Tinubu warns the security services of disharmony and intelligence hoarding

0

The President, Bola Tinubu, on Monday in Abuja, warned security agencies against disharmony and intelligence hoarding; these practices, he said, frustrate Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts.

“You can’t have disharmony in an orchestra. We must focus on one tunnel…share information, share intelligence. You cannot hoard information. You cannot hoard intelligence,” Tinubu said when he toured the new Office of National Security Adviser and facilities at the National Counter Terrorism Centre, Abuja.

The Director of Information, State House, Abiodun Oladunjoye, disclosed this in a statement he signed on Monday titled ‘At new ONSA building, President Tinubu tasks security, intelligence agencies on sharing into to counter-terrorism.’

The warning comes four days after Tinubu told Service Chiefs at the General Security Appraisal Committee meeting that he would not tolerate them working at “cross purposes.”

The President had also directed them to crush oil theft as it stymies Nigeria’s oil output, even as the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries has agreed to allow Nigeria, Congo, and Angola to continue to produce maximally to their OPEC quota of 2023.

This time, however, Tinubu called for harmonised efforts, saying, “The effort of the entire armed forces of this country must be put together in a way that there will be one single focus on securing the country.

“You can’t have disharmony in an orchestra. We must focus on one tunnel; coordinate, share information, share intelligence, and work harder.

You cannot hoard information. You cannot hoard intelligence. I am glad that Nigeria is on the path to success. We will, I assure you. We will make it a priority and that is why I am here this morning.”

While noting the efforts demonstrated in countering terrorism and the state-of-the-art facilities at the two facilities, President Tinubu highlighted the importance of backing such efforts with knowledge.

He said his administration had recognised that to achieve economic revival, prosperity, and development, security should be of optimum priority.

“Terrorism is not unique to Nigeria alone. It is across the world and we have to fight it. We have to eliminate it. If we as Nigerians are looking for economic revival, prosperity, and development, then we have to give priority to security.

“What I have seen here is a demonstration of intelligence efforts to counter-terrorism. This must be backed by knowledge.

Counter-terrorism that is not backed by knowledge and intelligence is not going to be of any service to any nation. We are going to work on that together,” he said.

President Tinubu, who described the tour of facilities at the new ONSA building as crucial, expressed his willingness to do whatever was necessary to support the nation’s security architecture.

In his remarks, the NSA, Major-General Babagana Monguno (retd.), thanked the President for visiting, his first engagement outside the Villa, saying that “it reinforces his commitment, dedication and inflexible rigidity to ensuring that the security misfortunes of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and by extension, the sub-region are overcome within the shortest possible time.”

Monguno pledged the total commitment and dedication of ONSA to ensure that President Tinubu realises the promises he made to the Nigerian people on security

Resumption of activities at Oyo Bus terminal

0

Barely 24 hours after the inauguration of the new Executive Council members of the Parks Management System in Oyo State, normal activities, on Monday, resumed at the various motor parks in Ibadan, the state capital.

Our correspondent who visited some of the parks within the Ibadan metropolis observed that transporters have moved into the multi-billion naira Bus Terminal at both the Challenge and the Ojoo areas which had been under lock and key after the ousting of the fleeing leader of the disbanded Parks Management System, Mukaila Lamidi, popularly called Auxillary.

Auxiliary was declared wanted by the Oyo State Police Command for allegedly stockpiling arms and ammunition after the PMS was dissolved by the state Governor, Seyi Makinde.

Auxiliary whose house was also raided by the police, was further accused of robbery, kidnapping, and other criminal acts.

Makinde, while announcing the new leadership of the PMS, on Sunday, said the appointment was part of the reorganisation of the system embarked upon by the state government, adding that the new management team comprises members from all the major factions in the transport union.

I never assaulted my wife – Ondo deputy gov

0

The Ondo State Deputy Governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has denied the allegation that he was fond of beating up his wife, Mrs Oluwaseun.

A group, under the auspices of the Society for Women Empowerment, alleged that Aiyedatiwa had physically assaulted his wife twice in four months which, according to it, was against the ethics of his office.

