Adegoke’s death: Court sentences Adedoyin, the owner of Hilton Hotel to death by hanging

0

Osun State High Court has found the popular hotel owner, Dr Ramon Adedoyin guilty in the murder case of Timothy Adegoke, a former master’s degree student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, whose death occurred between November 5 and 7, 2021, at Hilton Honours Hotel, Ile-Ife.

The Osun Chief Judge, Adepele Ojo, while delivering her judgement on the case, held that the circumstantial evidence available to the court, pointed to the killing of Adegoke while being a guest at the hotel owned by Adedoyin.

According to her, Adedoyin’s decision not to enter the witness box did not help him, as the circumstantial evidence had shifted the burden of proof on him.

Justice Ojo also said Adedoyin’s decision not to enter the witness box meant he agreed to the murder charge pressed against him by the prosecution, dismissing the alibi pleaded on his behalf by his counsel, who said the hotel owner was in Abuja for many days around the time the death of the late Adegoke occurred.

DSS v EFCC: No rivalry, we are only occupying ‘our’ facility – Afunanya

0

The State Security Service (SSS) says it is the rightful owner of the Ikoyi building where the EFCC Lagos headquarters is located and so can do whatever it wants with it.

The SSS said this in response to a PREMIUM TIMES enquiry on why its officials Tuesday morning blocked EFCC officials from the Ikoyi building.

“It is not correct that the DSS barricaded Efcc from entering its office. No. It is not true,” SSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya wrote in a statement. “The Service is only occupying its own facility where it is carrying out its official and statutory responsibility.”

“By the way, there is no controversy over No 15A Awolowo Road as being insinuated by the Media. Did the efcc tell you it is contesting the ownership of the building? I will be surprised if it is contesting the ownership. Awolowo Road was NSO headquarters. SSS/DSS started from there. It is a common knowledge. It is a historical fact. Check it out.”

“There is no rivalry between the Service and the EFCC over and about anything. Please do not create any imaginary one. They are great partners working for the good of the nation. Dismiss any falsehood of a fight.”

As of 9:45 a.m., dozens of EFCC officials were still stranded in front of the office amidst the confusion caused by the actions of the SSS operatives.

There Shall Be New Nigeria’, Pastor Adeboye Optimistic, Composes New Song

0

General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has expressed optimism toward a new Nigeria in a new song he composed, titled ‘There shall be new Nigeria.’

Pastor Adeboye composed this song with an optimistic feeling toward the new regime.

This song is to be sung by the congregation in the Sunday service on 28th March 2023.

See song below:

*“There shall be a New Nigeria!”*
(Tune: ‘There Shall Be Showers of Blessings’)
(Anchor Scripture: Job 22:28)

1. “There shall be a new Nigeria!”
This decree we all must make.
We’ll see the nation of our dream,
As we commit to prayers.
Chorus:
New Nigeria, new Nigeria I see!
Our story is changing for good,
A great nation shall be born.

2. “There shall be a new Nigeria!”
The good news will spread abroad,
That a great nation has emerged,
If believing we will pray!

3. “There shall be a new Nigeria!”
We all will tell the story,
Of how God destroys our spoilers,
Giving us rest on all sides.

4. “There shall be a new Nigeria!”
The Lord her soul will preserve;
And by the shed-blood of Jesus,
Better things will be spoken.

5. We shall see a new Nigeria,
With righteousness permeating;
God’s fear will rule all our leaders,
Always God’s will shall prevail.”

Osun govt threatens to seal stations hoarding petrol

0

The Osun State Government has on Tuesday threatened to seal off filling stations in the state hoarding petrol.

This was contained in a statement signed by the state’s governor spokesman, Olawale Rasheed.

The removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu during his inaugural speech at Eagle Square on Monday, immediately after he was sworn in.

“Any fuel station found guilty of hoarding fuel to create artificial scarcity shall be sealed off and operators prosecuted for the crime of economic sabotage,” Adeleke said.

It added that the removal of fuel subsidy by Tinubu has caused unnecessary hardship for the people of the state.

