the diamonds it made it feel like they were on a treasure Hunt. The transition from following the car tracks to know where it came from to finding the diamonds is crazy.

The scenes were Jamiu and Ranti confronted their fathers stood out for me, I could tell that they have been bottling up for a very long time and they did let out their frustration. It would be nice if parents actually listen, like, listen to their children properly and train them to have a voice of their own and not impose things on them.

If we deep it most of us are like Jamiu and this “Japa syndrome” has been infused into our blood streams, we will go lengths to achieve our dreams of “japaing” at the detriment of others because that’s the only thing we can think of because of the present situation of the country.

Movie Review: ÌJỌ̀NGBỌ̀N, Our Mineral Resources A Curse or Blessing?

ÌJỌ̀NGBỌ̀N: Movie review

. . . a folklore that tells an African story of the SWstern people of Nigeria: Our over dependence on religion and prayer in decision making, the extreme quest to seek greener pasture (Japa syndrome) that is raging amongst youths all over, and the religion cum inter-tribal tolerance that characterized the SW as a people.

It of course explains how, as a result of greed, the abundant mineral resources that we are blessed with in Africa, have become a curse for us rather than blessing. How Yorubas hide important events and precious ideas under the guise of stories and tales. How

The lead characters, Ọmọ’ba, Jamiu, Ranti and Obym were excellent. Those dudes outdid themselves. Their youthful exuberance and inexperience marred a lifetime opportunity that could have turned their fortune around. Our inability to reach compromise in crucial times – a thing that has become a bane to our quest for greatness ruined their efforts.

I feel for Ranti, the overbearing attitude of Jamiu in spite of his wittiness is unacceptable. He is selfish. But Ranti is a coward. A typical Yoruba man who is always afraid to take decisions. Igbos are brave. The character of Obim alludes to it. In spite of being a lass, she was able to challenge her male friends and convince them in times of decision making.

Grand screenplay, a complete storyline. Kunle Afolayan is the Ọgá of moviemakers as far as Nollywood is concerned and arguably in Africa. He took us from the realm of epic Yoruba story to a modern narration of African tales. Ijogbon is a step above Anikulapo. But I wouldn’t agree with the title. A more suitable title would have been used instead of ‘Ijogbon’ because the story talks more about Diamond than anything Violence. A ‘Blood Diamond’ kind of…

Exclusive: My Entire Life Has Been From One Performance To Another – MisterRain

Babatunde Ojobaro, also known as MisterRain, is a talented comedian and actor who has successfully carved out a unique place for himself in the world of movies and comedy. In an exclusive interview with Ranks Africa, he provided us with valuable insights into his highly anticipated upcoming show, Mister Rain Unattached, which is set to take place later this month in Lagos, Nigeria.

During the interview, MisterRain shared his thoughts and plans for the show, giving us a glimpse into what audiences can expect.

Can you tell us a bit about your upcoming one-man comedy show in Lagos? What can audiences expect?

#MisterRainUnattached literialy means Mister Rain isn’t attached to anybody or no other comedian is attached to the event. This show is designed as a comedy special that allows a comedian perform for at least 60minutes uninterrupted.

In 2022 when I debuted the Mister Rain Unattached in Ibadan and consequently Lagos in August and October respectively, I performed for straight 90minutes and this year the timing has been moved up to 120minutes non stop hilarious comedy performance. This year also the bar has been raised high because other genres of entertainment has been creatively infused in the performance in a way they haven’t experienced in comedy shows before.

So yes, the audience can expect a wholesome unique experience and comedic adveture at the same time just the way the audience in Ibadan did in August this year.

How did you come up with the concept for your show? What inspired you?

The drive to always challenge myself, the drive to always attempt something different, the assurance that I always go far and beyond to further sharpen my skills were my inspiration.

I came up with the idea to start the one-man comedy show because I thought most comedy shows are now stereotyped and there’s a need to give our audience and fans more of us than they have seen, give them something different. I started this in Ibadan and became the first comedian in the city to do this. The success of that event in 2022 became the needed catalyst to fly it around cities in Nigeria.

What challenges have you faced in preparing for a one-man show, and how have you overcome them?

Truth is there’s hasn’t been too many challenges because, for the most part of my active career life, I have been a showbiz promoter, I have organized shows for people even outside entertainment, so organizing this is more a like a walk in the park for me but having to research, prepare, rehearse isn’t as easy as one will expect because you know everybody coming is coming for you and you want to hold them spell bound and laughing all through their stay.

Also when you have a good show the previous year, the pressure of having to make the next one better is a challenge one must face amd summount.

How do you plan to engage and connect with the audience during your persurmount.?

There’s a theory that’s called the “4th Stage” propounded by Prof. Wole Soyinka. I have worked on some of his works and I understand that theory enough to know that the best performance anybody can have is to seal the abyss of the 4th stage and get your audience involved and fully engaged.

The moment when the audience are performing and don’t realize they are performing, they are not just laughing but they are contributing to the laughter in the room without them knowing that’s what they are doing. In the theatre world where I have cut my teeth and solidify my feet properly, it is called the theatre of magic and the magic of theatre. So best believe that there’s a working plan to engage the audience to give them a fully wholesome laughter experience.

Are there any specific themes or topics that you will be exploring in your comedy show?

