The producer said, “CAKE is a must-see because it sweetly captures the essence of modern-day romance in cosmopolitan cities and the attendant twists and turns. Prosper Edesiri tells the story brilliantly, and cinema halls will be wowed with the good work done by the entire production team. Patience Ozokwor brings needed experience to a film that elevates the art of young Nollywood creatives.”

Rationale

CAKE is one of the planned slates of 12 films to be released through Natives Filmworks and Michelangelo Productions on The Family Friendly Films Project.

The project leverages a focused human capacity development initiative to create a slate of 12 movies that highlight the creativity and skill of a new set of movie directors telling meaningful stories to entertain families.’

Speaking on the project, Mr Gukas said, “It is heartwarming to see the transformation of the directors we have worked with in developing the film slate. Seeing them embrace the process and put it to work is very pleasing. The output is better for it, and it shows. I am very excited and cannot wait for the world to see the amazing films they are making.”

Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan unveiled his latest work “Anikulapo”

1

Kunle Afolayan unveiled his latest work, Anikulapo in January. The production of the star-studded movie pioneered a film village in Oyo State making fans liken the exploits of Kunle Afolayan to America’s Tyler Perry.

The movie is already breaking ground asides from being among three movies originally signed by Netflix to be produced and directed by Kunle Afolayan. The movie will be produced on a 40 acres mass of land with all infrastructures built from the scratch with over 300 men working on-site as Kunle Afolayan revealed recently. When Kunle Afolayan posted a photograph on Instagram in December 2021 on the Kunle Afolayan Production (KAP) Film Village, a fan _akanimo_ reacted, ‘our Tyler Perry’ likening the Nigerian veteran movie producer and director to Perry who acquired a 330 acre of land in Atlanta where he converted to a studio. Perry in February said Black Panther was the first movie to be filmed in the studio. Black Panther went on to be a Marvel Blockbuster with global recognitions and awards. Probably Anikulapo toes the same path as Black Panther.

Afolayan on the new movie said, “The movie dates back to the 17th century and plots around the old Oyo Empire. This entire production isn’t merely bold but signals the birth of a new dawn. Basically, think Hollywood (the location and infrastructure), think KAP Film Village, Studio and Resort because Kunle Afolayan isn’t building for the purpose of this movie alone but for the purpose of constant and repeated use. Indeed, we are witnessing the birth of a new era as we watch the resort blossom before our very eyes. We are witnessing in our days, the appreciation and rebirth of the almost dying Yoruba culture, we are experiencing the rise of hope for the heritage that was once thought to be lost.”

CKay talks Moving to Lagos & Becoming a Viral Music Star

0

Guardian Life Magazine‘s latest exclusive interview delves into the world of Afrobeats global sensation and this edition’s cover star Ckay as he talks about his time in Kaduna, moving to Lagos and becoming a viral music super star.

Read excerpts from the interview by Chisom Njoku below.

On growing up in Kaduna:

I grew up in Kaduna and it was very uninteresting. My parents didn’t let me go out a lot because they were strict Christian parents. My life revolved around home, church, and school. My childhood was very regular and my parents were middle-class earners so it’s not like I had rich parents and I was balling, it was just very average but I had a deep curiosity for music that led me to learn how to play the piano, guitar and eventually producing and that’s kind of how everything started.

On his musical influences:

My dad taught me how to play the piano and read musical notes, but after a few years, I felt like I wanted to start writing my own music not playing Beethoven’s stuff which was in a book I would easily read and okay.

Westlife, Backstreet Boys, Cisco, Usher, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo. I really listened to them a lot growing up so you can say that they influenced my taste in music.

On his struggles in the entertainment industry:

When I moved to Lagos, I had to make money somehow to take care of myself because I wasn’t depending on my parents, so I started producing in studios around to make a living while pursuing my own stuff.

I didn’t have friends, and I was literally just walking up to studios I found online and I would introduce myself as a producer and tell them what I could do for them.

I was working in three studios at the same time, one in Dolphin, Ikoyi; another in Surulere, and the last one around Alfred Riwane in the boys’ quarters of a house there. Then I started working in Chocolate City at some point, making it four. I did all this because I had to survive.

On the process and how far he has come:

It didn’t just magically happen. It is a product of consistency because I watched it [the music] spread from Lagos to the rest of Nigeria, then Ghana and West Africa, to East Africa, then South Africa and eventually the rest of the world.”

On what inspires his music:

“My music is greatly inspired by how I’m feeling at the moment. If I’ve just broken up, that is what you’re going to hear, the vibe of someone that’s dealing with heartbreak; and if I’m in an emotional place, you’re going to hear it in the music.
