“Military Coups Plague African Nations”

In recent times, several African countries have been gripped by the alarming phenomenon of military coups. These unlawful and forceful seizures of power have disrupted the stability and progress of nations across the continent.

Africa, a land of immense potential and rich cultural heritage, is now grappling with the devastating consequences of these political upheavals. The rise of military coups has cast a dark shadow over the hopes and aspirations of millions of people, hindering their path towards development and prosperity.

The occurrence of military coups in Africa is a matter of grave concern, demanding urgent attention from the international community. These acts of aggression not only undermine democratic principles but also perpetuate a cycle of violence and instability, impeding the growth and well-being of African societies.

It is crucial for the global community to stand united against this menace, offering support and assistance to affected nations. By fostering diplomatic dialogue, promoting democratic values, and providing resources for economic development, we can help African countries break free from the shackles of military coups.

Moreover, it is imperative for African leaders to prioritize good governance, transparency, and accountability within their respective nations. By strengthening institutions, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring the protection of human rights, they can create an environment that discourages the rise of military coups and fosters a culture of peace and progress.

Africa’s potential is immense, and its people deserve a future free from the fear and uncertainty brought about by military coups. Let us join hands, raise our voices, and work tirelessly towards a brighter and more stable Africa, where democracy and prosperity can flourish.

CryptoRom scammers now use ChatGPT to scam iPhone and Android users – Report

0

A cybersecurity company, Sophos, revealed that CryptoRom scammers are improving their techniques by adding AI chat tools such as ChatGPT to their toolkit to defraud iPhone and Android users.

In its latest report, “Sha Zhu Pan Fraud Uses AI Chat Tool to Target iPhone and Android Users,” Sophos said that scammers have also expanded their coercive tactics by telling victims that their encrypted accounts have been hacked and more upfront funds are needed.

According to the report, since May, Sophos X-Ops discovered that fraudsters managed to infiltrate seven new fake cryptocurrency investment applications into the official Apple app and Google Play stores, increasing the odds for victims.

It noted that in 2022, investment fraud caused the largest losses of any fraud reported by the public to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), totaling $3.31 billion in the United States alone.

Scams involving cryptocurrencies, including pig slaughter, accounted for the majority of these scams, increasing by 183% from 2021 to $2.57 billion in reported losses last year.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT as a tool

Speaking on the company’s findings, principal threat researcher at Sophos Sean Gallagher, said:

1. Since OpenAI announced the release of ChatGPT, there has been widespread speculation that cybercriminals may be using the software for their malicious activities. We can now say, at least in the case of pig slaughter hoaxes, that this is, in fact, happening.

2. “One of the main challenges faced by scammers using CryptoRom scams is having persuasive, ongoing conversations of a romantic nature with targets; these conversations are mostly written by ‘keyboarders’, who are primarily based outside of Asia and have a language barrier.

3. Using something like ChatGPT can be a more efficient and effective way to keep those conversations going, making scams less labor intensive and more realistic. It also enables keyboardists to interact with several victims simultaneously.”

He said Sophos X-Ops also uncovered a new scammer tactic designed to extort additional money.

Traditionally, when victims of CryptoRom scams attempt to cash in on their “profits,” fraudsters will tell them they need to pay a 20% tax on their funds before completing any withdrawals.

“However, a recent victim revealed that after paying the “tax” to withdraw money, the fraudsters said the funds had been “hacked” and they would need another 20% deposit before receiving the funds,” he said.

He added that upon further investigation, Sophos X-Ops found seven fake cryptocurrency investment apps in the official Google Play and Apple App stores.

These apps have seemingly benign descriptions in the app stores (BerryX, for example, claims to be reading-related). However, as soon as users open the app, they are met with a fake crypto-trading interface.

“Prior to being able to get their apps into the Apple Store, CryptoRom fraudsters had to use an awkward technical workaround to target iOS users, which could alert their victims that something was amiss. Now, it’s much easier for them to target iPhone users, expanding their victim pool.

“These apps are also easy to recycle and reuse. In fact, the BerryX app appears related to the fake apps we discovered and blocked earlier this year.

