Rudeboy expresses his concerns over the increasing fuel expenses, and he expresses frustration over the monthly expenditure of N3 million on diesel

0

Renowned musician Paul Okoye, popularly known as Rudeboy from the Psquare duo, has voiced his deep concern regarding the severe economic hardships plaguing the nation, notably the surging prices of petroleum products.

The artist behind “Reason With Me” lamented how many years ago, he joyfully acquired his first car for a mere N120,000.

Yet today, he finds himself shelling out a staggering N3 million each month just for diesel.

Taking to his Instagram story, Rudeboy characterized the current economic climate as nothing short of “utter madness.

He extended his heartfelt sympathy towards the struggles endured by the less fortunate in these trying times, saying, “I purchased my first car for 120k naira years ago and I was immensely proud of that achievement… Now, I’m expending 3 million naira monthly on diesel alone… It’s complete madness. Only God knows the hardships the average person is enduring.

Negotiations to resolve the Hollywood actors’ strike have been temporarily halted

0

On Wednesday, discussions between Hollywood actors and studios regarding an ongoing strike came to an abrupt halt, dealing a significant blow to the hopes of a swift resolution to the crisis that has severely impacted the entertainment industry.

Key figures from major studios, such as Disney and Netflix, had been engaged in regular meetings with negotiators from the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) since last week.

This was in response to the SAG-AFTRA members’ decision to walk off film and TV sets in July.

In a statement released late Wednesday, the studios announced the temporary suspension of talks, prompting SAG-AFTRA to accuse them of employing “bully tactics” and disseminating “misleading information” about the negotiations.

The studios, represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), cited an insurmountable gap in their positions, stating, “After meaningful conversations, it is clear that the gap between the AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA is too great, and conversations are no longer moving us in a productive direction.”

Optimism had been growing as the AMPTP recently reached an agreement with Hollywood writers, effectively ending their parallel, lengthy strike.

Given the overlaps between the demands of SAG-AFTRA and the writers, there was hope that a deal with the actors could also be achieved swiftly.

However, this hope has diminished, with SAG-AFTRA accusing the studios of making unrealistic offers and misrepresenting negotiation proposals.

SAG-AFTRA expressed their frustration, stating, “We have negotiated with them in good faith, despite the fact that last week they presented an offer that was, shockingly, worth less than they proposed before the strike began.”

They accused the studios of using the same tactics as with the writers’ union, attempting to mislead their members and put pressure on their negotiators.

The entertainment industry and its workforce continue to suffer financial losses each day, as most film and TV production remains on hold until SAG-AFTRA’s demands are resolved.

In their statement, the AMPTP criticized the actors for making excessive demands, particularly regarding a share of revenues from successful streaming shows, which they claimed would cost over $800 million annually.

However, SAG-AFTRA argued that the AMPTP had intentionally inflated the proposal’s cost by 60 percent and had made substantial counteroffers that would cost companies less than 57 cents per subscriber each year.

The studios also accused SAG-AFTRA of rejecting wage increases that had been accepted by the writers’ and directors’ unions earlier in the year.

Both parties expressed a desire for productive negotiations to resume, while the actors’ union stressed their readiness to negotiate daily.

In addition to improved pay and greater transparency in streaming show profits, SAG-AFTRA raised concerns about the potential threat posed by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

They feared that AI could be used to replicate their voices and likenesses without consent or compensation, and they highlighted the studios’ proposal regarding AI as a sticking point in the negotiations.

Some smaller Hollywood studios have managed to resume film and TV productions under temporary waivers known as “interim agreements.”

Nevertheless, the actors’ union declared their intention to continue their strike, asserting that they had sacrificed too much to capitulate to the studios’ stance.

Uber and Bolt drivers urge the police to apprehend the individuals responsible for the attacks on their fellow members

The Amalgamated Union of app-based transporters in Nigeria is deeply distressed by the ongoing and brutal killings of its members in certain areas of the country.

This distressing situation has emerged in the wake of the alleged murders of three union members in Port Harcourt and another member in Galadimawa, Abuja, on a Wednesday.

According to an official statement released by the union on Thursday, the incident in Port Harcourt involved three of its members who were working on the Bolt app.

It appears to be a series of coordinated attacks that occurred between the hours of 7.30 pm and 10 pm on the same day.

