Real Madrid and Benzema separate

French footballer, Karim Benzema has left Real Madrid.

According to a tweet by journalist, Fabrizio Romano, official statement confirms the player and the club’s decision to part ways after 14 years

The 35-year-old forward agreed a deal to end his glittering era at the club, the Spanish side said on Sunday, AFP reports.

He has also been heavily linked this week with a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia.

Real Madrid and our captain Karim Benzema have agreed to put an end to his brilliant and unforgettable era as a player at our club,” said Los Blancos in a statement.

“Madrid wants to show their gratitude and all their love to someone who is one of our greatest legends.”

The announcement comes after Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti had said Saturday there was “no doubt” about Benzema’s future at Madrid, noting the forward had one more year left on his contract.

And Benzema himself had said “Not everything you read on the internet is reality” after reports emerged in the week about his potential departure to Saudi Arabia, where the French forward joined Madrid in 2009 from Ligue 1 side Lyon.

Benzema established himself as a key player alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale in the vaunted “BBC” attacking trident, before developing into the team’s leader when the Portuguese striker left in 2018.

Benzema has lived 24 trophies with Madrid, including five Champions Leagues, four La Liga titles and three Copas del Rey and is the current holder of the Ballon d’Or for the world’s best player.

He is Real Madrid’s second top scorer of all time, with 353 goals for Madrid, behind only Ronaldo on 450.

Benzema’s final appearance for the club could be later today when Madrid hosts Athletic Bilbao in La Liga at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid confirmed Saturday that Eden Hazard, Marco Asensio and Mariano Diaz are all leaving this summer too, leaving plenty of space for new acquisitions in attack.

Ancelotti avoided talking on Saturday about Madrid’s alleged interest in England and Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

I’m not going to talk about the future of the squad that is in place,” said Ancelotti.
“Kane is a great player, he is a Tottenham player, we have to respect the player and Tottenham.”

NLC writes ASUU, JUSUN, others ahead of nationwide strike

0

The Nigeria Labour Congress has written all its 43 affiliate unions to mobilise for a scheduled industrial action primed to begin on Wednesday, June 7, 2023,

The strike follows the increment in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit. Some of the affiliates of the NLC include – the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria, National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives among others.

In a letter written to the affiliates which was signed by the NLC General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, the Congress said, “We bring you greetings from the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress. You will recall that arising from the National Executive Council meeting held on 2nd June 2023, it was decided that Congress will embark on a nationwide action and withdrawal of services, against the fraudulent increase in the prices of fuel across the thirty-six states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the FCT.

“Please be informed that the nationwide action will commence on Wednesday, 7th June, 2023. To this effect, all National Leadership are expected to mobilise their members for the action and ensure full compliance with the directives as services in both the public and private sector are expected to be fully withdrawn by Wednesday, 7th June, 2023. All Presidents and General Secretaries are expected to help ensure the implementation of the decisions of the National Executive Council,” the NLC remarked.

On Monday, during his inaugural speech at the Eagle Square in Abuja, the President, Bola Tinubu declared that the era of subsidy payment on fuel has ended.

Tinubu had also disclosed that the 2023 budget did not make provision for fuel subsidy as such, further payment is no longer justifiable.

“The fuel subsidy is gone,” Tinubu had declared, adding that his government would instead channel funds into infrastructure and other areas to strengthen the economy.

The presidential pronouncement led to an instant resurgence of fuel queues across the country, with Nigerians lamenting the sharp increase in the price of petrol at the various filling stations.

Although Tinubu’s decision received backing from the NNPCL and the House of Representatives, it has since been resisted by the NLC and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria.

The organised labour has insisted that the President cannot unilaterally take a decision on subsidy removal.

The state police command raided his hideout in Ibadan, the state capital, on Tuesday, where guns and other weapons were recovered while 78 suspected hoodlums were also arrested.

The police said more sophisticated arms and ammunition were recovered at his hideout.

Briefing newsmen at the command’s headquarters, Eleyele, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, said, “The general public, particularly good citizens of the state, is hereby notified that Lamidi Mukaila, aka  Auxiliary, whose photograph appears above, is wanted by the Nigeria Police Force, the state command.”

I can’t marry “Mummy’s Boy” – Angela Eguavoen

0

An actress, Angela Eguavoen, has said she cannot marry a man who is tied to the apron strings of his mother.

In an interview with Saturday Beats, she said, “I cannot marry a mummy’s boy. He has to be a man of himself. Of course, I want a man that has someone in his family that he respects and listens to. He has to be someone who keeps to his words, and cannot be easily swayed.”

