Brief Into Kunle Afolayan’s Upcoming Netflix Film “Swallow”

Kunle Afolayan is a household name and poster boy for Nigerian filmmaking excellence.

In 2006 the prolific director announced his intentions with the award-winning “Irapada” and fifteen years later, he presents his newest offering – a film adaptation of Sefi Atta’s “Swallow. Kunle’s filmography is incredible and varied and boasts of titles like “The Figurine“, “Phone Swap“, “October 1“, “The CEO“, “Mokalik” and “Citation“.

We had the pleasure of a quick fireside chat with the filmmaker and he walks through the how what and why of his upcoming Netflix film “Swallow”.

What is the theme for Swallow and how long did you shoot for?

The overarching theme for the movie “Swallow” is drug smuggling and trafficking. We shot for 4 weeks. It was very intense and rewarding.

Without giving away too much, why was it important for you to make Swallow into a film?

I am aware of what the subject matter has done to society and as a director, I do not just tell stories from the entertainment point of view, I always try to make sure there is a balance between reality and fiction.

Swallow was mostly set in Lagos in the mid-80s, what important aspects of Lagos did you feel it was important to immortalize in Swallow?

I love the architectural designs of old Lagos, especially the Portuguese designs. Having to reenact most of the designs with the details of what Lagos was like in that period felt amazing and it brought back memories.

 

What informed the casting choices on Swallow? Did you identify the actors you wanted when reading the script or did you audition everyone?

The only actor I auditioned for was Eniola Akimbo and that’s because I had never seen her act before then. But as for the rest of the actors I had envisioned them playing the role while I read the script and I was looking forward to working with them.

Directing is no easy feat, how did you prepare (physically and mentally) for Swallow?

Directing is something I am used to. “Swallow” is a book adaptation and the very first I am making into a movie. Once I read the book, I had to decide on what aspect of the book I wanted to focus on and whose perspective I wanted to share based on the story because “Swallow” as a book focused on the life of Tolani’s mother and Tolani herself immediately that was sorted every other thing was put in place. Reading the book gives you an idea of what the movie will be like and in a way it helps in another way it could be difficult because if the book is misrepresented or downplayed then it would be terrible. Usually, people prefer the book to the film but I hope the reverse is the case this time.

You co-wrote Swallow with Sefi Attah- How was the process?

It wasn’t a tough process because it was my choice to work with the original writer of the book which is rare in most adaptations. Usually, people don’t work with writers. I gave her a free hand to write what she thought but at some point, I changed a couple of things and infused some other things to give more life to the story.

This is your first out of a multi-title deal for Netflix, what should we be expecting from the others?

The next two are very exciting and completely different styles. We would never compromise on production values, qualities and we would continue to tell Nigerian-African stories in the best way possible.

Share one piece of advice for upcoming directors and filmmakers?

You need to be patient, willing to learn and acquire good leadership abilities.

The Grammy winner arrived at the concert in a spaceship, and he gave fans an unforgettable experience.

The “Kilometer” singer hit the stage, with hundreds of people in attendance to see his electrifying performance. He was later joined on stage by Rema, Omah Lay, Ruger, as seen in the video shared on social media.

The Africa Channel Partners ROK studio films to bring Nollywood to global audience

The Africa Channel (TAC), a Los Angeles-based cable channel, has sealed a licensing and distribution deal with THEMA TV. The Africa Channel focuses on presenting pan-African content to global audiences through its distribution platforms. THEMA TV is the Canal+’s thematic and multicultural content distribution company.

This wide-ranging deal between TAC and THEMA TV will bring ROK studio original feature films to North America and global audiences.

The newly-signed partnership gives TAC access to hundreds of hours of archived and recent ROK Studio’s releases ranging from 2015 to 2020. Popular movies that will premier on the cable channel across North America for the first time include The Secretary, Ovy’s voice, Ninolowo Omobolanle and Mary Njoku’s blockbuster Picture Perfect.

Nollywood is the second largest movie industry in the world per movie produced; it produces more than 50 movies weekly and about 2,500 movies annually. According to the IMF reports, Nollywood generates over US$7 billion for the Nigeria economy and it accounts for 1.4% of GDP. It is also projected to hit US$22 million in cinema revenue this year.

Nollywood has come a long way from the era of foreign titles beating local titles at the box office. In Q1 2021, Funke Akindele’s Omo Ghetto was the highest grossing movie in Nigeria with  ₦442 million ($1.1 million). Comparatively, the highest grossing foreign movie was Hollywood’s Wonder Woman with  ₦41 million ($99,613). These figures indicate Nollywood’s growth and that it’s ready to compete on the global screen.