The union reported that the attack resulting in the tragic death of a driver, Emmanual Daniel, took place while he was en route to pick up a passenger who had requested a ride. Tragically, Daniel was murdered, and his assailants also stole his vehicle.

In addition to this, Roland Asuru and John Okon were both fatally shot, and their cars were stolen by suspected robbers in separate incidents.

There were also reported unsuccessful attempts to steal cars belonging to members of the union in areas like GRA, CFC Roundabout, and Ekeme, as mentioned in the statement.

Furthermore, the statement detailed another horrific incident in Abuja, where a union member was brutally killed, and their car was stolen in the Galadimawa area of Abuja on the same Wednesday.

Expressing their deep concern over the recent spate of member killings, the union finds it tragic and unacceptable that, within a span of just two days, four of its members have lost their lives, and seven cars have been stolen.

These members were providing essential services to the public, and their deaths were preventable, had there been adequate security measures and intelligence to thwart these deadly attacks.

The statement continued by highlighting the union’s efforts to improve security by calling on app companies to require passengers to provide national ID information before using the service.

Regrettably, these pleas have fallen on deaf ears, leading to the loss of lives without justice or compensation.

As a registered trade union with the duty to protect its members from such preventable circumstances, the union urgently calls on the Federal Government to instruct the Ministry of Transport, Science, and Digital Economy, or any relevant authority, to mandate app-based companies to collect passengers’ National Identification Numbers (NIN) before allowing them to book rides.

The union also appeals to the Governor of River State, the FCT Minister, and the police to initiate investigations and bring these ruthless criminals to justice.

They further request adequate compensation for the families of the deceased from both the government and the app companies.

In conclusion, the union extends its sympathy to the grieving families and urges its members to remain vigilant during the festive season and beyond.

Unfortunately, as of the time of this report, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, has not responded to phone calls.

Family-owned businesses in Nigeria annually contribute $200 billion to the country’s economy, representing a significant 23.8 million businesses

Stakeholders have emphasized the importance of family businesses not only in their significant annual contribution of nearly $200 billion to the nation’s economy but also in their role as employers of millions of individuals in the country.

These sentiments were expressed at a recent event sponsored by First Bank in Lagos, titled “My Family My Business.”

The event aimed to promote effective business succession and sustainable planning, ultimately ensuring the preservation of these businesses for future generations.

Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), highlighted that numerous family businesses have successfully transcended generations, creating substantial job opportunities and playing a pivotal role in the ongoing economic development of advanced economies.

She pointed out that family-owned organizations, like the Ibru family, constitute 60 percent of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Nigeria, collectively contributing over 50 percent to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Oduwole emphasized that Nigeria’s 23.8 million family businesses play a vital role in employment and the economy, underlining the importance of ensuring their sustainability for future generations. She also noted that globally, 150 multi-generational businesses employ over 30 million individuals and generate a combined annual revenue of $9 trillion.

In support of family businesses, she expressed a commitment to making Nigeria an even more conducive environment for them to start and grow their businesses across generations.

Idowu Thompson, the Group Executive of Private Banking and Wealth Management at FirstBank, stressed the need for the next generation to become involved in family businesses to ensure their continuity, given their substantial contributions to the nation’s GDP.

He emphasized the value of the next generation gaining diverse experiences and knowledge outside the core family business, including financial literacy and moral guidance.

Sam Abu, the Country Senior Partner at PwC Nigeria, highlighted the global dominance of private businesses, where the top one percent of households possess 43 percent of global wealth.

In Nigeria, the top 100 billionaires collectively hold $68 billion in wealth, with the top three family businesses having a market capitalization exceeding $20 billion.

Abu pointed out that only 38 percent of the next generation is currently involved in family businesses, with a mere 28 percent participating on the management board.

He emphasized the necessity of increasing these statistics to ensure the sustainability of family businesses in the face of economic challenges.

Abu also outlined key factors affecting the success and longevity of family businesses in Nigeria, including inadequate succession planning, limited trust among customers, employees, stakeholders, and family members, as well as the importance of addressing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues for overall success.

He concluded by underscoring the pivotal role of family businesses in driving economic prosperity in Nigeria, with the government’s responsibility lying in maintaining a conducive business environment and essential infrastructure for their continued success.