Eguavoen added that she would not allow any relatives in her home. “No family member will live with me and my husband unless she (mother-in-law) is sick and is in need of attention. I am a busy woman and not the type that would sit at home to take care of anybody. I am of the opinion that in-laws living permanently with a newly-wed couple is not good,” she said.

Commenting on actresses who complain about fake friendships in the industry, she said, “I don’t know about them. I do not keep many friends. I have just a few of them and they have all been true to me. I believe friendship should not be a one-sided thing. If we (friends) are benefiting from each other, the person won’t think I am using them.

“But, one way or the other, one person will outdo the other at some point. However, that one person is doing better than the other does not mean they cannot do better later.”

Pictorial: FCTA demolishes UTC shopping Complex

0

The Federal Capital Territory Administration demolished the UTC Shopping Complex on Saturday, located at Area 10, in the Garki area of Abuja.

Shopowners said the Joint Task Force of the FCTA stormed the area in the early hours of Saturday, barring them from evacuating valuable items from their shops before the demolition began.

According to them, they hadn’t received any notice of the demolition, although they had been instructed to move to the other complex provided, which, they argued, had not been completed and could not contain the over 480 shops in the now demolished complex.

While the majority say they received no notice of the impending demolition, one John Sunday admits the FCTA had sent a notice earlier in the year but says the shop owners had relaxed since the matter of the ordered move was still being contested in court.

Yes, we were given notice earlier this year that they were coming. But the whole matter is still in court, according to what our leaders in the complex told us. So we just had hopes that it was a fifty-fifty situation; we didn’t think it would happen this way. So perhaps the case had been settled in court without us knowing”.

Another shop owner, Yusuf Adebayo, insisted they were not notified at all, adding that “I’m not aware of that”.

He further said that the new shops provided had not been fitted with amenities such as electricity, despite the fact that about 300 shop owners had already paid about N250,000 each for the shops.

They asked us to relocate to the other side, and that place they are trying to take us to, they have not done anything. No lights, no proper arrangements for people to move in there. People have already paid. They said they should pay. I think they are paying about N250,000 for each shop. And about 300 shop owners have paid already, and nothing has been done properly,”he said.

Meanwhile, a salesgirl, who declined to be named in this report, alleged that security agents who accompanied the demolition team shot tear gas into the air to disperse the protesting shop owners and arrested another man.

“We came here this morning; they blocked everywhere; they did not allow us to enter. So there was even a man who was trying to speak up that they should allow us to carry our things, but they arrested him, and even the person that went to plead for him was arrested.

“They were spraying tear gas, they beat him up as if he were a child. Even me too, I ran there to go and carry some things; they sprayed tear gas inside that place; they wanted to kill people with tear gas, that policeman was even threatening to shoot us”.

Efforts to reach the FCTA Director of Monitoring, Inspection and Evaluation, Attah Ikharo, to comment on the issue have however proved abortive, as he did not respond to phone calls by our correspondent, as of the time of filing this report.

Manchester City vs Manchester United FA Cup: June 3, 2023 3pm – European Football

0

Manchester City vs Manchester United…..

City are desperate to scratch their Champions League itch and lay their hands on a first European Cup but Ruben Dias says it is imperative they put Inter Milan firmly to one side and focus solely on overcoming United.

“We’ve not done anything yet,” the City defender said. “We definitely know what we’re going for and we really want it. But we know if we start to think too far ahead then it will kill us. Our heads are on training. Little by little, we think. Just think and do it.

“Having a bit of tension in these games is what makes you run more, makes you make a bigger effort and reach your best level. It’s good that all of us know how to manage it well.”

Asked which is the bigger game, Dias said: “The next one and the next one is United. Our best chance of beating United is just by being Manchester City. It’ll be a tight game. A final is a final, it’ll always be tight – whatever the odds.

“It’s a special competition for all of us and a special competition for the country. We want to win it very much. We’ll celebrate it if we do [win it] and then we’ll think about what is coming because we are still not finished.”

When is the FA Cup final?
The FA Cup final will take place on Saturday, June 3 2023.

Where is the FA Cup final?
The final is due to be staged at Wembley Stadium in London.

What time does the FA Cup final kick-off?
The FA Cup final is back to its traditional 3pm kick-off for the first time in more than a decade, after police deemed it a “high-risk” fixture.

Although security and logistical advice is understood to be the main factor driving decisions for the first Manchester derby final, an earlier kick-off will also please fans of both clubs who are making the 170-mile journey.

The last 3pm FA Cup final kick-off was in 2011 but concerns have been raised at the higher risk of disorder associated with later start times.

The final is in June rather than the usual mid-May date after club football was pushed back this season to accommodate a winter World Cup.

This means a date clash with the Epsom Derby, which is also being screened by ITV and is now set to start at 1.30, before the FA Cup final.
