BusinessDay recognizes and celebrates the exceptional achievements of 25 exemplary CEOs

BusinessDay, Nigeria’s premier business intelligence newspaper, recently celebrated and acknowledged inspirational chief executives and their outstanding companies in 2023.

In this year’s installment of the BusinessDay Top 25 CEOs, the publication recognized 25 Chief Executive Officers and Managing Directors from various companies listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX) for their remarkable financial achievements and significant contributions to their respective industries.

The event, held in Lagos, commenced with the recognition of the following five awardees: Tope Smart, the Group Managing Director of Nem Insurance and a board member of NEM Asset Management Limited; Chibuike Lawrence Achigbu, Chairman and CEO of Chimons Group; Jane Kimemia-Nechi, CEO of Optiva Capital Partners; Emmanuel Okeleji, Co-founder and CEO of SeamlessHR; and Munachimso Ogueke, CEO of OneLiquidity.

The prestigious awards also went to Niyi Toluwalope (Awosope), MD/CEO of eTranzact International Plc; Olabisi Shakirat Ogunwale, CEO of Abulesowo Realtors; Akin Akinfemiwa, CEO of Geregu Power Plc; Moruf Oseni, Managing Director/CEO of Wema Bank Plc; and Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Fidelity Bank Plc.

The list of awardees continued with names like Nnamdi Okonkwo, Group Managing Director of FBN Holdings Plc; Eddie A. Efekoha, Group Managing Director & CEO of Consolidated Hallmark Insurance Plc; Julius Dediare Rone, CEO of UTM Group; Julius Oyedemi, CEO/MD of PWANPLUS; and Michael Tawadrous, Founder of Vava Furniture Limited.

The final group of esteemed awardees included Roger Thompson Brown, CEO of Seplat Plc (represented by Samson Ezugworie, COO Seplat Energy Plc); Ezekiel Egboye, Founding Executive and Chief Operating Officer at Rack Centre; and Jeremiah Mayowa, CEO of Jerold.

These prestigious awards were presented to the deserving recipients by notable figures such as Bashorun J.K Randle, Chairman and CEO of JK Randle Professional Services, former Chairman of KPMG, and former President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, as well as Frank Aigbogun, Publisher of BusinessDay Media Ltd, among other dignitaries.

The underlying concept of the Top 25 CEOs initiative was to recognize and applaud managing directors whose companies excelled in their respective industries.

The selection criteria included factors like share price appreciation and sustained growth in profit after tax (PAT).

Despite operating in challenging economic conditions, these CEOs demonstrated their prowess by implementing innovative strategies, exceptional plans, and invaluable resources to guide their organizations through turbulent times and emerge successfully into a period of economic stability,” noted Aigbogun.

In recognition of their substantial contributions to their businesses and the broader Nigerian economy, BusinessDay honored these accomplished individuals.

Since its inception in 2014, this award has become a significant benchmark for evaluating the performance of Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and the performance of stocks on the NSE in the capital markets.

Amusan Secures Her Third Consecutive Diamond League Trophy with a Victory in 2023

Oluwatobiloba Ayomide “Tobi Express” Amusan secured victory in the women’s 100-meter hurdles at the Diamond League event held in Eugene, Oregon, USA, on Sunday evening.

She triumphed in a thrilling race, crossing the finish line in a remarkable 12.33 seconds, claiming her third consecutive Diamond League title.

The Diamond League, renowned for its elite track and field competitions, comprises fourteen of the most prestigious invitational athletic meetings globally. It ranks among the top-tier one-day competitions in World Athletics.

It’s worth recalling that in 2021, Amusan set an African record with a time of 12.42 seconds at the Weltklasse Zürich event, earning her a gold medal. In 2022, she successfully defended her title with a time of 12.29 seconds.

Despite a provisional suspension by the Athletics Integrity Unit due to three whereabouts failures, which was lifted just hours before the World Championships in Budapest, “Express” delivered a stellar performance in Eugene, where she had set the world record’s fastest time of 12.12 seconds the previous year.

Notably, Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold and silver medalists, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn and Kendra Harrison (a former world record-holder), secured second and third place, respectively, in the competition.

Their initial aim was simply to find an escape from their village, but instead, they find themselves ensnared in a perilous web.

“Ijogbon” delves into the shared human experiences, coloured by unique cultural backgrounds and belief systems. The film also shares a poignant portrayal of the aspirations and challenges faced by rural teenagers in pursuit of a brighter future, even if it means resorting to a daring “Japa” (emigration from the country).

Well, we’ll have to wait until October 13 for it to premiere on Netflix.

Jimmy Odukoya Named Senior Pastor of The Fountain of Life Church

Pastor Jimmy Odukoya has assumed the position of the new senior pastor at The Fountain of Life Church. This announcement was made during the Sunday service held at the church’s headquarters in Lagos on September 17th.

Pastor Rotimi Okpaise disclosed that the late Taiwo Odukoya had already communicated his succession plans to the Board of Trustees before his passing. The Board unanimously elected Jimmy as the new senior pastor and also appointed him as the board chairperson.

Taking on the significant responsibility left by his father, Pastor Jimmy is prepared to lead the congregation with the same fervor and commitment. This transition follows the heartfelt passing of Pastor Taiwo Odukoya in August, creating a void that Jimmy is determined to fill.

Pastor Jimmy will be joined in this new role by none other than Associate Pastor Tolu Odukoya-Ijogun.

In a letter dated September 7, 2023, Deputy Secretary to Cabinet Dr Oliver Kalabo informed Lungu that his request to travel to South Africa had not been granted.

Electricity distribution companies are set to recommence the distribution of prepaid meters as part of the Meter Assets Provider program this week, as disclosed during a virtual stakeholders’ forum by Morenikeji Amosun, the Head of the Metering Team at Ikeja Electric.

Amosun reported the arrival of a new batch of meters under the program, with deployment beginning soon. He also mentioned that the company would prioritize clearing the backlog of older orders placed approximately two to three months ago before addressing new orders.

Furthermore, customers who had paid the previous prices set by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission would receive their meters without any additional charges, while new orders would be subject to the updated meter prices.