The Navy apprehends a wooden vessel carrying illicit goods in Lagos

The patrol team of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT successfully apprehended a wooden fishing boat loaded with bags of rice in the Agbara creeks of Lagos State during a routine patrol at 5:30 a.m. on October 11.

This achievement was made possible with the assistance of the state-of-the-art Maritime Domain Awareness Facility.

Commander NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Kolawole Olumide Oguntuga, reported that upon spotting the patrol team, the boat’s occupants hastily abandoned their vessel and fled.

The patrol team promptly secured the boat, which was taking on water, and unloaded a total of 44 bags of parboiled rice.

Following established protocols, the 44 bags of rice were transported to the NNS BEECROFT base and handed over to officials from the Nigeria Customs Service for further necessary actions.

The Nigerian Navy is committed to enforcing customs laws and supporting government policies, including the empowerment of small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) for economic growth.

The Navy’s actions in confiscating contraband, particularly preventing the importation of foreign rice into the country, will undoubtedly contribute to the efforts of local farmers in generating revenue to alleviate poverty and food insecurity, ultimately fostering economic prosperity.

Under the leadership of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, the Nigerian Navy remains steadfast in its mission to combat all forms of maritime crimes, thus enhancing national security and stability.

Numerous individuals are feared to have lost their lives in a devastating blaze that engulfed fuel tankers and vehicles along the Ijora-Apapa road

0

Last night, yet another tragedy unfolded in Lagos, as an unspecified number of fuel tankers and vehicles were consumed by a massive fire in the Ijora-Apapa area of the state. The exact count of casualties remains unknown at this time.

According to an eyewitness, the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. As of the time of the report, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and other emergency responders had not yet arrived at the scene of the fierce blaze.

Disturbing videos circulated on social media, depicting panicked individuals attempting to contain the fire’s spread in the densely populated vicinity.

In a subsequent statement, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident, disclosing that they were actively involved in firefighting operations at Costain, near Ijora 7-Up.

A tanker fire was raging at the Lagos Quadrapont Bridge by the National Arts Theatre, Iganmu.

Both the Sari Iganmu and Ilupeju fire brigades were collaborating to subdue the unrelenting fire. Further updates were promised.

Earlier in the day, a harrowing incident took place as a fuel-laden tanker overturned and pinned a 14-seater bus owned by a passenger transport company on the Otedola Bridge in the Berger area of the state.

This unfortunate event prompted local residents to siphon fuel, despite the immense dangers involved in doing so.

Reportedly, the large vehicle lost control while transporting diesel from Lagos to the Capital Oil Filling Station, situated along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, significantly disrupting traffic.

Emergency response teams, including the Lagos State Fire Service, were promptly on the scene to extinguish the flames and prevent a potential catastrophe.

The Lagos State Fire Service confirmed the incident via their official handle, indicating that they were addressing a fuel spill from a 33,000-liter tanker.

The same tanker had trapped the 14-seater company bus, but thankfully, all three occupants were safely evacuated without injuries or fatalities.

In a regrettable turn of events, despite public safety campaigns discouraging such actions, opportunistic individuals were observed attempting to siphon spilled fuel, impeding the ongoing rescue efforts.

Lagos takes action to clear structures encroaching on Lekki’s drainage setbacks

0

The Lagos State government has initiated the removal of structures and shanties located in the setbacks of drainage channels at Lekki Phase 2 and the Ikota Drainage channel.

They are firm in their stance that any unlawful activities will not be tolerated.

This demolition effort is aimed at ensuring that all buildings and shanties that have encroached upon the drainage channels, thereby causing flooding in the area and neighboring communities, are cleared.

The demolition process is taking place in the upscale Lekki areas, specifically on Mobil road and in the Gedegede community.

This action follows the expiration of numerous contravention notices that were served to property owners, who disregarded these notices.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, speaking on behalf of the Sanwo-Olu administration, emphasized that this demolition is a strong statement of their commitment to restoring law and order.

Wahab, represented by Mahmood Adegbite, the Director of Drainage Enforcement and Compliance, pointed out that the government began issuing contravention notices as early as 2000 when these structures were still in their foundation stages.

Despite numerous suggestions from the government to prevent flooding, the property owners were uncooperative, even going so far as to fill the setbacks with sand in preparation for further construction.