While we’ve alerted Google and Apple to these latest apps, it’s likely more will pop up. These fraudsters are ruthless.

“Today, they’re telling victims their accounts have been hacked to extort more money, but in the future, they’re likely to think of new methods of initial and double extortion,” Gallagher said.

According to Sophos, the best defense against pig butchering is awareness of these campaigns.

The company, therefore, advised users who are suspicious or think they may have been a victim to reach out to their security solutions provider.

Femi Olayebi, the visionary behind Lagos Leather Fair, showcases the excellence of African Leather Craftsmanship on the global fashion stage

0

During her first pregnancy, Femi Olayebi extensively explored her hometown of Ibadan in search of a baby bag that met her preferences, but regrettably, she couldn’t locate one.

“I was searching for a combination of style and functionality, but nothing caught my eye. Everything I came across either looked cheap or was too bulky for my liking,” said Olayebi.

She decided to make her bag. The language major with a Master’s in translation was not to know it, but this move would lead to her becoming the proud founder of a contemporary, high-end African fashion label. Olayebi decided to learn how to sew and, bubbling with creativity despite her basic skills, managed to make a stunning and functional baby bag.

“The bag was a hit with my friends, their friends, and my family. Shortly after, requests started pouring in, with people placing orders to get the same bag for themselves or as a gift for new or expecting parents,” said Olayebi.

The overwhelming requests prompted her to start ‘My World of Bags’, a business that swiftly gained popularity among new parents. Her bags were known for their stylish design, high quality, and vibrant colours. As the business grew, Olayebi decided to expand into other areas. She started designing and selling women’s bags and added more products like accessories and merchandise. “Not in my wildest dreams did I think that this singular action would become my future and grow into a business in Nigeria and beyond,” she said.

Being 100% self-taught and without Industry experience, Olayebi soon found herself in a whole new, challenging world. With the internet still in its infancy and Google yet to make an appearance, she had to rely on books to navigate the business world. She even had to hire dressmakers, whom she then trained to become bag designers.

“A turning point for me was being selected in 2008 as a Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women Scholar.” This allowed me to attend an entrepreneurial programme and also attend a business course,” Olayebi said. “After that, I was twice nominated to attend mentoring programmes in the United States, where I job-shadowed some renown American handbag designers,” she added.

Apart from numerous clients in Nigeria, Kenya, Senegal, South Africa, Gambia, Ghana, Namibia, and other African countries, the brand also has customers in Europe, the US, and Canada. Having spent over two decades in the industry and attended numerous exhibitions, Olayebi recognised the challenges and opportunities and resolved to transform the landscape by launching the Lagos Leather Fair in 2017. The fair has become a major showcase for local designers to display their finest leather products. It also features master classes, workshops, conversations, and runway shows, all in one event.

The 2023 edition featured workshops as diverse as the process of shoemaking and how to grow a business through social media.

Emerging brands are offered free space to showcase leather products, which are then evaluated for prizes and mentoring opportunities. The fair also helped boost existing businesses. “I took part in the Masterclass on branding and how it could help us access the international market; this made me look inward to reexamine my strategy in my route to the international market,” said Abimbola Azeh, founder of the Mona Matthews brand.

“It made me put together a new collection. I sat down to think of the major things I wanted to work on this year, including the old styles I wanted to retain and the new ones I wanted to do. The fair gave me something to look forward to,” Azeh said.

Olayebi also holds skill training programmes where the youth are empowered and more young designers are groomed. “There is no point in an industry that does not have the workforce to maintain and grow it; for this industry to be sustainable, it has to have the skill to maintain it and innovation to drive it,” she explained.

Olayebi partnered with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council in 2019 to execute a capacity-building initiative and also persuaded the Mastercard Foundation to partner in the “Kafawa” training programme. She is now making sure that Africa, long a source of some of the world’s finest exported leather, becomes recognised as a major destination for quality leather craftsmanship. “I am determined to make sure the whole leather value chain works and African designers are given their own space in the international leather and leather goods industry,” Olayebi concluded.