Oh yes, there are several themes that are societal and relatable by all standards featured in the 120mins long performance. The central idea “funny but true” is designed to pick issues from education, relationship, mental health issues, drug abuse, essence of friendship, betting hazards, feminism and some other issues and bring out the real situations on these matters albeit in a way people can laugh over it and still brood over the information I am giving them.

Can you share any funny anecdotes or memorable moments from your previous performances that have influenced your approach to this show?

My entire life has been from one performance to another, started out as a dancer, then a choreographer, an award winning Radio person, acting for stage and screen, teaching and facilitating… all these have constantly shaped how I approach every show I put up because my experiences are unique and bespoke to me and they form the basis of my shows and performances which is why my events are unique because they are original contents

What do you hope the audience will take away from your show? What kind of experience do you want to create for them?

This won’t be the first comedy show they have attended, but this will be the first comedy show they will attend to see what they wouldn’t have thought was possible. So one of the things they will take away is realizing that comedians can be very brilliant and intelligent. Another thing I can assure the audience is they will begin to see some issues in different perspective because I hope to change some perceptions.

How do you balance the fine line between pushing boundaries with your comedy and ensuring that it remains entertaining and enjoyable for all audience members?

The first questions I always ask myself when Curating events is why am I doing this, what do I hope to achieve? Also as a Radio person, I have known and practiced that you radio programme materials must contain 3 elements, it must inform, it must educate, ultimately it must entertain. I have transfered this skills to writing and creating my comedy materials. This balance, I have mastered so well over the years, it’s now easy to boast that my audience always and will continue to get the full dose

Are there any special surprises or guest appearances that audiences can look forward to in your show?

Yes, there is a special suprise, myself and the team are cooking up. Talks are in motion and we are hoping we will finalize in a couple of days.

Lastly, what message or advice do you have for aspiring comedians who are looking to create their own one-man shows?

Do not create a one-man show or a comedy special as we call it because people are now drifting towards that angle. There’s no rule that says that’s how they know you are a good comedian. You have to have built up for it over time and master the skill of not just making people laugh but also keeping their attention the whole time. It’s a skill, however anything is possible if proper preparation is made.

0

The coroner’s inquest, which is investigating the cause of singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, also known as Mohbad’s, death, has summoned controversial singer Abdulazeez Fashola, alias Naira Marley, as well as Owodunni Eletu, known as Sam Larry, and Owodunni Ibrahim, known as Primeboy, to appear before it on October 25, 2023.

During the inquest, Magistrate Sotobi Adedayo at the Candide Johnson Courthouse in Ikorodu, Lagos State, on October 13, 2023, directed the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department at Panti to ensure the presence of Naira Marley, Sam Larry, and Primeboy on the upcoming adjourned date of October 25, 2023.

Currently, Marley and Larry are being held at Panti.

The magistrate also stressed the importance of cooperation in the investigation to expedite the process of justice in the singer’s death.

He advised all interested parties not to contribute to any delays so that MohBad can finally be laid to rest.

Furthermore, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Muhammad Yusuf, who serves as the investigating police officer in the homicide section of the SCID, stated that their investigation did not provide conclusive evidence that Naira Marley assaulted Mohbad.

Similarly, there was no evidence linking Sam Larry and Naira Marley to Feyisayo Ogedengbe, the nurse who administered the injection to the deceased.

Mohbad passed away on September 12, and on October 6, after weeks of investigation, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, announced that the prime suspects in the singer’s death were the auxiliary nurse, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, who administered the injection, as well as his friend and fellow artiste, Ibrahim Owoduni, known as Prime Boy, and another friend, Ayobami Sadiq.

Owohunwa mentioned that 26 people were questioned, and five suspects had been identified, arrested, detained, and interrogated regarding their alleged roles in the sequence of events leading to the singer’s demise.

Ogedengbe administered three different injections, which are believed to have triggered the chain of events resulting in the singer’s death.

The suspended Attorney General of the Federation ignored the minister and authorized the signing of a financial statement totaling N26 trillion, as indicated in the report

0

The Federal Government’s 2019 financial statement of N26tn was unilaterally signed by a former Accountant General of the Federation, as revealed in an audit report.

This revelation occurred during the Senate Public Accounts Committee’s consideration of the audit report, chaired by Senator Ahmed Wadada.

In a 2019 report submitted to the National Assembly, the Auditor-General of the Federation pointed out that the then Accountant General had signed the document without the required counter-signature by the Minister of Finance, which was against financial regulations.

The Auditor-General’s office cited relevant provisions from the Financial Regulations to support this claim.

According to Paragraph 103 of the Financial Regulations, “The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria assigned to the Minister of Finance the responsibility for all financial matters of the government of the federation.”

Paragraph 105 of the Financial Regulations empowers the Minister of Finance to issue financial regulations applicable to various government offices.

This implies that the Minister of Finance is the Chief Executive Officer regarding government financial matters.

At the time, Ahmed Idris held the position of Accountant General of the Federation but was later suspended due to allegations of financial misconduct amounting to N109bn.

The audit report also noted that the consolidated financial statement was signed solely by the Accountant General of the Federation without indicating his FRC of Nigeria registration number, a component necessary for the approval of the CFS, in violation of existing regulations.

Furthermore, there was no signature with the FRC of Nigeria registration number of the Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning on the Consolidated Statement of Financial Position.

These discrepancies can be attributed to weaknesses in the internal control system during the consolidation process.

In response to the report, the acting Accountant General of the Federation, Toyin Madein, clarified that she was not in office at the time when the financial statement was signed.