However, the deputy governor in a statement issued through his media aide, Mr Kenneth Odusola, said he had never raised his hand to his wife since they got married.

Aiyedatiwa, who described the women’s group as faceless, said the media report that he engaged in domestic abuse and assault on his wife was baseless and false.

The statement read,” The said allegation of domestic abuse is a figment of the imagination of those behind it and their ungodly intentions to cause a crisis in the state had been known for weeks and therefore such falsehood did not come as a surprise.

While His Excellency reserves the right to privacy on issues pertaining to his family, it is pertinent to state clearly that there has never been any domestic violence between the Deputy Governor and his lovely wife, Mrs. Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa, who at the moment is outside the shores of the country.

“It is not a secret that Mrs. Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa has lived and worked in the United Kingdom for many years before her husband became an elected public official in Nigeria and since then she has been shuttling between the United Kingdom and Nigeria to take care of the home and the children who are also in the United Kingdom.

Therefore, any report of alleged domestic issues within the family should be taken as the handiwork of the enemies of the state who are bent on causing a crisis where there is none and we therefore warn those spreading such falsehood to desist or face the consequences.”

No Going Back On Proposed Nationwide Strike – NLC

0

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has debunked speculations that it might back down on its proposed industrial action slated nationwide for Wednesday.

It said the only reason it would shelve the strike is when the Federal Government and the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited NNPCL did the needful by returning to status quo on the fuel subsidy removal issue.

NLC declared the position in a statement by Benson Upah, Head of Information and Public Affairs on Sunday.

The workers’ body was reacting to a story in a national newspaper on Sunday.

It described the report as laughable and desperate attempt by enemies of the people to polarise Nigeria Labour Congress along ethnic or regional lines on an issue with a national spread.

According to Upah, “this scenario only plays in their imagination as Nigeria Labour Congress continues to be the biggest pan-Nigerian organisation united by a common vision/ mission and shared national values.”

“On the looming strike, we want to assure that all the affiliate unions of the Congress stand together with an unshakeable resolve to prosecute, come Wednesday, except the NNPC and Government do the needful.

“Whereas, primordial sentiments such as religion, region or ethnicity may be refuge for some, at the Nigeria Labour Congress, they have no place. What counts for us are issues such as the mindless and criminal increase in the pump price of pms whose burden will be borne by the already impoverished communities of the poor across Nigeria,” it stated.

NLC said the burden of the malevolent policy would not be borne by other segments of the country to the exclusion of the North or South-West, hence, there is no reason for those regions to back out of the strike.”

Recall that the President, Bola Tinubu had during his inaugural speech declared that the era of subsidy for petroleum products was gone, a development that has had ripple effect on the Nigerian polity since May 29, 2023.

The PDP wants Tinubu to make the assets public

0

The Peoples Democratic Party has called on President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima to take a cue from the late President Umaru Yar’ Adua by publicly declaring their assets as a demonstration of their determination to lead by example.

The PDP stated this through its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba on Sunday.

Ologunagba said it was not enough for the President and the VP to fill asset declaration forms and return same to the Code of Conduct Bureau, just to fulfil the requirements of the law.

Although the PDP is challenging the declaration of Tinubu as winner of the February 25 presidential poll, Ologunagba urged both men to show the world that indeed they are different, by following the path of Yar’ Adua in declaring their financial and material worth before Nigerians publicly.

He said, “They should follow the path of the late President Umaru Yar’ Adua to demonstrate to Nigerians their readiness for transparent and accountable leadership. There are provisions in our laws covering asset declarations by public officers; it is a statutory requirement. Recall that Umaru Yar’Adua, a president elected on the platform of the PDP, declared his assets publicly. Those are the kind of leadership traits expected at that level.”

The PDP spokesman said having filled their assets declaration forms, Tinubu and Shettima should not secretly submit same.

But the spokesman for the dissolved APC Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo, kicked against the agitation for the President to publicly declare his assets.