But distribution is key in entertainment

Content distribution is very crucial in entertainment. It is the process through which content is made available to an audience by distributors. Although distribution is at the final stage of the film business value chain, it is still an important piece of the puzzle. If content distribution fails, the film, however fantastic it is, will flop.

The success of a movie, whether high or low budget, is dependent on its distribution strategy. A close example of how distribution pushes the success of content is in the recent global acceptance of Afrobeat, a unique beat that originated from West Africa. Afrobeat is everywhere like a wildfire – infiltrating the largest of cities and the most remote regions in the world all thanks to the numerous distribution channels that are now available.

Nollywood already has a pool of hundreds of thousands of TV and movie titles that are being consumed on the continent. The partnership between TAC and THEMA TV will broadcast African video content to a global audience.

The Africa Channel has two distribution networks: the TAC TV cable channel and Demand Africa, its subscription video on-demand platform. Demand Africa is also an ever expanding Ad Supported Streaming platform, like Roku but currently for North American and Brazilian audiences.

The Africa Channel and Demand Africa, launched in 2005 and 2017, respectively, are at the forefront of  showcasing Africa’s most outstanding English-language television series, specials,  documentaries, feature films, music, biographies, and cultural and historical content.

TAC will air select curated content from the 370 films that has been licensed through this partnership across North America and the Caribbean, but the majority of the catalog will be made available on Demand Africa, which is for the most part available worldwide on the web, mobile and connected devices.

Winning through partnerships, the African’s playbook

The Africa Channel says it aspires to build bridges between cultures while reinforcing positive narratives of Africa through diverse content and programming and is always on the lookout for producers and content owners that will help them achieve that. TAC’s Vice President of Creative and Production is based in South Africa to be close to the source of African production and talent.

TAC has partnered with local distributors and independent producers like M-Net Studios and Cote Ouest to help push its vision.

“The unique difference with the ThemaTV deal is that this is the first of its kind for The Africa Channel in terms of the volume of Nollywood movies and series that will now be available on our platforms.” Brendan Gabriel, TAC’s VP, Production and Creative Director, told TechCabal.

“We are delighted to partner with Rok Studios to bring North American audiences this expanded  selection of content from Nollywood – the second-largest movie industry in the world‟ Narendra  Reddy, TAC’s Executive Vice President & General Manager, said in a statement. “Canal + and Thema TV‟s  commitment to presenting multicultural content to global audiences aligns with our own, and this is a first  step in building an expanded relationship with one of the preeminent media companies in the world.”

“We are very excited to have teamed up with the Africa Channel and ROK Studios on this content  partnership for the Americas. TAC‟s robust library speaks to the understating of the need for change in the U.S. which will allow us to better respond to the ongoing conversation surrounding content diversity and  multicultural productions,” said Patrick Rivet, CEO Thema America. “At Thema America we believe that  content with a strong cultural identity is crossing boundaries to grab diverse audiences and start  conversations.”

The Africa Channel is estimated to be present in twelve million homes in North America and the Caribbean on cable systems such as Comcast, Charter/Spectrum, and the  Caribbean Cable Cooperative. The company says it has launched a Portuguese language iteration in Brazil, through it Free Ad Supported Streaming platform, Demand Africa TV.

With Netflix officially entering the Nigerian market late last year, the recent surge in local YouTube movie distribution channels, and now the entry of TAC, there is clearly a burgeoning competition in Nollywood movie distribution, which is essential for the growth it needs to compete on the global screen.

Kiddwaya & Cuppy to Star in New black British Reality series “Highlife”

Kiddwaya and Cuppy will star in “Highlife,” a new black British reality series premiering on September 10, 2021.

The reality series, produced by Channel 4, is billed as “the first Black British premium reality series,” and will chronicle the lives of young Nigerian Brits as they strive for success.

Toni Tone, Kamille, Tomi, Chieferdcypha Bussdown KingBernicia Boateng, and Irene Agbontaen will join Kidddwaya and Cuppy in the docu-ality show.

“‘Highlife’ follows the lives and loves of a group of ambitious, glamourous young Nigerian Brits all chasing their own idea of success,” Channel 4 shared in a statement. “Highlighting a community where high family expectations often impact career choices, relationships and even friendship groups, the four-part docu-ality series is an aspirational but utterly relatable authentic portrayal of British life.”

Cuppy confirmed her participation in the reality program on Instagram, writing: “Are you ready for the #HighLife? BRAND NEW @Channel4 Series starts on September 10th.”
