Kenyan President William Ruto has toured the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lekki, Lagos, at the invitation of Dangote Group President and CEO Aliko Dangote, ahead of the groundbreaking of the planned Dangote East African Refinery in Lamu, Kenya, scheduled for September 30.
Ruto described the Lagos refinery as a demonstration of what African governments, investors and financial institutions can achieve through collaboration. According to the president, the facility currently has a refining capacity of about 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day and produces more than 100 million litres of petrol, diesel and aviation fuel daily.
The Kenyan president said the upcoming Lamu project would strengthen fuel reliability and energy security, accelerate industrialisation and create an estimated 60,000 jobs. He added that the development is expected to stimulate related industries, including fertiliser, chemicals and packaging production.
The planned refinery represents another major step in Dangote Group’s expansion beyond Nigeria and could significantly increase petroleum refining capacity in East Africa. Earlier reports indicate that the Lamu facility is designed to process approximately 700,000 barrels per day and serve markets beyond Kenya across the wider East African region.