Adegbite stressed the role of both natural forces and human actions in causing flooding.

He mentioned that one of the contributing factors is building on floodplains and within the designated right of way for drainages.

The approved right of way is 15 meters, but due to the high-density nature of the area, it had been reduced to 10 meters.

Property owners not only built within this right of way but also obstructed the waterway, reducing it from 15 to a mere three meters.

The drainage channel extends approximately four kilometers, and after the demolition, the government plans to ensure its proper maintenance, including dredging and widening.

Adegbite urged all prospective property owners to cooperate with the government and seek guidance before embarking on any construction projects to avoid future disputes.

In conclusion, this action serves as a warning to others who may have engaged in similar activities in different locations.

It emphasizes that actions have consequences, and the government is committed to upholding the law and order for the greater good of the majority.

The police have issued summonses to five officers in connection with a confrontation involving a motorist in the area of Ikorodu

0

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has called in five officers from the Lagos State Command for questioning regarding a confrontation they had with a motorist in the Ijede area of Ikorodu on Wednesday.

This action was confirmed by Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos Police, in an official statement.

The officers, who are part of the Area N Command in Ijede, Ikorodu, have been summoned to appear in Abuja for further inquiry and appropriate measures.

Hundeyin disclosed on a platform, previously known as Twitter, that preliminary findings indicate that the driver of a red Toyota Corolla with the license plate JJJ685GD was seen leaving a gas station, going against the flow of traffic.

The police officers attempted to halt the driver, but upon noticing them, the Corolla driver reversed into the gas station.

It is alleged that the scratches on the car and the cracks on the windshield occurred when the Corolla hit a parked trailer while in reverse.

The Lagos Police spokesman noted that the five officers found themselves in a tense situation as an angry crowd gathered, and in an effort to prevent further escalation, they left the scene.

Hundeyin mentioned that a comprehensive investigation is being initiated to determine the extent of the officers’ unprofessional behavior.

He urged the vehicle’s driver and any witnesses to provide valuable information through various channels, whether in person or electronically, to assist in the investigation.

Hundeyin assured the public that updates on the progress of the police’s investigation will be made available.

A Lagos-based educator secures the prestigious African Union continental award

In Lagos State, Adeola Adefemi, a dedicated educator, emerged as the victor of the prestigious African Union (AU) Continental Teacher Prize for the current year.

This remarkable announcement was made by Wodon Quentin, the Director of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), responsible for the International Institute of Capacity Building in Africa, and it coincided with the celebration of Teachers’ Day.

This accomplishment is particularly significant as it follows closely on the heels of two other Lagos teachers who were shortlisted as among the top 50 finalists for the Global Teacher Prize merely two weeks earlier.

Adefemi, who is no stranger to accolades, imparts her knowledge in English Language at Keke Senior High School in Agege, located in Education District 1 of the state.

Last year, she had already claimed the title of Best Teacher in Lagos State, an achievement that was celebrated and rewarded by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu with a brand-new SUV.

Additionally, she clinched the Presidential Best Teacher Prize in Nigeria and received yet another SUV from the Federal Government.

Notably, Adefemi’s achievements extend beyond the national level, as she was also honored with the 2020 Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Award.

Her recent win of the AU Continental Teacher Prize brought her an award plaque, a certificate of recognition, and a cash prize of $10,000.

It’s worth mentioning that, thus far, only one other Nigerian teacher, Olalekan Adeeko from Ogun State, had been able to secure the AU Teacher Prize, which he accomplished in 2020.

This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon a maximum of eight teachers annually who have exhibited exceptional dedication to their students across the different regions of the African continent.

The AU Teacher Prize plays a pivotal role in elevating the visibility and status of educators in Africa at all levels, ultimately serving to promote teaching as a highly respected profession.

It stands as a testament to celebrating and encouraging outstanding teachers across the continent.

The African Union recognizes that the stature of teachers in Africa is integral to achieving the vision laid out in Agenda 2063, which revolves around integration, peace, and prosperity throughout the continent.

Furthermore, the commission emphasizes that this award not only serves as a symbol of deep respect for teachers and the teaching profession but also raises the profile of educators, inspiring the most promising candidates to pursue a career in teaching.
