A Review of the movie “Jagun-Jagun: The Warrior”

By

Timilehin Ogunsulire

First, Jagun Jagun means “warrior” in the Yoruba language and I have to mention that I loved the movie. The use of words, the perfect display of the African culture and tradition, the effects, the costumes, the lightening, everything was amazing. Femi Adebayo did a great job.

The 2-hour, 15 minutes long drama is worth watching and I dare say, Femi Adebayo truly surpassed his last movie, King of Thieves (Agẹṣinkólé), in every ramification.

I loved the storyline, the prowess of the actors most especially the Antagonist, Ogundiji who played the godfather role in the prominent kingdoms in Yorubaland (as portrayed in the movie), is something to be commended. The interplay between Godfatherism and the role of the antagonist is subtly unravelled in the scene where the rulers gather to prepare for a ceremony. They playfully mock each other by saying they all took kingdoms that were not entitled to them with Ogundiji’s help. This, in my opinion perfectly reflects the greed and thirst for power in Nigeria and the world at large.

Second, the movie had a major message that it preached towards its end to all Nigerian viewers, especially youths, to stop allowing power-hungry politicians to use them for their dirty work while they keep their children safe.

The only flaw I saw in the movie, is the fighting style portrayed. From my knowledge of Yoruba wars and warfare drawn from major literature on the subject, Yorubas dont fight like Romans. He portrayed the movie as a roman empire classic movie.

According to major accounts of Yoruba wars two commanders will face themselves and chant incantations till one commander overwhelms the other and then a fight will ensue. See reference below.

The movie also had interesting twists that could not be easily predicted by the viewer.

In all, Jagun Jagun is a production that is sure to wow👏.

From me, it is an 8/10.

JAGUN JAGUN: A Cinematic Masterpiece That Surpasses the Hype.

JAGUN JAGUN is a movie that not only lives up to the hype but surpasses it in every aspect. From its captivating storyline to its powerful performances, this cinematic masterpiece offers viewers an incredible cinematic experience that is worth every minute. It will be very difficult to blink when you start to watch this epic movie.

One of the standout aspects of JAGUN JAGUN is its ability to teach important lessons through the art of war. The movie seamlessly weaves together epic battles, thrilling action sequences, and deep-rooted cultural references to convey crucial insights about history, love, leadership, heritage, and betrayal. The film holds a mirror to society, reminding us of the impact of good leadership and the dire consequences of bad leadership.

I don’t mean to be culturally sentimental, but you’ll understand my points above and the movie in general if you understand Yoruba and you choose to watch this movie in its finest Yoruba version. I also admit that the subtitles are not up to standard and didn’t match with some characters and actions in the movie.

OGUNDIJI OOOOOOOOO… OKUNRIN OGUN🤺

The attention to detail in JAGUN JAGUN is remarkable, as it beautifully captures the essence of a bygone era while also providing thought-provoking commentary on power and slavery. Through its rich visuals and meticulous set design, the movie takes us on a journey that immerses us in the cultural tapestry of the time, enhancing our understanding of the characters’ struggles and triumphs.

Beyond its visual impressiveness, JAGUN JAGUN is also layered with an abundance of suspense, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats throughout the film. From unexpected plot twists to complex character dynamics, the movie keeps viewers engaged and empathetic toward the central character’s quests. Who would have thought that OGUNDIJI adopted daughter was AGEMO? That twist was outstanding 🤌

Another important lesson in the JAGUN JAGUN film is profound messages about knowing when to stop. The film skillfully delves into the emotional and moral conflicts faced by the characters, highlighting the importance of recognizing one’s limits and the consequences of unchecked ambition. OGUNDIJI exceeded his limit and he paid dearly for it.

Ultimately, JAGUN JAGUN manages to strike a balance between entertainment and education. It not only provides a thrilling and immersive experience but also leaves viewers reflecting on the larger themes and lessons it imparts. This film will live rent-free in my head forever.

Kudos to Femi Adebayo and every participant on set for giving us this masterpiece 👏

“Boko Haram expresses determination to regain territories reclaimed by military forces.”

Zagazola Makama, a security analyst and counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad region, revealed this information in a video shared on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The terrorists have also issued threats against the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), referring to them as “Yan Red Cross” and accusing them of collaborating with the military to attack the terrorists in their hideouts.

A member of the armed group stated in the Hausa language: “We want to make it clear that we are back to reclaim the territories we lost to unbelievers.