Keyamo, who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, said, “Public declaration of assets is not a legal requirement. The public deserves to know this. It is just a matter of choice. If anyone thinks it is a moral obligation, he can do it. But that is left to individuals.’’

When asked if Labour Party would want Tinubu to make his declared assets public, the National Chairman of LP, Julius Abure, said, “Let’s give him some time to declare his assets. That’s my opinion. But the law says he should declare his assets. For me, I think he should do it publicly.

“He is already a wealthy man with all his acquisition after serving as a senator and a two-term governor. Are you even sure he will remember all his assets?” he said.

Subsidy: NLC avoids FG meeting, electricity worker’s back strike

0

The Nigeria Labour Congress on Sunday shunned a meeting called by the Federal Government to discuss the subsidy removal and the attendant hike in fuel pump prices across the country.

The union insisted that it would not hold any dialogue with the government representatives unless a legitimate team was set up.

However, the Trade Union Congress officials attended the meeting which was a follow-up to the talks held with the NLC at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, last week, which ended in a deadlock.

This is as the electricity workers vowed to join the strike and plunge the nation into a blackout in protest against the removal of fuel subsidy by the Bola Tinubu administration.

The National Treasurer of the NLC, Hakeem Ambali, confirmed the decision of the union to boycott the meeting which was a follow-up to the Wednesday meeting on the removal of subsidy.

During the meeting attended by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, Managing Director, Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited, Mele Kyari, Dele Alake, and others, the NLC had insisted on the reversal of the fuel pump price pegged at between N488 and N540.

Following the breakdown of talks, the congress resolved at its NEC meeting held on Friday to embark on a nationwide strike.

Speaking to The PUNCH on Sunday, Ambali explained that like the TUC, the NLC was invited for a follow-up meeting at the State House following the earlier meeting which ended in a deadlock.

He hinted that the union did not attend the talks because the government representatives had no official mandate or authority to negotiate for the President.

“It was an adjourned meeting, a follow-up to the last one. However, the NLC insisted that we would be ready to negotiate with a team that has legitimacy and official mandate to negotiate for President Tinubu,” he stated.

Shedding light on the NLC’s boycott of the session, the National President of the congress, Joe Ajaero, contended that the meeting was of no consequence to the congress.

NLC slams FG

Speaking in an interview on Arise television on Sunday, Ajaero said, “Of what use is today’s meeting? As of Tuesday night, I had a meeting with the president of the TUC and some other government officials. I told the NNPCL MD that any move to increase the pump price would be taken as war.

“They went ahead to announce. We told them to return to the status quo so that negotiations will continue but up till now, they have not done that. So what are we going to the meeting to do?

“We are not making any progress and this is because we are still at the same point. The issue of alternatives and subsidies are things we have discussed over time and our position has been made public but the government appears not to be interested in our position.”

Speaking on media reports about factions of the NLC opposed to the strike, Ajaero said, “On Friday, all affiliates of the NLC agreed that we should take the next line of action. We don’t have northern NLC or southern NLC. If any media house has proof, let them bring it forward.”

In a notice issued on Sunday, the National Union of Electricity Employees also threatened to join the strike action.

Already, the NUEE has directed its members to withdraw their services nationwide over the sudden removal of the fuel subsidy by the FG.

The NUEE in a notice signed by its acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, urged its members to comply with the directive and stop work from the early hours of Wednesday.

The union said its decision was a sequel to the directive from the NLC.

“To this effect, all national, state, and chapter executives are requested to start the mobilisation of our members in total compliance with this directive,” the statement said.

It further added, “Please note that withdrawal of Services nationwide commences from 0.00 hours of Wednesday, June 7, 2023.

“You are encouraged to work with the leadership of State Executive Councils of the Congress in your various states with a view to having a successful action.’’

As the Federal Government was scrambling to avert the strike, various state chapters of the NLC on Sunday started mobilising their members for the strike on Wednesday as directed by the leadership of the union.

The Lagos State chapter of the union endorsed the strike declared by the NLC leadership despite pleas by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The NLC Chairman in Lagos State, Funmi Sessi, said the chapter was “in full support of the strike.”