This deliberate action is not only inhumane but unpatriotic and will not be allowed by the government. To this end, the Special Monitoring Team on fuel scarcity set up by His Excellency, Governor Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke headed by the Chief of Staff, Hon Kazeem Akinleye is still effective and shall not condone any form of economic sabotage.

“As from today, May 30, 2023, the Committee shall begin special monitoring of all the filling stations across the state in collaboration with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders,” it added.

However, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has supported the decision of Tinubu on the removal of fuel subsidy.

The head of the company, Mele Kyari explained that the company had been spending a significant portion of its profits on the product subsidy.

However, he assured Nigerians that there was no need for panic buying as the company had enough product to supply the country for the next 30 days.

DSS storms EFCC Lagos office, blocks officers’ access

0

Operatives of the Department of State Security have stormed the Lagos office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, preventing officials of the anti-graft agency from gaining access to their office in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Impeccable sources in both agencies told The PUNCH that there has been an ongoing rivalry between the DSS and the EFCC over the ownership of the building.

Our correspondent gathered that the DSS operatives stormed the office around 7:00 am on Tuesday, and refused to leave despite dialogue between operatives of both agencies, an impeccable source confirmed the development to our correspondent in a telephone interview.

An official of the EFCC who spoke with our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said, “There’s been a running battle between us and the DSS over who owns the office because the office was used by them before the EFCC came on board and it was handed over to us.

But it’s been an administrative issue, and the matter is not in court and hasn’t caused any fracas before now. But we don’t understand why they have to block our office and deny our officials access when a new government just came in.”

“The office used to be ours, and we have been fighting over it for years now, and the EFCC knows,” a DSS source said.

Meanwhile, spokespersons for both agencies, Wilson Uwujaren of the EFCC, and Dr Peter Afunaya of the DSS did not respond to inquiries by our correspondent over the development.

Four arrested as Yoruba Nation agitators seize Radio Nigeria, Amuludun FM

0

Some Yoruba Nation agitators, on Sunday morning, seized Radio Nigeria, Amuludun FM 99.1 in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, taking over broadcast for more than one hour.

A source told The PUNCH Metro that the agitators, who besieged the station around 5:40 am in an 18-seater bus, were armed with dangerous weapons and charms, threatening to deal decisively with any staff member who refused to cooperate with them.

However, four out of the agitators, among whom was a woman, were arrested by the police with the assistance of the Nigerian army, while others ran into different directions to evade arrest.

One of the arrested agitators, who sustained gunshot wounds, had rushed into the studio to tell others that security operatives had taken over the nooks and crannies of the station. The blood stain was seen in the studio.

An investigation by our correspondent revealed that after holding some night duty staff and security guards hostage, the agitators hijacked the studio and announced live on radio “Welcome to Yoruba Nation.”

An impeccable source further said they continued threatening staff members to remove all Nigeria flags in the station and replace them with Yoruba Nation flags as they have already taken over the Government Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

It was further learnt that they initially hijacked some commercial vehicles (Micra) to block the main road.

When our correspondent visited the station at J&P Bus-stop, Moniya in Akinyele Local Government Area of the state, more than 20 operational vehicles of security agents, including Department of State Services were sighted at strategic locations to forestall any eventuality.

Confirming the invasion, the most senior staff on duty, Ajayi Omotola, stated that, “They told us that they are Yoruba Nation agitators. And in their T-shirt, there was that inscription there. They wrote Yoruba Nation. Only six persons came inside the studio with different charms threatening to kill us if we failed to cooperate. Others were outside manning security at different areas within the premises.

“They collected all our phones and threatened to kill us if we made any noise or phone calls. They said they wanted to broadcast live that Yoruba Nation has taken over. We should remove all Nigeria flags in our studio and replace it with their own. They didn’t allow anybody to go outside. The Area Commander came, addressed and even pleaded with them but they ignored him. We later heard sporadic shooting outside. So, one of our staff members then came inside to inform us that police and soldiers had arrived,” Omotola stressed.

As of press time, normalcy had returned while stern-looking security operatives were still manning the station.

The PUNCH Metro reports that the radio station was established on October 10, 2007, and commenced transmission in pure and undiluted Yoruba language on October 22, the same year.