As for you, Red Cross, you might be happy because they supplied you with weapons, but understand that you cannot prevail against Islam.

We rely on the strength of Allah, and with his power, we will triumph.”

In a related incident, Abbas Tajudeen, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, condemned the killing of two individuals during a bandit attack in the Kofar Gayan area of Zaria, Kaduna State.

The bandits entered the area, killing two people and attempting to abduct others, but their kidnapping efforts were unsuccessful.

Abbas, who represents Zaria Federal Constituency, emphasized the importance of safeguarding the lives of Nigerians and called on security forces to enhance their efforts in protecting lives and property.

He deemed the recent killings, occurring shortly after the collapse of parts of Zaria Central Mosque, as unfortunate, barbaric, and reprehensible.

Abbas urged for a thorough investigation into the heinous act to identify those responsible.

Furthermore, the Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) has urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in Zamfara State to address the escalating incidents of kidnapping and killings.

The coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), focused on promoting good governance in the North, expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in Zamfara over the past two months.

In a statement from Kaduna, the Coordinator of DWI and its affiliates, Muhammad Sanusi, lamented the disturbing pattern of violence by bandits since June, which has led to alarming instances of rape, displacement, kidnappings for ransom, and loss of lives.

The situation has grown dire, with the state capital, Gusau, on the brink of being completely overrun by bandits.

SERAP has filed a lawsuit against Akpabio and Abbas for their alleged intention to allocate N110 billion towards purchasing bulletproof vehicles and other items.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken legal action against Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, in the Federal High Court of Lagos.

This action is in response to their alleged unjust scheme to allocate N40 billion for the purchase of 465 luxury and bulletproof vehicles for members and top officials, as well as N70 billion designated as ‘palliatives’ for new members.

This lawsuit follows remarks made by Akpabio, who revealed that holiday allowances were deposited into senators’ bank accounts, even as some Nigerians continue to grapple with severe poverty.

In the filed suit, identified as number FHC/L/CS/1606/2023 and submitted last Friday, SERAP seeks an order of mandamus to compel Akpabio and Abbas to review and minimize the expenditures.

Additionally, the organization aims to prevent Akpabio and Abbas from receiving the funds until a comprehensive assessment of the financial impact on the 137 million impoverished Nigerians is conducted in the public’s interest.

SERAP is also pursuing an order of mandamus to require Akpabio and Abbas to amend the Supplementary Appropriation Act 2022, reducing the National Assembly’s budget by N110 billion to align with the current economic circumstances in the country.

The organization contends that if these requests are not granted, lawmakers would continue to allocate and spend the N110 billion, thereby perpetuating a situation rife with conflicts of interest and self-serving actions.

SERAP underscores the ethical violation committed by National Assembly members, who have increased their budget and utilized it to enhance their personal lifestyles.

According to SERAP, while N70 billion is designated as ‘support allowance’ for 306 new legislators, only N500 billion is allocated for 12 million impoverished Nigerians as palliatives.

Furthermore, N40 billion is designated to procure 465 SUVs and bulletproof vehicles for members and top officials.

The lawsuit, represented by SERAP’s legal representatives, Kolawole Oluwadare and Ms.

Blessing Ogwuche, argues that the proposed N110 billion expenditure represents a fundamental violation of both constitutional and international human rights obligations.

Currently, no specific date has been set for the hearing of this lawsuit.

“Holiday allowance’ holds no unique status; rather, it is our rightful entitlement.”-Ali Ndume

During an interview with BBC Hausa, Ali Ndume, the Senate Chief Whip, clarified that the ‘holiday allowance’ disclosed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on live TV was simply their regular entitled leave grant, and not anything extraordinary.

Ndume emphasized that this practice is well-known, stating that employees are given such grants when going on leave.

He expressed disappointment in Akpabio for creating a misconception that senators were receiving unusually large sums of money.

He remarked that receiving a standard N2 million allowance as a senator is not a significant issue.

Ndume warned that if Akpabio continues with such statements, they are prepared to take serious action against him.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio had inadvertently revealed the ‘holiday allowance’ during a speech to his colleagues before their annual recess.

He mentioned that the Senate clerk had disbursed a token to enable lawmakers to enjoy their holidays.

Realizing his mistake on live TV, Akpabio retracted his statement.

However, his remarks ignited outrage among many Nigerians who criticized the lawmakers for seemingly disregarding the concerns of the citizens.