Sessi, who said the NLC was not against subsidy removal, stressed that the congress was concerned about the masses and the effect the abrupt removal of subsidy would have on them.

She stated, “We are part of the NLC NEC’s decision to embark on a nationwide strike from Wednesday. If the Federal Government does not caution the NNPCL to revert to the old pump price, the strike will go on as planned.

“The pump price must be reversed, then the Federal Government should afterward invite the NLC and stakeholders to dialogue over the issue. We are part of this decision in Lagos, and we are in full support of the strike.”

Like his Lagos counterpart, the Chairman of NLC in Nasarawa State, Ayuba Okok, said the workers in the state would participate in the strike action.

Addressing journalists after an emergency meeting of the State Executive Council held in Lafia on Sunday, Oko stated that he had directed all affiliates of the union in the state to mobilise their members preparatory to the strike.

Similarly, the Bayelsa State Council of the NLC said that it had asked the state workers to prepare to join the strike.

The state NLC secretary, John Angese, who stated this in a telephone chat with one of our correspondents on Sunday, said the state council was against the removal of oil subsidy by the Federal Government.

He said, “We (Bayelsa NLC) are participating in the strike; we’ve been given a directive to that effect from the national leadership. Our chairman is returning to Yenagoa from Abuja where he had gone to attend the NEC meeting. As soon as he comes into town, there is the likelihood of us convening a meeting tomorrow Monday to carry out the directive of the national leadership.”

The situation was the same in Delta State where the workers’ leaders are gearing up for the strike.

The NLC Chairman in the state, Goodluck Ofobruku, said, “We’re fully in support of the ultimatum and will join the planned strike and protests. As I speak, mobilisation has started”

On his part, the NLC leader in Cross River State, Gregory Ulayi, expressed his strong support for the impending strike.

The Ondo State chapter of the congress said it was ready to comply with the directive on strike issued last Friday by the NLC headquarters.

The congress Chairman in the state, Mr Victor Amoko, noted, “The NLC executive in the state will be meeting tomorrow (Monday) where we will brief our members on the outcome of the NLC decision in Abuja.

“I want to confirm to you that we are not backing out from the planned nationwide strike unless there is a new directive from the national body of the union”

On the other hand, the TUC in the state said its action would depend on the outcome of the meeting of the national body of the association with the FG.

The state chairman of the TUC, Mr Clement Fatuwase simply said, “Our national body would meet today on the matter and the outcome would determine whether we are going to join the strike or not.”

The Chairman of the TUC in Ekiti State, Sola Adigun, echoed Fatuwase, saying the union members had yet to be mandated to begin a strike over the removal of fuel subsidy.

Adigun said the TUC and its affiliates in the state were only instructed to start preparing their members for actions that will take place based on the Federal Government’s response to organised labour’s demand.

Giving an update on its decision about the proposed action, the Kano State chapter of the NLC said it would decide on Monday (today) whether to join the strike and protest called by the national body of the union.

Kano NLC meets

The state NLC Chairman, Kabiru Inuwa, disclosed that the union would hold a meeting at 3pm on Monday to take a decision on the planned strike and protest and made its position known afterwards

I attended the meeting convened by the national body of our union in Abuja. So, we have also called for a meeting of our local branch which will be held tomorrow (Monday).

“We shall make our position known whether to join the strike or not tomorrow after the meeting which has been fixed for 3 pm,” Inuwa said.

During a two-hour meeting with the Presidency, the TUC, among others, demanded a review of the minimum wage.

Meanwhile, the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria said it was mobilising its members for the nationwide strike.

The union’s National Financial Secretary, Jimoh Musa, made this known in an interview with our correspondent on Sunday.

Musa said, “Of course, we will be mobilizing our members. We were a part of the meeting held two days ago. An injury to one is an injury to all. So, therefore we will be joining the strike.”

Speaking on the planned strike, the Deputy-President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Gabriel Idahosa described it as ill-advised and counter-productive to the long-term merits of fuel subsidy removal.

The statement said the appointment was part of the reorganisation of the PMS embarked upon by the state government
