Exclusive: Great African Filmmakers

0

The African continent has always been a vibrant source of creative talent, from literature to visual art to filmmaking. For decades, African countries have consistently boasted some of the world’s most pioneering directors, producers and writers. Great movie makers from the area have been and continue to come from all over Africa, ranging from Morocco to Ghana and from Zimbabwe to South Africa. These film makers have made and continue to make impressive contributions to the cinematic world, producing films that are complexly nuanced, thought-provoking and beautiful.

The first great African filmmaker to make an impact was Ousmane Sembene. Born in 1923 in Senegal, Sembene spent much of his career as a self-taught filmmaker. His films were known for their liberal and often radical politics, tackling subjects such as colonialism and post-colonialism in the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa with a boldness and vigor. He was awarded numerous international film awards, including two at Cannes, and he is widely considered to be the father of African cinema.

Djibril Diop Mambety

Since Sembene other filmmakers like Djibril Diop Mambety have made their mark. Mambety was a Senegalese filmmaker and a contemporary of Sembene. His films were also highly political, deconstructing the French occupation of his homeland and exploring the larger themes of racism and colonization. Mambety was awarded the prestigious Cannes award for Best Short Film for his 1995 work “The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun.”

Youssef Chahine

Other celebrated African filmmakers include the Egyptian director Youssef Chahine, who was nominated for an Oscar for his 1997 film The Embrace of the Serpent. Chahine was also awarded a lifetime achievement award at the Cannes Film Festival. Chahine was known for films that were critical of social and political issues, as well as his vision of exposing the cultural values of his home country.

Wanuri Kahiu

In more recent years, a host of film makers have risen to prominence, including Kenyan director Wanuri Kahiu. She is perhaps best known for her science fiction film “Pumzi,” which was selected to be part of the Sundance Film Festival in 2010. Kahiu is an advocate for digital technology and has been involved in the formation of numerous platforms to allow African artist and filmmakers to showcase their works.

Neill Blomkamp

Finally, there are notable directors from South Africa including Neill Blomkamp, whose film “District 9” was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture in 2009. Blomkamp also directed the critically acclaimed “Elysium.” Another famous South African filmmaker is Johnny Walsh, who has directed projects like “Spud” and “Frenzy.”

These are just a few of the numerous talented and gifted film makers from the African continent who are making their presence known on the world stage. From Ousmane Sembene to YoussefGreag

Microsoft founder Bill Gates finds love after two years of divorce.

American billionaire and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has found love again after more than a year of divorce.

The 67-year-old entrepreneur reportedly met Paula Hurd, 60, the wife of former Oracle co-CEO Mark Hurd, who died in 2019. Paula and Gates are known to be big tennis fans and the lovers have been seen at the same tournaments from time to time.

Remember how they performed at the Australian Open in Melbourne and Sydney last month.

A former technical manager, Paula is now a philanthropist, event director and organizer. Gates and Melinda announced their divorce in May 2021 after 34 years of marriage and 27 years of marriage. They married in 1994 and had three children, Jennifer and Phoebe, and a daughter, Lori. The billionaire, who admitted to his “grief” over the divorce, said he was still friends with his ex-wife. “We have a very important, complex and close relationship that we have chosen to work with. And we are so happy to work together. I’m sad too,” he said.

How the Russia-Ukrainian War Made Me a Real Patriot – Ukrainian-Nigerian dancer Max Yezhov.

0

Ukrainian-Nigerian Maxym (Max) Yezhov, a famous dancer and choreographer, has revealed how the long-running Russia-Ukraine war made him what he described as true patriot.

Maxym, in an exclusive interview with Vanguard, noted that with the silver medalist of the “Dancing with the Stars” contest in Ukraine, life changed in a matter of a day.

At first, like many others, Maxym was stunned and found it hard to believe that Ukraine was under Russia’s full-scale invasion.

He stated, “I’ve worked hard for what I had at home, and everything disappeared in one day. Of course, titles and awards remained, but who needs them when there is a war going on.”

Maxym cut ties with his Ukrainian colleagues that stood on the Russian side, while he did everything he could to support Ukraine.  He immediately joined a Charitable Foundation, “Svitly”, and Volunteer Center, “Pechersk,” – the volunteer center of Svitlana Legka.

“Svitly” currently cares for children’s inclusive center, kindergarten, hospice, and military personnel. The fund distributes aid and holds charity concerts and sports competitions.

Maxym has not looked back since then, has continued his volunteering work, and has been involved in many funds and initiatives around the country.

Born in Kharkiv, the second-largest city located in northeast Ukraine, Maxym’s mother is Ukrainian, while his father is from Nigeria, but he was raised mostly by his aunt and grandmother.

Maxym and his father have not been in touch for 23 years, but a couple of years ago, Yezhov went to Nigeria to see his father’s big family.

Today, his father is a big advocate for peace in Ukraine and is trying hard to contribute to stopping Russia’s aggression. Not just because of his son’s well-being but for the sake of spreading the truth about Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in times when Russian propaganda has covered the news.

Maksym’s mother and grandmother lived in Kharkiv when the war began, and Russians heavily bombed the city. Despite Maksym and his sister’s many requests, grandmother refused to leave Kharkiv because it’s the only home she has known for years, keeping memories of her life.

But, after the Russians shelled the city, killed numerous peaceful citizens, and destroyed water, light, and heat supply systems, the sister persuaded the grandmother to leave Kharkiv.

However, the mother, a nurse, has stayed back to help people at the local hospital, where scores of civilians arrive, wounded by the persistent shelling that Russia continues to cynically refer to as the “liberation” of the region. Yezhov’s uncle has been on the frontlines since the beginning of the war, barely escaping death several times.

Like millions of Ukrainians, Yezhov lost his job and projects because of the war. But the silver lining came a couple of months later when he was invited to participate in the “Dancing with the Stars” contest in Georgia together with a top Ukrainian singer Olha Polyakova.

They are the only Ukrainian couple on the TV show, and their performances are all about Ukraine – Ukrainian flags, Ukrainian songs, and national apparel.

Maxym believes this is a way to keep Ukraine on the international agenda. So everyone remembers about the war in his country, and the atrocities and Russian crimes of this war committed against regular people.

How I made Nigeria, my dad more famous – BBNaija’s Kiddwaya

0

Big Brother Nigeria (BBNaija) reality TV show former housemate, Terseer Kiddwaya has bragged about making his dad and Nigeria more famous.

The 26-year-old revealed this in a recent interview with Savvymedia. He claimed that he was responsible for entertainers becoming cool to be Nigerian.

He did, however, added that he is aware of the backlash such a comment would receive.

He said, “Not only have I made my father more famous but I’ve also made Nigeria more famous.

This is the best time to be in the Nigerian entertainment industry and I’m one of the reasons why it’s cool to be us!.

Kiddwaya, however, did not provide more context to support his claims.

“I know some people will cry about the statement I just made,” he said.

“But I’m one of the few people that has had the pleasure of working with such established institutions in the western world, “Such as BBC, Channel 4/5, The Times, The Sun, and of course Hollywood giant Brian Cox, etc.

“And I continue to rep Africa and Nigeria! Carrying the flag of our nation. I also put Benue, my beautiful state, on the map!

I did that when I was on BBN so if you don’t agree with my statement, then you can cry today, cry tomorrow and cry forever. Period!.”

Kiddwaya participated in the 2020 BBNaija Season 5 ‘Lockdown’ edition.

He is the offspring of a Nigerian business billionaire magnate, Terry Waya.

The Valley Agricultural And Foods Company is owned by the reality star and he is also the co-founder of AK Exports.