Currency Dilemma: Marketers Suggest N720/litre Amidst Fuel Import Suspension

Oil marketers have signaled that the cost of petrol, known as Premium Motor Spirit, could increase to a range of N680 to N720 per liter in the coming weeks if the dollar continues trading at N910 to N950 in the parallel market.

They revealed that the scarcity of foreign exchange is causing delays in importing petrol.

This warning follows the recent crossing of the N900 per dollar threshold, with the naira reaching over 945 per dollar on the parallel market.

Oil dealers explained that the official forex window provided by the CBN remains illiquid, hindering the required $25 million to $30 million for petrol importation. Industry leaders have urged the Federal Government to intervene in this crisis.

The fluctuations in forex are now driving petrol prices, making it likely for an increase soon.

Government grants official authorization to 154 digital money lending entities, paving the way for a diverse financial landscape.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has unveiled a comprehensive list of 154 fully authorized digital lenders licensed to function within the country’s borders.

This announcement comes in the wake of a significant overhaul within the digital money lending sector, following reports of sustained harassment endured by Nigerians from these lenders.

Moreover, 40 other digital lenders have been granted conditional approval, while an additional 20 have been placed under close scrutiny on the commission’s watch list.

Furthermore, nine apps have been officially delisted from the approved roster.

Highlighting the regulatory efforts, the Commission recently urged Google to remove 18 digital lending apps from the Play Store due to their unacceptable conduct.

The proactive measures have led to a refined selection of approved digital lenders, contributing to a safer and more secure environment for borrowers.

It is also noteworthy that four entities, including Fastcredit Limited, Greenbond Finance Company Limited, Baines Microfinance Bank Limited, and Ekondo Microfinance Bank Limited, have been granted licenses by the Central Bank of Nigeria, reinforcing the broader efforts to establish a well-regulated digital lending landscape.

Within this context, it is important to mention that only digital money lenders that have successfully registered under the Limited Interim Regulatory Framework and Guidelines for Digital Lending 2022 are permitted to conduct operations within the country.

This concerted effort ensures that the digital lending ecosystem remains compliant with set standards, safeguarding the interests of Nigerian borrowers.

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has urged Christians, particularly members of his congregation, to offer prayers to avert new conflicts, both within and beyond the nation’s borders.

He encouraged those who advocate for peace in all segments of society to stand and fervently pray, saying, “Let us entreat our heavenly Father for mercy upon Nigeria, especially for the sake of us, His children.

I implore each one of you to engage in prayer, for God’s answers to our supplications remain steadfast.

Do not lose heart, for a brighter tomorrow is ahead.

Stay focused and undeterred. Nigeria continues to rely heavily on our collective prayers.”

Adeboye also urged his congregation to pray against the malevolent activities orchestrated by the devil in the nation.

Additionally, he shared exciting news about the upcoming month’s Holy Ghost Service, which will be dedicated to those who are seeking divine intervention for fertility.

He expressed his anticipation for an abundance of twins, triplets, and more, highlighting that God’s blessings are boundless and never limited by the size of the cup.

“DHQ refutes having received a request for a coup.”

The military high command categorically denies having received any request to overthrow the democratic government system within the country.

On Friday, the Defence Headquarters expressed strong disapproval of remarks urging the Armed Forces to intervene in the democratic process due to allegations of inadequate welfare for troops across the services.

However, in a statement released on Sunday by Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, the DHQ clarified that there had been no communication or request received by the military to assume control of the government.

The statement emphasized, “The Defence Headquarters is deeply concerned about false and unsettling reports circulating on social media, twisted to imply that the Armed Forces of Nigeria were approached to bring about a change in leadership within the country.”

“We want to firmly reiterate that at no point did the Armed Forces of Nigeria receive or issue such a declaration to anyone or any group.

We believe that this statement has been fabricated by individuals with ill intentions towards the nation. It is clearly the malicious imagination of a few who are dissatisfied with the progress and welfare of our beloved country.”

“The AFN wholeheartedly supports democracy and remains steadfast in its allegiance to His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The military is fully prepared and willing to uphold the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Brig. Gen. Gusau also revealed that security agencies have initiated a search for those responsible for spreading the false report.

“We strongly urge those spreading such falsehood to cease these actions or face legal consequences.

The Military and other security agencies are a
ctively pursuing these individuals who seek to sow chaos. It is imperative that we all unite to fortify our democracy,” the statement concluded.
